I thought that when Brian and Justin spoke to one another in S5E13, that there was more to the story.  This is what I thought was said which changed the ending of the show.

Note: This is an archiving of a complete text written in 2006.  It is set in the time period of the short lived series "Vanished".  The story is set in Atlanta.  Justin is a graphic artist working for an ad agency, Brian is the lead actor in a new series called "Vanished" being filmed in Atlanta.

Justin and Brian run into each other after five years of living apart. They are meant to be, so nothing stays in between them and their fate. Justin doesn’t need much convincing to return to Pittsburgh, where they start their life together.

Ted gets off a plane in his home town and greets his new life after failure. Takes place in February 1997.

Brian realizes that Justin doesn't have enough room for him in his new life in L.A. He just needs to figure out how to accept that.

It's that age old Brian and Justin story only with a few twists and turns, dribbles and nutmegs. Brian is our much loved ad exec and Justin is a 17 year old semi-pro soccer player trying to find his way in a world that doesn't always accept his sexuality.

Justin moves to the south of France to live after his partner dies in an explosion at a gas station. His paintings are a success and he’s quite successful after a year.
Someone that fits the description of Brian pays the price in full of €2000 for his ‘Love Lost’ piece, and Justin thinks nothing of it. Then Justin gets a phone call asking for a painting of a ‘Naked Guy’, which he paints Brian onto. After the ‘Naked Guy’ painting is passed onto its owner, Justin gets kidnapped – But by who?
