"Fuck" is right. I can't believe I've come to the end and been left with such a cliffhanger. We have all got to know what comes next...how Ray's operation goes and if Justin and Brian survive to be together.
I hope you are writing more chapters as we speak. I, for one, will be checking in on Midnight Whispers to see these chapters!

Dylan...GO AWAY!!!!
Author's Response: :-) That's exactly what Brian is thinking.
Reviewer: Meme (Anonymous) · Date: March 09, 2015 10:13 PM · On: The Part Where Everybody's Nervous
Daphne is on point in what she said about justin rushing to get back with Brian after what he did. If anyone should get punch is that bitch Dylan and Justin should be the one to do it because Brian is to much of a pussy.
Author's Response: Daphne's not all hypnotized and in love...so she can see things a bit more clearly. Dylan is a douche for sure. Being forced to deal with him will ultimately make Brian and Justin happier (separately and together).

Wow! You're evil, how could you leave it at that - now I will be driving myself crazy, trying to imagine what will happen next! I understand and share Justin's hesitancy about the upcoming visit to Babylon. I also wonder how Brian will behave - I hope for the best, but prepare and anticipate the worst – I’m guilty of loving angst madly and passionately :) Can’t wait to see where you’re going with this. And Dylan? That was unexpected. Oh-oh, what the hell is he doing here? I can smell troubles.
Thanks for amazing chapter! I’m dying to see the next one, I think it’s going to be wonderfully angsty!
Author's Response: I really am evil. But going through the wringer (several times) is what earns them their happy ending...

I'm glad that Daphne is going with Justin, cause if Mikey says something she can punch him. I'm sorry to say I don't remember who Dylan is. What chapter do I need to reread?
Author's Response: Don't feel bad. He's barely in the story (reread: Why is your hair in a bun?)

Wow, that was a great chapter! Ray and Brian are so connected, it's obvious. I love that Ray is such a father to him already. His story was wonderful, Brian needed to hear that - he needed support.
Thank you... it was a very touching and sad update.
Author's Response: Awww..I'm really glad you liked it. There's nothing like getting desperately needed support from someone you never expect to offer it. This is definitely a rare bright spot for Brian (family wise).

You can't change the past, but hopefully the future for Brian and his dad will be bright. Now all we need is for Justin to call Brian.

Reviewer: Severus_divides_into_H (Signed) · Date: February 10, 2015 08:56 AM · On: "The Wages of Sin"
Stupid Joan... it as painful. Brian didn't deserve to have a 'family' like that. He's worth so much more. I'm glad it's all in the past, but past doesn't seem to want to let him go...
Author's Response: Brian definitely deserved better, but growing up the way he did makes him particularly deeply loving. He never wanted to let Justin in, but once he had, he would hurt himself to help Justin.

Oh, that was intense. A very long chapter, thank you for that! I loved it. So emotional... poor boys, I hope they will be all right. I like Ray, he's brave... and he's so determined to have a lfie with Brian now.

After the last funny chapter, this was like a bucket of cold water. Brian became so cold so suddebly... the upcoming trip to Babylon makes me worried.Poor Justin, he's trying so hard...
Author's Response: This comment makes me happy. I tried really hard to create the bucket of cold water effect. Justin was similarly stunned and worried.

Ahah, great chapter! The situation with the album was hilarious, I loved seeing Brian little. And how embarrassed grown up Brian was! But those memories are precious, of course Justin is interested in Brian's past - he loves him, after all.
Author's Response: That part was SO much fun to write. Brian deserves to finally get a moment like that...to realize how much someone in his family loved him (and all along)

I need to try that recipe for biscuits. I get that Ray is willing to take a chance and that Clive is scared. If it works, and I sure hope it does, does Clive move to Pitts too? What happens when Ray meets Joan and sees how much she's changed from the Joan he thought he knew? Can't wait to find out what you have planned.
Author's Response: (2 cups flour and 1 cup buttermilk -- I left those amounts out of the chapter)
I'm happy you're excited!
Clive goes where Ray goes. Even if he does so in protest :-)
Yeah...ummm...Joan may need a police escort to keep her safe if Ray goes anywhere near her. Actually, no ... he wouldn't hurt her. But burn her house down when she's at church...maybe...

I love this! It’s so touching that Ray did that much presents for Brian… I still feel hurt for him, though – Brian didn’t deserve to be left, no matter what the circumstances and Ray’s reasoning were. Author's Response: I'm a big fan of Gus+Justin myself :-)
Spending time together with Gus and Molly definitely got them into more of a 'home' frame of mind, but Justin's offered Brian a 'home' (in himself) just by nature (and Brian can't stop himself from accepting it -- unconditional love is something he's always wanted but never really believed possible).

I'm dying to know if you get them talking. Brian and Justin I mean. They've been going in circles in their heads and someone should start talking about what they are thinking. Brian has learned that bullying isn't what he wants to be with his life, I was so proud of him for refusing to hit Ray. As for why Ray didn't go back, I imagine that it was a looong time before he was even able to think, much less actually do something and with Jack still around, it would have meant a death sentance for Ray and possibly Brian. Another chapter denying or confirming my suspicions would be great.
Author's Response: You're right that Jack would have tried again to kill Ray if he didn't stay away.
Yeah, Brian and Justin need to talk. Justin doesn't want to push, and Brian's having difficulty expressing his feelings. It's a hard thing. And at this point, Brian has simply lost chances he'll never get back. Brian's very realistic. Why moon over what can't be changed?

Well Brian took it much better then I or Justin expected. On pain of death. So they go see Ray? What happens next?
Author's Response: Brian doesn't have access to his usual coping mechanisms...he did promise to be faithful. And after the last two months, he's not about to take off on Justin again. Certainly not while the pain is so fresh in his mind.

I have to agree with Flossee in saying Justin ripping off the scab and letting the wound bleed was the very best thing he could have done...well done my friend.
Author's Response: I agree. No way to cushion a blow that big. Best just to get it over with and then deal with the fallout.

That's the way Justin, rip it off like a Band-Aid (adhesive bandage) and let the pieces fall where they may. I am so happy you didn't have him chicken out.
I do hope Justin is correct with his assumptions as some of them don't seem to be substantiated.
"Maybe. But after Jack died ...?" Please hurry back because curiosity is killing me here. Well not literally, but you know what I mean. LOL
Cheers :)
Author's Response: Justin was careful to preface everything by saying "my best guess." But you're right. He's making some leaps. I hate to make you wait for more answers, but they won't come for another couple of chapters...

Loved Justin’s ‘progress’ with not calling Brian for a whole day!:) God, they are so in love, it’s so amazing. Interesting chapter, I didn’t expect this to happen! Justin is learning the information… hmm.
Author's Response: Seems silly for Justin to be worrying about such things, I know, but absence does make the heart grow fonder :-) and it's far too easy for one person to take another for granted...
Justin got lucky with the neighbor...but people are naturally chatty...

I really admire your habit to keep writing no matter what! Really, I would never be able to do that. From your stories it’s always obvious how much you love writing, how much you love your characters, and how talented you are. Thank you for that – for your devotion to B/J, for such creativity, for talent and for ability to work so hard and so fast!
Loved this chapter. Ha, it was so funny how Brian and Michael were ‘talking’! Really, one should admire how persistent Michael is. I’d get very pissed if my friend kept repeating ‘yeah’, ‘no’ and nothing else.
Aw, how I loved it when Justin told Brian about seeing Joe! This instant jealousy, this anger and fear… it’s so Brian, I can’t get enough of it. The rest of the conversation was HOT!
Thanks for another great chapter!
Author's Response: You are WAY too sweet (giving me a serious case of the warm and fuzzies)
I would also find the monosyllabic answers annoying. But ... Mikey's been dealing with Brian's lack of conversational skills for a very long time, so he's kind of used to it.

Ray is gay; hooray, sometimes I get it right. LOL
I must say I can't wait; I hope Justin just tells Brian without there being too many unhappy consequences. Okay, I know I might be living in La-la land saying that, still I have my fingers crossed.

Justin is very lovable but I'm nervous about all his little fibs coming back to bite him in the a...
And what about Joe? I sort of liked him.
Author's Response: Thanks!
Yes, the fibbing might be a source of conflict later.
As for Joe, stop liking him. He's bad. Okay ... not bad, just not accepting of Justin. He wanted Justin to lose weight and actively pressured him into it. Granted, he was trying to help, but in the end, being with Joe would have done Justin more harm than good. Brian, for all his flaws, and he has many, likes Justin's body as is. Now he just has to get over worrying what other people think.

I love how you write Michael - he's very canon. Not anti, but rude and annoying sometimes. I loved the moment where Brian thought it was Justin calling him and felt so dissapointed when he realized it was Mikey. I adore moments like that :)
Oh-oh, I hope Justin won't make a mistake! I stil ldon't quite undersatnd what hisp lan is, so I can't wait to find out! Thank you for amazing chapter, even when they are short, you make them incredible.
Author's Response: I'm glad you're liking the way I write Mikey. Writing him is hard for me.
I've always felt that Justin kind of snuck in (in canon) -- becoming more of a best friend to Brian than Mikey. This is just the beginning.
Justin just wants more information. He doesn't want to tell Brian that Ray didn't die in 1978 only to find out that he did die shortly thereafter. He doesn't want to hurt Brian.

This chapter made me worry, though! My heart is breaking for Justin :(
Author's Response: What a compliment :-) I'm doing a little experimentation with this story...I'm glad it's working out so far.
Relationships should cause worry :-) They're hard. Justin's just accepting this fact and trying to put their dynamic on a better track.

Great chapter, as always, I loved even though there weren’t Brian and Justin interactions. It was fascinating to read about Justin’s history of telling lies – he’s always been a clever lad. Poor Jennifer, she must have had thousands of suggestions and thoughts as to why Justin wouldn’t pick up a girl.
I was amazed by Justin’s grandmother beliefs! That God make us different colors so we knew who to marry. I don’t know if it is your idea or if it’s actually common, I haven’t heard it before! So interesting and amusing to think of it!
Again, I don’t remember – what is Justin’s relationship with his Mom now? Do they talk? Damn, I really can’t wait to re-read this story!
Poor Justin, I know what he feels – how it is to keep getting deeper and deeper into the world of lies… I do think he should end it all and tell Brian the truth. After all, he didn’t commit a crime – these lies are bad, but sort of harmless. Maybe they even helped him and Brian to get closer.
Thanks, great chapter, and great title! Can’t wait for the next one!
Author's Response: Yeah...Jennifer was going out of her mind trying to figure out Justin's "deal."
Actually, I'm embarrassed to say that that was MY grandma's belief. She told me that when I showed interest in a non-white person growing up. I was 8.
Justin has a pretty fabulous relationship with his mom in this story :-)
Justin doesn't want the information he provides about Ray to hurt Brian. So he's bending over backwards to find out as much as he can first...then he'll be prepared ... have a better idea how to help Brian.

How many ways can one lie? I think you caught them all in this chapter. It was funny all the ways Daphne came up with for Justin. Interesting how his mom never noticed how Justin was, the clues were there. Red nail polish, five course meals. lol. Justin need to come clean.

I like this chapter as it seems to be a little more light-hearted, yet you finished with us wondering what Justin will find. I can't wait for your return.

Wow, that was an intense, hot chapter! I loved how jealous Brian got, but how he tried to control himself. I love his interrogation – that indeed shows how much he cares about Justin.
Brian’s last question made my heart ache. I have a feeling he was longing to hear the answer to his last question most of all – he wanted to know, but he was also afraid of it. Afraid that Justin had said Joe he loved him.
By the way, I don’t remember, does Brian know Joe was a fictional character for a long time, that Justin has made him up?
Thank you, incredible chapter! I really love this story, and how caring and loving Justin is. Brian’s been through so much, he desperately needs someone like him in his life.
Thank you!
Author's Response: Yay! I was going for intense and hot :-) This dynamic is typical for this incarnation of Justin and Brian, and I'm trying to preserve that even now that they're dating...lots of jealousy, longing, and things one or both can't say out loud ... but deep, deep love.
You are right. Brian was afraid that he isn't actually special to Justin (and he's been jealous of Joe since day 1). From Justin he learned just how deep one person can love another, and, since then, he's wanted Justin to feel that way for him. He just (initially) didn't want Justin to say it out loud. Because things said out loud can be taken back or otherwise lost. He feared that Justin had said 'the words' to Joe, that what Justin felt for Brian was less (than what he felt for Joe)...and different now (after Dylan and two months apart).
Brian doesn't know Justin made him up. He thinks that it just so happens that Justin ended up falling for Brian while 'pursuing' Joe. He knows that the night Justin saw Joe (outside the diner), Justin wanted to stay with Brian...he knows Justin kept pursuing Joe even after Justin wanted to choose Brian and that he did that, at least in part, as a pretext to make Brian feel comfortable.
It's Justin's turn (in this story) ... to be all supportive. So far, the focus has been mostly on Justin's weight. Justin has been shocked by some of the things Brian's said while f-ed up or sleeping (e.g., irons are for clothes, not people), but until now he's had no way to help Brian. Brian would find it nearly impossible to tell Justin about his childhood (in great detail). But now that Justin can theoretcially talk to Ray, Justin will be able to help/support Brian without asking Brian to relieve *everything*.
And thank you! I love how detailed you are in your feedback :-)

Oh, it’s so sad… :( Ray sounds like a wonderful man. It’s pity something like that happened to him! And it obviously broke Brian for a long time. It’s terrible to lose your loved ones, especially when you have no one else.
Great chapter!
Author's Response: I couldn't agree more. Ray gave Brian hope that beauty/love could exist (it's hard to see that when everyone in your world is cruel). When Brian lost Ray, he felt like the world was cruel and ugly, always. We, especially as children, project our smaller worlds onto the larger one, thinking that what we experience at home must be how it is everywhere. That caused Brian to believe love and trust were foolish, made-up things. Until Gus and Justin.

Interesting chapter! Who is Ray? The moments between Brian and Justin are so passionate, you really know how to write them!
Author's Response: Jack's brother. He was the only one in Brian's family that treated him well and tried to stop Jack from abusing Brian. This story is long, and I had Brian thinking about Ray only here and there (he tries not to because it makes him sad).
Awww...thanks! That's such a wonderful compliment :-)

You know, you story has changed my views a little. For some reason I’ve never thought about the body ideals being different in the past. And besides, what is ideal? Everyone has their own tastes. It is indeed a little discouraging to see anorexic-looking models all the time – they got boring. It’d be interesting and refreshing to see something new, something more realistic. So I actually love Daphne’s idea. But this subject must be approached carefully. Brian can’t just start creating such campaigns whenever he feels like it – or he would lose the job.
When I read Brian’s words, I realized it’s indeed not the best idea… hmm. I’m confused now :) I don’t know with whom I agree more.
Oh, that scene from the past was hurtful. I felt so sad reading it… poor little boy Brian, he had no one to turn to then. Claire is a cunt, Jack is a bastard, Joanie is… worthless. I’m so happy Bran has Justin now, but of course it’s not easy for him to trust and love. And Daphne should have been more perceptive – it was obvious Brian was affected, she should have stopped.
The chapter started out funny, but it ended so sadly, it nearly broke me :( But great ending. I loved it, thank you!
Author's Response: Body image is a hard topic. I actually like Brian's idea (but then, I came up with it). There are women today (like Lena Dunham) who showcase bodies on TV that aren't the 'ideal'--who refuse to meet the ideal and refuse to have ONLY those who do meet the ideal on her show...I think Brian could do something similar. Making people in campaigns 'healthier' doesn't have to mean those people are way overweight. It would be a small step, but one that regular people would be grateful for. As a comparison, think about race and orientation. There it's easier to see how not having a variety of people in the media is harmful. It's been a struggle to get TV/advertising to show women, people of color, and gay/bi/trans people, even though they make up a significant part of the population. For me, that's what it's about when it comes to body image. If you see only people who look very different from you in the media, you start to hate who you are and try to be someone else. That's no good. Here as in canon, Justin is inspiring Brian to think critically about what he puts out into the world.
This story has allowed me to explore Brian's childhood more deeply, which I like. Too often only Justin is shown suffering and struggling, but in this one, they both are. They are both struggling and both helping each other.

Hey Diana :)
"I haven't revealed Ray's orientation yet" I did realize this, I was just saying where my mind had gone. It quite often goes off track. LOL I have forgotten something though. How old is Justin? If you could tell me it would save me going back to check, as 59 chapters is a lot to scan, also I want to read on with some other fics and support as many authors as I can. Thank you in advance for telling me his age. Sorry I forgot.
Brian really surprised me with his interrogation of Justin, still it was a nice way to show he cared. Great chapter, but I see trouble ahead for Justin if Brian ever confronts Joe2.
Cheers :)
Author's Response: I actually like that you assumed Ray was gay. Too often we assume that people are straight unless told otherwise. Justin is 23. Daphne is superfocused in this one...she did her undergraduate degree in 2 years, which is how she's already a doctor. I never said how old Justin was, so don't think it was you. I try to leave out some details to give myself opportunities to shift directions later (hence the reason I never said whether Ray was gay).

Wow, that was so sad. Daphne really annoyed me in this chapter even though she couldn't possibly know about Brian's past. Brian really should have accepted new slices of pizza. Why would he put himself through that when he didn't have to.
"Brian, would you like to say Grace?" Oh, this is so funny. You couldn't image how many guest we have and half of them say a prayer before they eat. We just wait now and see if anyone is going to say anything before we lift our cutlery. LOL One time we also held hands. LOL
Cheers :)
Author's Response: I'm SO glad you noticed that detail about Brian eating the pizza. It wasn't even conscious. He internalized a lot of what Jack said to him ... hence the near crippling insecurity and lack of trust.
That freaks me out, too (prayer especially with hand holding). I don't know why, but I feel like prayer should take place in private or in a church/temple/mosque. I'm happy you found it funny...Brian was beyond shocked :-)

Okay, I miss read the chapter title and worried needlessly throughout the whole read. LOL Bye, bye Joe2. I did actually like him and although he tried to change Justin, Justin must take some responsibility for allowing it. Joe2 did what most people think is helping. Justin needs to learn to love himself.
Cheers :)
Author's Response: I have to agree to disagree. Yes, Justin should have had the self-esteem to tell him to f- off. But people know when they are being a-holes. Yes, he might have been giving him advice a lot of people would give, but he could just have liked Justin as he was and encouraged Justin to do the same.
