Author's Response: Yes, she should have known they were different, but to her it would have raised too many questions and doubts about her own decision to never tell Danny. Who knows? Maybe Danny would have stepped up if given the chance and then Michael's life might have been different...
It was easier for her not to think along those lines.

Justin and Jennifer are making some progress. Justin is taking the high road by being forgiving because he deserves the peace he will gain by letting go of the animosity and anger. I am pleased they were able to discuss what is best for the kids. However, call me petty because I'm still having a problem with Jen. She sorry, I get it but if I were in Justin's shoes I would still need more info and to know why. Great chapter.

Author's Response: No, being angry is way harder in the long run than forgiveness and moving on. Forgiving might seem harder in the beginning, but in the end it does have its benefits - if things work out, of course ;)

It's good that Justin is trying to move forward for the happiness of the kids but I hope he will not be the only one. He did not do that unforgivable mistake it was Brian. Jennifer too. This is her son she should have told him a long time ago, he would have taken Brian by surprise as he did 5 years later.Pretty emotional chapter.

I think maybe there is something very wrong with me, because I can never understand how Justin's behavior is for the children's benefit, how it seems other readers react.
For me this is not the way to teach your children how to deal with live, how wrong choices have severe consequences, how to have self respect and to expect respect from others.
Sorry for being harsh, but I've seen the fruits of this kind of sheltering, 'loving' upbringing. Living your live for your children instead of living it with them...

Author's Response: No, there is nothing wrong with you. People just disagree and have different opinions. It's the way life is and it's also what makes life so interesting. How boring would it be if we all agreed on the same things and didn't have any disagreements?
As for me, I am totally not a vindictive person and I don't believe in revenge. For me staying angry at someone is a lot harder than forgiving them. For me it always comes down to: Is my anger worth losing this person for good in my life? And I guess a lot of that went into Justin's character as well...
Maybe something is wrong with me ;)
From personal experience, I can just say that for me it's way more work and way harder to stay angry at people than to forgive them. Yes, forgiving is hard in the beginning and takes work, but in the long run it has always been worth it... But as said before - that's just me and my personal view. Of course it's different for everyone.
As for the children: Justin is just trying to keep them away from pain. Just because they are not being told the truth now, doesn't mean they will never know what happened. We know that Brian told Gus and Luke that he had done something bad. We know that Gus has had questions about Brian's and Jennifer's behaviour. We know that both boys have noticed the tension between Justin and Brian and that Gus has realised how angry Justin has been at Brian and Jennifer... They know that the bad thing Brian did had consequences for him. They know that Justin was angry with Brian and Jennifer because they have done something wrong and bad. Just because they don't know the whole story yet at this point of the story doesn't mean they will never know... And for me Justin's forgiveness is teaching them a way more important lesson: Everyone deserves a second chance! We all mess up, we all make mistakes and we all deserve a second chance to prove ourselves.

Author's Response: Yes, he definitely has, but even more so, Lindsay has hurt Gus. After all Justin kept visiting Gus even after he and Brian ended all contact, until Lindsay told him to not come and see Gus anymore. Poor boy has been through so much already in his young life :(

I have never been a big fan of Michael and Lindsay either and thought they were both spoiled, attention hungry, selfish people. I have never seen that they made "good" friends for Brian and never really liked them on the show either, so it was kind of easy to choose them for the villain roles in this story ;)

Author's Response: Yes, it's one of the things that most bugged me about them on the show - that they hardly ever communicated. We saw Justin try at times, but then Brian's walls would come up and that was it :( For me communication is key and it's one of the main reasons why they didn't work (in this universe!). It's a good thing that Justin finally got his say and that they finally got to talk about what happened years ago... I think they both needed it and maybe it will help them to move forward for their family's sake...

I am loving your story. The little boy could certainly be a young Justin, too. ;)
I really liked how you wrote their first real encounter; about how nervous Justin was over what Luke's reaction would be to him, and how - despite his residual bitterness over not being told - he is slowly being pulled into this family circle.
I continue to resent, though, how no one ever told him what was going on, but I AM glad that Justin is finally getting a chance to get to know his son. I think Justin should have been the one to decide about his career choice and his child, but there is no going back now; only forward.

Also I would like to point out that not only did Brian rob Justin of 5 years he also robbed Luke of 5 years with his papa, stories about his papa are not the same as someone being there to physically love you, put you to bed, be excited with you and grow with you.

Kudos to you for making me so emotional invested in this story. Seriously so good, and I’m really interested in seeing where it goes. Every time I see an update I always say I’m not going to read it until the story’s finished and then I click the link and read it. Just brilliant. I feel it says a lot about an author when you can get your readers to have strong reactions and so invested in the story. Keep up the excellent work!

That is something that will definitely come up over the course of this story as well. Justin is not the only person who was hurt by Brian's and everyone else's betrayal :(

After all this was only their first encounter after Justin has found out about Luke. With Justin spending time with his son, more encounters are sure to follow ;)

What an emotional chapter! I can clearly see Justin's pain here, but also his conflicted feelings toward Brian. First of all, welcome to the club. Wow you don't hold back do you? This story has my emotions all over the place because I want to smack everybody...beginning with Jennifer...in that dysfunctional family who stood by and agreed to allow Justin to suffer for years over what he thought was abandonment by Brian. She betrayed her son! She should not have caved over Brian's threat.
Brian doesn't get a pass for dropkicking Justin off Mt. Kinney for the sake of his art career. I think I would have felt better if he had gone off the grid instead of dragging the gang into agreeing to deceive Justin for his own good.

Haven't written a review for a very long time... but this story provoked me.
My mind understand it takes a good author to evoke a strong emotions like this :)

And don't count out Michael, Lindsay or Mel yet. We haven't seen what they have done. Five years is a long time where a lot of things have happened...
There is absolutely no doubt that Brian and Jennifer behaved wrong and they'll soon come to see that they might have miscalculated how Justin would react and see their reasoning. Lets just say Justin won't be happy with either of them for a long time to come.
Yes, this story has a Happy Ending T**, but happy endings can come in many different ways and forms. We'll have to wait and see how it will play out in this story ;)

I had a hard time writing them like that, that's for sure, but it was where the muse was leading. Lets just say a lot will happen before this story is over, so maybe your views will change along the way. If not, fair enough, I totally understand.
If I were in Justin's shoes, I am not sure if I could ever forgive them, but as nice as your plan of revenge sounds, that's not Justin. He would never do that to his own child. He knows that as Luke's father this is not a path of action he can take.
We'll see how he handles all this instead. The upcoming chapters will be intense and interesting.

I am loving this story, and am speechless at the cruel betrayal by Brian and even more so by Jennifer! How could anyone do that to Justin, let alone the two people he loved the most. I hope Justin takes time to heal and doesnt cave right away to the apologies that should be coming his way from both of them. And all of that hurt for what...so he could become a Famous Artist?? I hope Justin is a better person that I would be as I dont think I could forgive or forget missing five years of my childs life! Candy

I am shocked that not only Brian, but Jennifer kept this from him. Talk about betrayal! Poor Justin. Brian has some big time explaining and groveling to do. Can’t wait to read more.

WOW!!! AMAZING plot. REally looking forward to reading all of this.
I'm STUNNED that Jennifer of all people kept this from Justin! I think that may be harder for him to forgive than even Brian.
Totally floored by the whole thing. The deception!! How involved are some of the others? What was Brian told that he wouldn't tell Justin? What has he told the kids?
Man o man....At least Ted told him where Brian was now living. I think Ted may be Justin's main ally in this.

Ted - well, what can I say? I love the man and he just had to be one of the "better" guys in this one ;) However Justin's main ally in this might turn out to be a big surprise when revealed!

Oh my god a lot of people knew the truth !! I hope Brian has good reason to have his son hidden from Justin and especially convinced Jennifer not to tell him anything. Justin has so much reason to be angry and more. I love this beginning of your story. Thank you

The story was set up perfectly and I have to admit I didnt see that coming! I can only imagine Justins shock finding out that not only did he have a son but he missed five years of his life! I felt for Justin trying to find Brian and his friend worrying about him was good to see which means he had someone who cares. Ted was very brave doing what he did but I pray it helps get our boys back to my.

Wow, so I was right! But you shocked me with Jennifer's complicity. I can't wait to find out why both she and Brian hid this from Justin, unless in some odd way they thought they were helping his career. But they should have known he would want to know about his son! I like how you introduced him to Luke, and how Luke already knew who he was. I'm guessing Brian had shown him his photo or something (?).
