Stupid Joan... it as painful. Brian didn't deserve to have a 'family' like that. He's worth so much more. I'm glad it's all in the past, but past doesn't seem to want to let him go...

Brian definitely deserved better, but growing up the way he did makes him particularly deeply loving. He never wanted to let Justin in, but once he had, he would hurt himself to help Justin.
