Amazing job of deciphering why Justin left Brian for Ethan and the emotions involved on both sides. This was very well done. I don't know why this didn' t get more reviews.

Author's Response:

Thank you. A long while back, there was a technical issue with MW and many fics got lost. Moonshadow was still running this site at the time and her son was able to find everyone's stories and we were able to re-post them, but all of the reviews were gone. So there are quite a few older stories on this site with a small amount of reviews, not because people missed reading the fic, but because the reviews were deleted.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this story and review. That really means a lot to me! :)

Hugs,

Snow

"And all I’d be able to create would be empty shells..."

I'm always sleep deprivated by Suinday but Ihave to spend time with the kid and hubby, so I watched TV with him. I read this to prevent myself from going insane (the cartoons kids watch theses days).

Anyway, I was mesmerized by the romantic and heartwarming flow of this story. I hated the way the show ended. This story was a beautiful way of rectifying it.

It made so much sense for Justin to be with Brian to become an an artist. All through the show, Brian was his muse -- his impetus to create the art he did. Why would he separate from it? He was on the right path to begin with.

And I loved the phoenix symbolism.

Perfect as always.

Sandra:)

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs* I'm glad this story was able to save some of your sanity :-) I'm also thrilled that you found this tale heartwarming and perhaps ridiculously romantic. I always hated the way the show ended as well, mainly because I just couldn't believe it would ever happen that way. I refused to believe that all Brian had been through in the five years since he met Justin ultimately didn't change anything about him. Because it changed everything about him, and irreversibly so. The other thing that really bugged me was that it wasn't like Justin was going to the Falkland Islands. He was going to New York for goodness sake - which is what? An hour-long plane ride away, max? It's ridiculous to think that Brian and Justin couldn't have made the effort to see each other on a semi-regular basis - that barely even counts as a 'long distance relationship'. And then there's the issue of why Justin would have gone to New York to start with. If Andy Warhol could make it in Pittsburgh, there's no reason Justin couldn't. It's not like the city is a cultural desert with New York as a shining oasis of opportunity. Nope. I don't but it. I don't buy it at all.

So I had to fix it. And I'm glad you liked the result *hugs* Thanks so much for reading, as always, and for your wonderful review. It means so much :-)

You’re a huge disappointment to everyone in this room, Justin!

Now I remember this story. I wanted to read the second part to Atavism. It has been a while, but it's all coming back to me. This story was so painful to read. I was ready to tear into Lindsay a lot more than Brian did although he did a spectacular job. I was angry that no one defended Justin or said anything to Lindsay. I know Debbie and her family were afraid to upset the apple cart of having another child, but that they allowed it to go on showed how much Lindsay could manipulate them and how much little self respect they had and or respect for Justin. Perhaps Lindsay was right.

Author's Response:

Hey Sandra :-) I can see you were having an interesting time with this story *g* I'm afraid this is another fic in which I'm not very kind to Lindsay but again, it stems from my not understanding how she could possibly have done what she did to Brian and Justin at the end of season 5. As Lindsay describes in a later chapter, she isn't being horrible to Justin here just out of impulse. She's trying to push Brian away so she doesn't regret choosing not to have a second child with him. She still loves Brian, but she and Mel have decided to go with Michael and his 'more stable' life instead. Also, Lindsay and Mel are under a time constraint (although Brian and Justin don't know it yet). Lindsay isn't sure if Brian's only having one testicle will compromise her ability to conceive faster. To avoid having to face these realities, she's pushing Brian away by being horrible to Justin. Self-sacrificing? Perhaps. As for why no one else did or said anything, I expect they were all just shocked...

Thanks so much for your review, as always :-)

Reviewer: no sleep Signed
Date: November 04, 2012 Title: Chapter 2: Mistrust

Okay, I had to stop while I was cooking fried cabbage for dinner (got to get the kid to eat more vegetables). I was disapointed that Justin would go along with that viper. I thought he wanted Brian to father the child anyway. And what about surrogates? Did he feel that that viper was fit to mother another child? All I could feel was this Justin was naivete to nth degree. He had seen what Brian had gone through. AAARGH! It's like watching an accident happening.

Here's my question: What was the motive for this story. What compelled you to write it this way? Just curious. Of course the story itself is excellent, but I often wonder why authors write certain stories, what the motivation was. As you can tell, this story has me in a emotional tailspin.

Hugs,

Sandra:)

Author's Response:

Fried cabbage? Hmm. I can see that working. Sounds like a better deal than boiled cabbage *g*

As for why Justin agreed to do as Lindsay asked, there are a number of reasons. First of all, as horrible as he may have been to him, Lindsay is Gus' mother. Having a child with her meant that his baby and Gus would be related, thus strengthening Justin's bond with Brian. Secondly, Justin knows LIndsay, and has known her for a long time. I can see that being a distinct advantage over having to go through the agonizing process of having to find a surrogate mother, who they couldn't possibly get to know the surrogate as well as they know Lindsay. It's not just Lindsay that Justin is factoring into the equation here - it's the child that Lindsay could produce. Again, Justin knows how well Gus turned out, and Gus is only half Brian, biologically speaking... And finally, adapting or finding a surrogate could take Brian and Justin years and years. To Justin, this could have seemed like a Godsend. He had really wanted to become a father, and here was this opportunity being handed to him on a silver platter. Why would he say 'no'?

I started this story primarily as a sequel to 'Atavism' - I wanted to see how far this life Brian and Justin had rekindled could go. Funnily enough, the story ended up taking a very different track than I had intended at first. I'd initially planned to have Lindsay miscarry, and to have Brian help Justin through that disappointment and sense of loss. But instead, primarily through readers comments, I was inspired to go through with the pregnancy and make Justin a father. Until I wrote this story, I'd never been a fan of the whole 'Justin and Brian with children' genre because I found it centered too often on the children. I wanted to write story that was about them as parents and as partners. I was really glad I did because it revealed some interesting things about both of their characters in the end.

Thanks so much for reading and for your insightful review *hugs*

Okay, I've calmed down. I was the middle of trying to hang Mona Lisa abpove my bed when I heard this (I multitask, a hazzard of my job). I get it now and so did Brian. Apparently, I didn't remember this story as I thought as Justin fooled them all with his ultimatum. You go boy!

I love this story!

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs* Yes, Justin is not as naive as he seems at the beginning of this story. He knows what he wants and how to get it - and more importantly, he knows how to get Brian to want what he wants as well... Thanks again for reading (while multi-tasking!) and for your wonderful comment. *hugs*

“But I want to always remember our part in conceiving this baby, Brian; through passion and love and sincerity.”

My little rays of Sunshine. My little rays of truth.

I'm beginning to see things more clearly now. These children are treated as a blessing and part of Justin's and Brian's family from the moment of pre-conception. I am a little confused about the truth part, though.

Author's Response:

The 'truth' part related to the truth of Brian and Justin's love for one another. That is, they're not doing this - becoming surrogate parents - because they want to help Lindsay and Melanie jump through legal hoops. They're doing it because of the truth of their love. The babies will 'proof' of their love, only without them feeling as if they ever had to go out and prove anything. I'm not sure if that makes any more sense, but I think that was what I was trying to get at. It's been while since I wrote this story - LOL!

Thanks again for reading and for all your wonderful reviews and questions. They all mean a lot :-)

Reviewer: no sleep Signed
Date: November 05, 2012 Title: Chapter 5: Liberty and Light

I was poised on the threshold of a brave new world…and I just couldn’t wait.

I had to recruit my husband to help hang the eight pictures last night. I finished the story but decided I probably was missing the essence of the story. I reread this chapter and to the following ones this morning and saw thing a little clearer. Justin did very much want to be a father and he also wanted Brian to experience it the way he could not have with Gus. He knew how much Brian loved being a father and to saw how hurt he was when he wasn't chosen. I thought is just another way for Linsay to punish Brian and Justin even though it was out of necessaity that she did chose Michael, I still felt she took advantage of the situation to get her digs in. They were also in a stressful situation, and compounded with the fact Brian and Justin were safe and secure together, it probably made things worse for her because she envied his talent and his partner. *whew wordy*

Anyway, I read your reason behind the truth theme, but I had figured that out this morning when I wasn't multitasking.:) It was there love for each other that was both the light and truth in their lives even with all the plotting and turmoil they have had to endure.

Oh, and I love that hammock scene under the stars. Ridicously romantic!

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs* I know this is a pretty 'involved' story - I had to read it over again myself before I remembered all of the little nuances. (MOST of which still make sense - LOL!) I'm so thrilled you liked the hammock scene. I have a really clear memory of writing that, and it's still my favorite scene in the whole story. Ridiculously romantic indeed *g* As for Lindsay, I agree that, at face value, she does seem mean and manipulative but - to give her just a tiny bit of credit in the context of this story - she did have to make a very hard decision  in choosing Michael over Brian. Moreover, she had to push Brian away to make sure he wouldn't discover her plan or try to interfere. Unfortunate that she chose to do so by attacking Justin but, well, this is Lindsay. And you're right - I do think she legitimately envied Justin's talent, and that he wasn't doing what she would do if she was a gifted.

I'm glad the reasons behind the 'truth' idea came through. It was kind important for the story because one of the twins' middle name was 'Verity', for that truth.

Thanks so much for reading, as always, and for your wonderful and insightful review. I really appreciate it so much *hugs*

Reviewer: no sleep Signed
Date: November 05, 2012 Title: Chapter 9: Epilogue

This was beautiful! Justin and Brian both had utopia although I know Brian would have wanted Gus in the mix. Jusitn had come full circle form Atavism. He not only had the love of his life as his husband, he had his career in the art world and  his children to raise and full time. Now here's my question:

I was shocked when I read this the first time. Why would Lindsay give up full custody or allow them to raise the the twins full time. Is it because she saw too much of Justin in the girls and did not feel a connection? Or were they too much to handle with two other children; or where the children superfluous for her since she still had the trump card -- Gus? Just curious.

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs* I'm so glad you liked the (possibly hopelessly romantic) was this story ended. I know that, ultimately, it would have been ideal for Brian and Justin to have Gus as well as the twins, but this was my teeny dose of reality for the story. Gus is Lindsay and Melanie's child - Brian signed those papers turning his parental rights over to Mel. He and Justin would have no legal grounds at all to try and claim partial custody. The twins, on the other hand, were legally Justin's kids. In fact, as he and Brian got married they would legally be Brian's children as well. That's not to say that Brian would have abandoned Gus, or that he wouldn't have ideally preferred an alternative arrangement - far from it. But I think he appreciated that, at age six, it would be disruptive for Gus to keep moving countries every six months. As for why Lindsay gave full custody of the twins over to Brian and Justin, I deliberately left that part of the story somewhat vague. Again - it's not like she would turn her kids over to Brian and Justin and never see them again. It just means that Brian and Justin would have the same rights over the twins as she has over Gus and JR. I guess they could have all agreed that that would have been 'fair'. They all knew from their experience with Jenny Rebecca that fighting over a child's custody ultimately works for no one - especially not the child in question. But yeah - I left it vague so that people could draw their own conclusions. The details didn't seem particularly important to the story's plot in the end.

Thanks again for reading and for your wonderful comments and questions. They really get me to think *g* Thank you for leaving such wonderful reviews :-)

 I wanted a weed...

I love the analogy. I had to get away from the anorexic stories for a while and decided to explore this Justin cancer fic. I must have read this some time ago and don't know if I reviewed it at that time. I was such a lurker, initially, LOL.

I have just finished reading Between the Crosses again and found myself looking for Lionheart in this fic. This is a different Justin born of different circumstances. I find it interesting that you started this fic at the point of after Justin has left Ethan. It makes Brian's involvement all the more special. Justin's anxiety is twofold because of his guilt over leaving Brian and then having cancer. Angst galore.

Author's Response:

Hey Sandra :-) Once again, my profuse apologies for not getting to your wonderful comments this week. I promise, promise, promise I will - they all mean so much to me :-) It's just that I'm having a bit of a struggle wrangling my work and... well, pretty much any other aspect of my life into the same space together. *sigh* In any case, thank you so much for your wonderful comment on this story. I wrote it over five years ago now - it was the very first multi-chaptered story I ever wrote. At that point, I was hugely into protective!Brian and a Justin-with-cancer theme seemed to be an ideal platform upon which to explore this. If I wrote it again, I would make Justin a stronger character and Brian a little less open in his affection, but I think perhaps I got the dynamic right for a first pass ;-) You're right in that this is a very different Justin than the one in 'Between the Crosses'. That Justin had a much harsher past and a heavier load to bear... but this Justin's load is not exactly a feather weight either. As you say, he's having to deal with the duel burdens of anxiety over Ethan and guilt over leaving Brian... Isn't angst fun? *g*

Thanks again for your wonderful comment, and my apologies again for being so sluggish in getting back to them. I can only promise you that I will, for sure :-) *hugs*

Summary:

The premise of this tale is that Craig and Jennifer are actually the Crown Prince Cray and Crown Princess Jen of Tay Island, that was destroyed by war.
Cray/Craig makes a deal with the devil for a return to his kingdom and his crown: in exchange for his first born son.

Years later, the devil is ready to collect what's his.

The story takes place between season 2 and three. There is no specific timeline except that Justin is no longer with Brian, however still with
Ethan. There are some bad guys in this story, but Ethan isn't one of them. In fact, Ethan is a good guy here. And for those of you who cringe at the thought of Justin with Ethan, don't worry, they don't last too long together.

“Brian was slowly beginning to piece together all the puzzle pieces that he’d been accumulating over the past two months. Although he didn’t understand the illness itself, he was beginning to understand what made it tick.”

There seems to be so many factors affecting Justin that I can’t keep up. Loneliness triggered his condition, but now I’m reading self-hatred and a need to please his friends and family. Maybe because I’m so busy right now that I’m absorbing everything, but I want to make sure I understand as much as Brian. Is it depression that is causing the anorexia?

Author's Response:

Hey Sandra :-) Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this comment - it's been a little crazy lately! In answer to your question, is more the other way around - the depression is a result of the anorexia. An eating disorder can be very isolating and stress-inducing, which in turn can lead to depression. Because the disorder is sometimes perceived by the victim as being 'self-inflicted', this can lead to self-doubt, and hatred of the idea that you're doing something to yourself that you have absolutely no power to stop. The sheer power of the eating disorder's obsessive-compulsive tendencies makes the victim feel as if they are 'in control' emotionally, even as they know logically are completely out of control. It it a horrible place to be, trust me. It's no wonder that anorexia and depression nearly always go hand-in-hand.

‘Broken wings,’ he thought, ‘but unbroken soul.’

The tough love of Brian was a beautiful thing to behold.

I was surprised that Justin wanted his mother called. I knew that he needed Brian.

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs* Yes, there is an awful lot of tough love in the story...

Incidentally, Justin didn't want Jennifer called. Brian called her because he knew he couldn't handle Justin in the state he was in by himself. I don't think Justin would have told Jennifer by himself — he tried so hard to keep it from Brian, and I image he would have tried doubly hard to keep it from his mother...

Thanks so much for reading and for your wonderful comment. *hugs*

"It made Brian’s heart ache."

I listened to this as a was packing so I had to go back to make sure I hadn't missed anything. The program seemed so severe. Close watch? I then realized that it was a life and death situation. It might as well have been a suicide watch.

It was heartwrenching to see how much it affected Brian and Jennifer and beautiful to see how support they provided.

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra! I think it's so cool that you're listening to this like an audiobook ;-) The ED recovery program is pretty harsh, but I suppose the people who developed it would tell you it has to be. By the time a person needs to be hospitalized for an ED, it is a life and death situation - that's who serious and unrelenting the obsessions are. It's also a sad but true fact that most deaths that are related to EDs are suicides. That's how crippling they can be, and it is a very, very difficult cycle to break. That said, in my opinion, loving support of the kind that Brian and Jennifer are giving Justin is the only real anecdote...

"But he didn’t have a fucking choice. He hated not having the choice to control his own life."

I really woke up from a much needed nap so I'm still behind in getting my reviews done but I am determined.

I can see Justin or anyone geting to a breaking point in the treatment. It does seem as if he was forced to eat or else anf treated like a petulant child who wounldn't eat there vegetables. I don't see how anyone could get through such a treatment without a good support system.

I can see Justin worried about cum calories. That was funny.

Oh, your new userpics ARE AESOME! You always had gorgeous ones but you know I love the Lark series.

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra :-) I'm sorry it's taking me so long to get back to these - after the holidays, I'm really behind in replying to all my comments *sigh* As far as the treatment goes... well, I'm on the fence about whether or not this is really the best way to treat anorexia. I certainly have some reservations and even some bitterness about it myself. But this is the way the illness is treated for very serious cases, and it does require an awful lot of self-will and a lot of support. The part about the cum was meant to be a bit humorous, but it is also kind of sad that Justin was so far gone that little tiny things like this continued to haunt him. There was no escaping his obsession, not even with Brian...

I love my userpics for The Lark as well *g* Did you see the banner as well? I'm just thrilled with it ;-)

"He sometimes forgot that this was Brian’s war as much as it was his own.'

It was only five weeks? It seems like it would have taken longer for the treatment. Maybe Justin did so well because he wasn't fighting only for himself.

I loved Emmett and those socks more than the story he told.

“You’re beautiful, you know that?”

That was such a heartfelt moment. Loved it.

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra :-)

The treatment does take longer than five weeks - it takes years and years. When a person is admitted to hospital for anorexia, they can only treat the most immediate and life-threatening symptoms like starvation. The initial weight gain can happen surprisingly fast once the person starts eating again, but it's the dangerous, obsessive thoughts and the resistance to the treatment that can take years to recover from. The test of time is always the hardest.

I'm really glad you liked Emmett in this chapter - I just loved him after I'd finished writing it. I can see Emmett being profoundly affected by Trudy's tragic story.

So glad you enjoyed this chapter - thanks so much for reading, as always, and for your wonderful and insightful comments :-)

This was intense.Their love making could not have been like the first time.

I trying to convey my thoughts here but my virus is making me a little woozy, so bear with me, LOL.

"Love was the most powerful weapon and the most protective shield."

Maybe if Justin had never left Brian behind for New York the anorexia never would have happened? Brian was such an integral part of him.

Hmm, I always thougth Brian did love Justin that very first night, hence the juggling and hand stands. But you also pointed out that "This time, Brian believed in love."

Loved this chapter!

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you loved this chapter, and that you found the love making was intense and meaningful. So *not* like the first time... I think you're right in that Justin may never have developed the illness had he never left New York. It is true that most people who have or have had anorexia are predisposed to it, by virtue of their past, their genetics or the personalities. Bit it typically needs a trigger. Justin's trigger would have been leaving Brian - any big, life change can be a significant trigger. It's interesting what you say about Brian's handstands and juggling being a sign that he loved Justin. I've never thought of it that way before - I always just assumed his antics were because he was high. Huh. Interesting idea...

Thanks so much for reading, as always, and for all your insightful comments. *hugs*

"...his gaze focused on a small sparrow..."

I understand that there is no true cure for anorexia -- that it is a battle that will go on for the rest of one's life. And if that is truly the case, I can understand Jennifer's reluctance in allowing Justin to leave for Europe, but like Brian pointed out, he wouldn't be happy. And itsn't the crux of the matter in the first place?

Now, I have racked my little brain, but I cannot figure out the significance of the sparrows.

Author's Response:

LOL! The sparrow is just me being elusively poetic ;-) The sparrow is just basically Brian suddenly realizing the complexities of life, and how huge and detailed it can all seem somehow - even when looking at something as unassuming as a little bird. As for Jennifer and Justin... it is true that there is no 'cure' for an eating disorders, but people do recover from them. They just learn to deal with and confront the obsessions, until they no longer hold any power over them. What I do know for a fact is that a person has to *want* to get better - there is no way in hell recovery will happen otherwise. And I think that a big part of wanting to get better is being happy and stable - that's why Brian wants Justin to go to New York...

Thanks again for reading, as always, and for all your lovely comments :-)

I just…I don’t want to have to choose between them. That’s what tore me apart when I left here last year. I just had no control over what I wanted, and that’s when the anorexia started. I wanted you and I wanted my art, but I couldn’t have both.”

I would be lying to say I fully understand anorexia just I don't fully understand overeating and I'm not sure if the two are related in any way. I have witnessed and taken care of both in my profession but only treating the physical aspects of them. I remember movie of the week and afternoon specials when I was younger about anorexia, but nothing really stands out to me. Ilso remember people whispering around me and smetimes asking me point blank if I had an eating disorder. I was only 88lbs when I married my husband. I remember my gynecologist telling me I was underwieight. I remember how I would work out more if I felt my thighs were too large, even at that weight. I had a body image problem. It was never an eating disorder. I can't begin to understand what anyone with that disorder goes through.

I will read your anoxia stories on both Brian and Justin again. I'm determined to understand more. I'm just stubborn like that, LOL.

Author's Response:

LOL! I'm glad you are stubborn about that ;-) It really is a very complicated disorder - each case is as unique as the person who has it. Although poor body image or low self-esteem can be the trigger for an eating disorder, is it (as far as I understand at least) seldom even the cause. The confusion and the misconceptions come when people only see the symptoms (i.e. weight loss etc.) and assume there is nothing more than that. As far as I'm concerned, eating (whether it is not eating or over eating) is only the most obvious symptom of a driving, obsessional need to control. It's not a consequence  that many victims of eating disorders are high-achievers and perfectionists who avoid failure at all costs. The irrational but compelling idea is that failure can be avoided through control. Does that makes sense? Like I said, it can be complicated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this story a second time through. I'm so glad you saw things this time that you hadn't seen before. And thank you again for all of your wonderful and insightful comments. They all mean so much *hugs*

“I know you’re right about beautiful people,” he whispered. “You're so attractive, Brian…but what everyone sees is just the smallest, tiniest reflection of how beautiful you are inside.”

You did a wonderful description of the emotions of the aftermath from both Justin's and Brian.

Beautiful! EXCELLENT STORY!!!

Author's Response:

I'm thrilled that you liked this story, and that you thought the description of the emotion was accurate. I always liked to think that, although Brian was promiscuous,  he always had a good handle on what was safe and what was not. We know Justin didn't from the incident at Sap's party. It was one of the many things Brian taught him along the way. Thanks again for reading, and for all your wonderful comment. Your thoughts really mean a lot to me :-)

For that instant of eternity, there was no sound, no sensation, no movement. And then-

Justin

His heart seized; contracting within his chest, a hard, merciless weight crushing it painfully, fear threatening to squeeze out the elixir that kept it beating.

This started with a strong intensity that did not abate until Brian held Justin in his arms. The episode it referenced did not evoke the same tension and fear I had while reading this short fic. Initially, I wasn’t sure what incident was occurring. I was caught up in the moment of Brian’s emotional turmoil. When I realized it was the bombing, his ongoing prayers and pleas were all the things I could have imagined him thinking during that time. They had wasted so much time with pettiness (Brian). Justin had lived through the bashing; it was their second chance but Brian was too afraid to take it and continued to push Justin away at every turn.

I thought that episode was wasted on focusing on Michael’s injuries. Terrible, I know, but I could have cared less. Brian had just said those three little momentous words and they were overshadowed, as usual, with Michael drama. For a short while, I thought Brian was going to profess his love for Michael too.  After reading this story, I decided to look at the episode again, but this time I can look at it with a whole new perspective and perhaps enjoy it for what it’s worth.

Time stopped again as the sheer, staggering, gut-wrenching relief broke over Brian so powerfully it took all his strength just to cling onto the edges of reality.

He had his arms wrapped tightly all the way around the warm, solid, living Justin, crushing him hard against his chest, against his heart.

The hourglass wobbled, tilted, and finally fell silently onto its side. And slowly, ever so slowly, it began to right itself again the other way up. Resetting the clock.

I could quote every line because each one was just as poignant and beautiful as the previous. I can’t pick a favorite.

Thanks Sapphire,

Hugs,

Sandra:)

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs back* Once again I am so thrilled by your wonderful review - I'm so glad you liked this! I remember this episode so vividly (as I'm sure everyone does). Because I only started watching the show in 2007, I was watching it on DVD. I had to keep stopping it to give myself time to process what was happening, and then I remember going for a long, long walk afterwards to 'recover'. For me, the highlight of the episode was not the "I love you", not was it Michael nearly dying. It was Brian's terror when he went back into Babylon to find Justin, and his utterly relief when he finally found him. I would have LOVED for that little scene to have gone on for just a little bit longer before Emmett came to find them - there was SO much more that could have been done and said with that moment when they found each other. It's a testament to Gale Harold's acting ability that he looked utterly terrified when he arrived at Babylon, and that Brian's fear was palpable. I could watch that scene over and over again and it would never lose its impact - it is a very powerful, poignant scene. And hence, this story :-)

Having re-read this story myself (I wrote it almost five years ago now), I think I might go back and watch that scene again, too. Season 5 was never my favorite, but it does have it's moments ;-) Thanks again for reading and for your amazing review. I appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts and comments so much. *hugs*

I usually stay away from eating disoder stories otherwise I would have read this long ago. I was looking for a complete story to read for jury duty and decided to give this a try. I should have known. This first chapter was reviting and mesmerizing. I won't get much sleep tonight because I must finish this.

Author's Response:

LOL ;-) I'm glad you're hooked!

I'm quite interested to hear that you stay away from stories about eating disorders - in the QaF fandom, there aren't that many stories out there that deal with them. (In fact, to my knowledge, I've written about 75% of the ones that do). Some people have told me that they don't read them because it hits too close to home for them, which I totally understand. I try and make mine as brutally honest and accurate as possible (based on my own personal experience incidentally), which I guess gets a little too angsty for some. Anyway, I'm rambling. Suffice to say, I'm so glad that you're reading this now and I'm glad you find the story captivating!

Thanks so much for reading and for yor wonderful review :-)

Reviewer: no sleep Signed
Date: September 27, 2012 Title: Chapter 3: Trust

I sat in that cold Criminal Court building across from the Cook County jail so totally immersed in this story that I forgot to be afraid of where I was. And then I felt a little guilt for doing so. Nevertheless, I found myself reading some pages over again savoring the story as it unfolded.

If the doctor had been sixty and balding, and the walls of his office tiled with a superfluity of psychology degrees, Brian would've found it easier to feel contempt for the man.

Etienne smiled slightly, indicating that he was not only unfazed by Brian’s tetchiness…

Leave to Brian to be bias with aesthetics. You did a wonderful introduction of this character. He seemed real from the very first sentence and perfect for what Brian needed.

It was also a subconscious acknowledgment of an enormous sacrifice.

That seemed to be Brian’s MO. He seemed to always think he had to sacrifice to make his friends happy.

There was only really one thing I knew I could count on for certain, and I ended up staking my life on it.”

I found this most intriguing, your juxtaposition that had Brian depending on Justin always coming back to him no matter what and how he selfishly needed that. That he felt the only way Justin would stay or return was because of need. That he wasn’t worth Justin staying with him otherwise. I loved this. I had never read anything like this before.

…the reason we broke off the engagement- was my realization that I couldn’t live with someone who gave up his life and called it ‘love’, just to be with me.”

“Who suggested that- going to New York?”

In his mind, the complicated pieces of Brian’s puzzle were all falling into place.

It was complicated, and Etienne was sure he’d only seen the tip of the iceberg.

This Etienne was brilliant. He was able to see things from an outsider point of view which shed light on an issue or discrepancy Brian could not see. I felt the same way about Lindsay after watching that last episode. She didn’t give any consideration to Brian’s feelings about losing his son and or the man he proposed to marry.

I don’t usually read about eating disorders because most of the stories (other fandom) I have read have been more about the disease and less about the characters.   Your story does an excellent job of being about a person with the disorder, not the other way around.  I also guess I have my own bias because food was too much of a valued commodity in my youth to think about depriving myself or anyone else. As I read more about it not being about the food but about control it becomes more interesting.

Another thing, I have read ravings and had done so myself about some of the old authors that no longer write for the fandom, but there are writers such as yourself who deserve just as much if not more praise. I should have heard of this story before now. Thank goodness it’s a feature story this month. I would have missed one of the best written stories out there, bar none.

God, I love this story!

Author's Response:

Thank you for this wonderful comment! It's not all that often that I get to hear such insight from a reader and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it :-) I'm glad this story gave you something to read and to think about during your jury duty.

I'm so thrilled that you liked this chapter in particular. Thinking it through and then the act of writing it gave me a lot of insight into Brian's character. I love writing Brian above all other characters because he's so complex, with so mnay layers. Even in canon, it was only when monumental things happen to him - like when Justin was bashed or when he got cancer - that we got to see a tiny bit of his interior, vulnerable side. And even then, we didn't really get to see enough of it. In Brian's need to always be in control (or 'on top'), he had to make many personal sacrifices. It's interesting because outwardly he holds onto the 'selfish bastard' persona, while on the inside he's quite to opposite. Through Etienne, I find I was able to draw these things about of Brian's character and make them meaningful in the context of the story. I'm so glad that you found them interesting and believable too.

As for Lindsay, I know I'm not very nice to her in this story (and have been occasionally criticized for it). But I really do think that she was a catalyst for Brian and Justin not marrying and for Justin going off to New York. I could never figure out why she would have done that. She was supposed to have loved Brian. In struggling with this question for this story, I came up with a theory of my own, which comes out later in the story. But yeah - I was never really a huge Lindsay fan...

As for eating disorders fic, this is actually my second one. I've written another one where Justin has anorexia called "A Moment on the Lips". I started writing them because, in part, I was frustrated about the myths and misconceptions that surround eating disorders. I wanted to try and inform people in the best way I could with the most impact factor - in fanfiction. Eating disorders are not a 'fad' or a disease you can catch, but a serious mental illness just like schizophrenia or being biploar. They can happen to anyone, from any race, gender, age, ethnic or cultural background. And 95% of the time, they are not about food - they are basically powerful OCDs that involve eating and exercise. They can be absolutely devastating to both the victim and the victim's loved ones, and it can take decades to recover. And they kill - anorexia nervosa has a 10% mortality rate. But I digress. In writing my two eating disorder fics, I really did want to do exactly as you said - illustrate and educate about the human side and the human struggle, and the long, long road to recovery.

As for what you said about the 'old authors' - that is praise indeed! I started writing fanfiction in 2007, so I missed the 'glory days' of the QaF fandom. I have often been so frustrated by the fact that, no matter how good, original, unique, or well-written a story by a 'new writer' is, they can never seemingly compare with "The Greats". It seems that some people are not willing to branch out and embrace the new and creative stories which are being written all the time. That's why I think the Monthly Feature here is such a good idea. It's too bad more sites don't do it. I'm always so thrilled when people find my stories, and I'm sure all the other new authors feel would feel the same.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave your wonderful and insightful review. I really enjoyed reading it and I'm so grateful for your thoughts and feedback :-)

This is my last review before I pass out from exhaustion. Please forgive typos, spelling, and grammarical errors, LOL.

Before he realized what he was doing, Justin had crossed the room in four strides...

There is something magical in the way you write the two of them when they are together. This was achingly beautiful. Justin's guilt was overwhelming his need to be there for Brian. He seemed to have forgotten that it wasn't all about him at the moment. But it was heartbreaking that Brian's pain was his pain.

Author's Response:

I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this review - you thoughts and comments mean a lot to me :-)

I'm glad that you really picked up on what I was trying to illustrate with this chapter. Brian's orthorexia doesn't effect just him - it effects everyone who is closest to him as well. Justin's guilt, in my opinion, is fully justified. He feels some ownership over the fact that Brian was 'allowed' to fall so far without anyone coming to his rescue. But at the same time, Brian is still trying to hold onto the protectiveness he feels for Justin, trying to protect him from getting hurt. All in all, it is a very difficult and confusing time for both of them, and it's not something that is going to be fixed over night, or be settled with a hug and a kiss. *g* I love angst, don't you ;-)

Thanks so much for reading, once again, and for your wonderful review. I appreciate it so much :-)

Etienne had the idea that Brian possessed strong personal morals that were manifest in cryptic ways only Justin could decipher. He wondered what Justin would tell him about Brian, and about what Brian had not told him about Justin.

I would love a sequel with more of Etienne involved. He was such a personable and interesting character. I could see the similarities between him and Brian had there been different circumstances.

On what had once been plain while plaster was now painted a magnificent mosaic of violets, maroons, lavenders, and mauves.

I wondered why Justin painted the house. It also seemed as if Brian was proud of Justin and wanted to show him off.

...he saw a word tattooed in black ink onto the inside of Brian’s middle finger.

What was the word and what was the meaning of it?

Author's Response:

Yay! More of your wonderful comments :-) I was so hoping I would hear from you again *g*

I'm so thrilled that you like Etienne. He was really the first substantial original character I'd written into a fanfiction and I was amazed how well he fleshed himself out. I guess he's partially based on a mosaic of people I know, but he's also my interoperation of a really good psychologist - someone who is intelligent and intuitive, and who knows which directions to go in without being intrusive. I've toyed with the idea of writing a sequel for a while now - I'm so glad to hear that you'd be interested in it if I did ;-)

As for the painting of Britin on the cast, I think Justin was trying to bring Brian back to the hope that they'd once had - and, significantly, could have again - for the fututre. In this story anyway, Brian has always been very proud of Justin. he knew he is incredibly talented, which was one of the reasons he agreed to 'let' Justin got to New York. I guess it's kind of natural that he;d want to show him off a little *g*

The tattoo I was referring to was the 'RESIST' tattoo Brian (and I guess Gale Harold) had on the inside of his middle finger. You only really see it really well once, in the sex scene in episode 205 (or 204... I'd have to go back and check). Anyway, in this story, I figured that Brian had gotten the tattoo as a symbol of his 'no apologies, no regrets, fuck 'em all' mentality. The idea that the world couldn't change who he was, and that he would resist anyone that did.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and your comments :-) I appreciate it so much!

The jagged pieces of his fractured heart were amalgamating again in their millions, crushing their way inwards with such intensity that it drove the air from his lungs.

Here I saw Justin trying to do for Brian what Brian had done for him after the bashing.

“I sometimes wished more than anything that I could be normal. Mediocre.

I was surprised at that statement. I thought it sounded conceited but was he referring to having to keep up an image?

We let Lindsay talk us out of it! We listened to her instead of to each other! And look what happened!”

I wanted to cheer at that revelation.

The woman seemed to have an unhealthy obsession with Brian...

It seemed that Justin suspected Lindsay was not as she appeared but he knew he could not voice his fears to Brian. Brian did seem to have rose colored glasses when it come to Lindsay as well as Mikey. He seemed very dependent on Lindsay with a need that was almost unnatural. And I always wondered why she chose Brian to father her child when her partner was dead set against him.

Brian was very protective of his family of friends which was understandable coming from the family he had been born with. But I often wonder if he could have chosen better or set bounderies.

I loved Brian's dream at the ending of the chapter. He finally had hope.

Love would be his guide.

Beautiful!

Author's Response:

Thanks again for these wonderful comments!

Before I started writing this, I had always been a huge fan of protective!Brian - which was good, as most of the hurt/comfort stories out their feature a protective Brian. But it was really interesting to see what happened when the tables turned, and when it was Justin who was the strong, protective one. It's true that Justin was 12 years younger than Brian and - at first - very much more naive and innocent. But that doesn't mean he wasn't a strong person. One of the things I love about this story in retrospect was that it gave me a much better appreciation for Justin. It made me really realize what had really taken from Brian helping him through his post-bashing trauma.

"I was surprised at that statement. I thought it sounded conceited but was he referring to having to keep up an image?"

You're right - I was referring to the fact that Brian felt he sometimes got tired of having to be Mr. Perfect all the time. Brian is very much a control freak and a perfectionist - you can tell that he doesn't do things if he can't do them perfectly every time. I'm kind of like this myself, and I know it can be totally exhausting. Its like being on treadmill that has no reduce speed control.

As for Lindsay, I had to paint her with a very dark brush for the purposes of this story's plot. But that said, she was never my favorite character. She seemed manipulative in a passive-aggressive way (both the Brian and Melanie), which always kind of got to me. There were also times that I wondered if Justin actually really liked her that much. But one thing is for certain - she had Brian wrapped around her little finger, especially as she was Gus' mother. I guess I think that Brian loved Lindsay so much because he had fathered a child with her. And maybe, maybe, that was what Lindsay secretly banked on. But that's just the way I see it...

Thanks again for reading and for sharing your insight. It's really very interesting to hear your thoughts and feedback, and I truly appreciate it :-)

Temptation wrapped her powerful, slender body gently around Brian’s...

The monkey experiment was scary enough as it and the snake dream...

That Brian had nightmares about Lindsay should have been a wake up call and think even before Etienne spelled things out for him, he would have sought answers eventually, just not as soon as he did.

“If I did something unexpected and maybe a little stupid that needs to be done for us...

I was so mad at Brian. Justin needed resolution for this too. Brian still had too strong of a desire to protect Justin or was it for Lindsay's protection too?

I finished reading this story the day at the court house, but I still had so much to think about. I could not not review. Loved the imagery in this chapter!

Author's Response:

Im so glad you liked the imagery in this chapter :-) I've always been really interested in dreams and their bizarre, 'unreal' depictions of what id going on in the dreamer's subconscious. Brian's dream here was certainly significant and it said something powerful about how he was actually feeling about the whole Lindsay situation.

"Brian still had too strong of a desire to protect Justin or was it for Lindsay's protection too?"

That's an interesting point. I think it's actually a little bit of both - Brian wanting to protect Justin from his own pain and anxiety, but also him wanting to protect Lindsay. At the heart of the issue, Brian is afraid that Justin will try and stop him from doing what he needs to do in order to achieve closure on what's troubling him. That is, he's afraid that Justin would stop him from seeing Lindsay, or prevent him from saying what he needs to say. Again, Brian is still very controlling. He wants to find resolution by himself.

I'm really glad you did take the time to think the story over, and I'm so grateful to you for taking the time to come back and share your insight with me. It gives me a lot to think about, too :-)

It was one thing Brian had always secretly admired about Emmett.

You summed up Brian's relationship with Emmett brilliantly in this chapter. Emmett always seemed as confident as Brian when it came to his sexuality and never apologized for who or what he was. It did seem that Brian was a little jeaous of Emmett at times. Emmett made the perfect person to take with him under the circumstances because Emmett woud be fair to both he and Lindsay if anyone overstepped their boundaries and he could trust him.

Loved the truck stop scene!

Author's Response:

Thanks :-) This was one of my favorite chapters to write in retrospect, particularly because of the dynamics between Emmett and Brian. It was actually a friend who made the interesting observation that Emmett is the only one of Brain's friends who didn't either worship him or was afraid of him. Emmett was always quintessentially Emmett in the same way that Brian was Brian. And you're right - like Brian, he also had that 'no apologies, no regrets' attitude, which takes a lot of balls. One of my favorite scenes in canon is in season three when Ted takes off with the Crystal Queens and Brian, on the dance floor at Babylon, tells Emmett to forget about him. I just found there is something so powerful about that scene that just speaks volumes about their friendship. It was in light of this that I chose Emmett to go with Brian. I thought he;d be the only one who could protect Brian without getting too emotionally involved.

Glad you liked the truck stop scene. Some things about Brian never change ;-)

Thanks again for your wonderful review and for sharing your insight. It is so much appreciated.

I would hate for anything to come between us… But I also think what she did to you was unforgivable.

You go, Emmett! I loved that Emmett was in tuned with his emotions and feelings.

“You think I’d just stand by and let her take you down?”

Emmett was also just as brave as Brian. They do make a good couple.

Lindsay just does something to me…

Now here I was queasy.  I remember reading Nightvision55’s “The Great Divide”.  It was one of the first anti-Lindsay stories I’ve read and loved it, but it touched on something. Lindsay theorized Brian’s love for Justin was just transference of his love for her because of their similarities. Could that be it? Too many times it was alluded to in the series that Lindsay would be the woman he would have had a relationship with if he was straight (or was it that first scene with her and Gus).

He had just confessed to her what he couldn’t bear to even confess to himself and she had brushed it off as a whim. An attention-seeking maneuver, a game.

Lindsay wreaked havoc in Brian’s life and just traipsed along with her life without any consideration for Brian, secure and happy that she had separated him from Justin just so she could continue her fantasy. She was so self-centered that she ignored the physical trauma Brian’s body had gone through with starvation. I could understand Emmett’s shock over Brian forgiving her so readily and hugging the viper.

I trusted you then and I really thought you cared about Justin. You made me believe that he really wanted to go to New York, even though you knew he didn’t. By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late. Justin was gone, and…”

And that was also the crux of the matter. She hurt Justin too. She also separated Gus from his father and to make Brian give up his parental rights was cruel and unconscionable.

It was a lie. He knew it would be years before he would find the grace to forgive her entirely. But still, he needed the truth and this was the only way he knew how to get it.

It seemed to me that Brian did forgive her. I think he was still in denial and there is the matter of Gus.

Author's Response:

I'm glad that we seem to be on the same page as far as Lindsay is concerned - at least in the context of this story. Although I was never a real Lindsay fan during the whole series (she always seemed a bit two-dimensional to me), it wasn't until season five that I really began to dislike her. To this day, I still can't figure out how she thought it was all right to encourage Justin to leave Brian AND to take Gus away from him at the same time. The only explanation I can think of was that she was so clueless she didn't think of the implications or - and this is obviously my option - she had an agenda. It's really interesting what Nightvison55 suggested about Lindsay seeing Brian's love for Justin as displaced love for her. I've always thought the Lindsay never really embraced being gay the same way Brian did. In fact, after her affair with Sam, I'm inclined to think she was actually bisexual, which would explain her continued obsession with Brian. She needed Melanie to fulfill some of her needs, but Brian to fulfill others. I guess that would have been fine had she not been so manipulative in getting what she wanted, or not recognizing the consequences when she did.

In the context of this story, Emmett and Justin see and understand Lindsay's motives, which is why they are both angry. Brain, on the other hand, has an additional diminution to think about: Gus. The reason he forgave Lindsay is because he loves her though Gus. Gus is the one thing they share on such an intimate level that I don't think Brian can see past that. And, as you've suggested, Lindsay knows and uses that as leverage. But I think she still does love Brian in her own warped kind of way. He was really her first love.

Thanks again for reading and for sharing your insight! It's all very interesting :-)

“Then why the fuck did you leave him?”

That’s why Brian could not have taken Justin. An angry Justin is nothing to sneer at.

“It’s tragic. If Lindsay let Brian see Gus half as often as he asks to, it wouldn’t seem quite so much like Gus was getting a visit from a long-lost uncle. Brian is his father for Christ’s sake, and yet the amount he gets to see his own son depends entirely on a mother who would rather see him starve to death than ruin her happy little hetero fantasy!”

It seems to be another way of controlling Brian. Gus was her trump card, because of him she could practically get away with murder. Whether he wanted to or not, if he wanted to see Gus, she would always remain in his life.

“I want to know why Brian still loves Lindsay. I want to know why he forgave her. Not so that I can forgive her myself, but just so that I understand.”

That was the biggest question I had after reading this chapter. You must be planning a sequel. :)

As it had always done love held them together. And now there was a promise to bind them together. And soon there would be strength and hope to keep them together.

Beautiful. I wonder what Lindsay would say to that.

Author's Response:

Thanks again for your wonderful comments and feedback :-)

Even without an eating disorder to contend with, I think 'the Gus issue' would have been painful for Brian regardless. On some level, it might be partially his fault, as he almost took it for granted that Gus would always be close to him. That is, he didn't seem to realize how much being a parent and being active in his son's life meant until he was faced with the possibility of losing Gus. I think that Justin even realized it before he did, which was why he tried to get Brian to not give Lindsay and Mel his 'blessing' to go to Canada. The whole thing about Lindsay and Melanie moving to Canada left a sour taste in my mouth, to be honest. If they really cared about what Brian and Michael thought, and if they truly valued their place as their childrens'' fathers (or JR's grandmother, for that matter), they would have stayed and tried to work it out. The fact that they immediately upped stumps and left suggests that they had their own agendas. But that aside, you're right. Gus was always a trump card for Lindsay. She knew from the day Gus was born that Brian loved him and, by extension, loved her just a little bit more. It's one of those little manipulative things I didn't like about Lindsay's character.

"That was the biggest question I had after reading this chapter. You must be planning a sequel. :)"

I have been thinking about it ;-) We'll see. Brian certainly still has a long way to go in his recovery and there are many loose ends left at the end of this story...

Thanks again for reading and for all your wonderful reviews. I have really enjoyed reading and responding to them. I like that they really make me think!

You didn’t think I was not going to review the absolute best chapter of the story did you? :)

Show-and-tell? That was definitely out of character for Brian.

The subject of the abandoned wedding was obviously still weighing heavily on Brian’s mind, and Etienne made a mental note to bring it up later.

“An old English poem called ‘ The Seven Crows’

That inscription on the ring and the poem that it symbolized was beautiful. Brian’s true romantic side had come to light again. You were very clever in using the poem to emphasize the two of them and their journey. I’m curious as to how you came to that and if you had this poem in mind from the beginning. Also, it seemed that Brian had changed. He was willing to show his softer side or maybe he needed someone to be more supportive of his willingness to change and of his marriage?

It was a shame that Brian still felt guilty about the aborted wedding. He was still suffering the ramifications of Lindsay’s actions.

“If Justin permanently takes my name, people will know this isn’t a joke or a passing whim.”

Etienne was shocked despite himself.

Here it seemed that Etienne had become more of a friend than physician. He had become incensed that Brian’s friends would be so callous with his feelings about his marriage to Justin. Brian needed a strong support system and his friends were failing him. I loved that line about “the fuckability warranty” expiring, though, LOL.

They were right – I was a fucking hypocritical bastard

That’s true, but they could have joked all they wanted to and then have been sincere and empathetic enough to wish him well.

It was so liberating to just be.”

That said so much about how much Brian had been suffering and how much he needed Justin.

That talk Etienne had with Brian about his prognosis was very poignant. I was shocked because I thought Brian was cured or well on his way to be. I had no idea the illness was a lifelong process of recovery or that is stayed like a dormant virus that could attack at will or when a person is vulnerable. It was heartbreaking and I thought Brian was going to break under that revelation. It was the brilliance of Etienne character to use the analogy of the dog rolling over to explain the significance of Brian relying on Justin. I loved this line:

“Trust Justin, Brian. Trust him with your vulnerability and he’ll trust in your strengths.

I’m happy you didn’t end the story with the last chapter because this one tied everything together nicely. I loved that you ended it similarly to the way you began, only this time things were on a positive note.

A story that would turn a crow – their seventh crow - into a dove.

BEAUTIFUL!!!

After reading this chapter again, I feel that a sequence would be nice, because I would love to see more of Etienne, but this ended perfectly. Now, some other thoughts:

You mentioned in one of the reviews that Brian was Lindsay’s first love. I had never contemplated that. I thought it was more of a Justin/Daphne experimental thing in college, that neither one felt anything more than deep friendship for each other. And although Lindsay did have sex with another man later, Brian never experimented again. I always thought it was applied that Lindsay was Bi, especially, after that affair with Sam.

I had to really review what I remembered of Brian’s character as it pertained to Lindsay. He seemed to know that Lindsay had certain feelings for him, just like Michael, and reveled in them. He kept flirting with them to keep them adoring and wanting him, much like he did the gay population of Liberty Avenue. It was if his sexuality was the only thing he had to offer. It was no wonder Lindsay held on to those dreams much like Michael,  who always thought they would end up together as old queens in Florida. This does not excuse Lindsay’s behavior, but I can see a bigger picture now. There is so much of Brian that could feel a psychiatrist or psychologist shelf.

Let me know what you think.

Subject change -- back to this story:

This was by far the best chapter of this story. I tried not to write a novel when I was reviewing but I sometimes get a little involved with a subject or a storyt and don’t know when to stop, LOL. I hope I didn’t drive you crazy. I’m looking forward to my favorite series – the Lark Series. In the meantime, I’m doing a Sapphire marathon in between projects I’m working on and laundry.

Take care and thanks again for a wonderful journey,

Sandra:)

Author's Response:

Wow! Thanks so much for this amazing comment, Sandra! a86; I had to give it a day to sit down a digest it (*g*).

I’m so thrilled that this was your favorite chapter. I’m never totally sure how many people who read this chapter see it as distilling the essence of Brian in this story, which was kind of what I had intended. You’re right in that this Brian does seem like a gentler, more sensitive Brian than we’re used to in canon. However, it’s really because of what he’s been through with the eating disorder and with Lindsay. He’s still a little bit fragile, and he’s still not really sure what path his recovery is going to take. I think he’s also recently realized how much he truly values Justin’s love, and how much it meant to him before Justin left for New York. He had to learn the hard way that Justin was such an integral part of his happiness and existence, but that lesson learnt, he’s willing to embrace and cherish what he knows now to be the most important parts of his life.

I’m really glad you liked the ‘Seven Crows’ poem and the symbolism there. The poem itself is one that I liked when I was a kid. The version I grew up with was obviously a little bit different from the one that Brian and Justin chose for their rings, but I always really liked the ‘seven for a story that’s never been told’ idea. It was actually the unusual symbology of a crow – in some cultures seen as a creature imparting cunning and wisdom – was another reason I used this poem. Weddings are usually all about flowers (golden gardenias!) and love birds and ‘delicate’ things. Having a crow as a symbol just seemed more right for Brian and Justin. Plus, I just really like crows – they’re super smart as far as birds go :-)

I always see Etienne as being very professional in his relationship with his clients, but I’m sure he would have felt some kind of emotion on the inside. It’s clear that he doesn’t like Lindsay, although he was always careful never to impart that information to let Brian. But you’re right.  I think Etienne does like Brian and he does feel for him. I think he might even admire him. The two men do have some things in common: they’re both in early middle age, they’re both fathers, and I think they have some of the same personality traits.

I know some people don’t like the realities of Brian’s prognosis at the end of the story. I knew from the moment I started this story that it wouldn’t end with Brian ‘getting better’ because, as I mentioned before, I wanted this story to be a realistic portrayal of orthorexia. That’s another myth I wanted to tackle – eating disorders don’t stop after the victim gains weight or stops restricting. Those steps in recovery only treat the symptoms, they don’t treat the cause. Even in the most ideal situations, recovery takes years, and for many people it’s a lifelong struggle. I know many readers would hate saying this but, because of Brian’s innate controlling and perfectionist tendencies, I can see his recovery taking up to a decade.  That doesn’t mean he couldn’t be totally happy and live a normal life, but those obsessive tendencies would always be at the back of his mind. And that’s why he needs Justin for support, to help find healthy ways of dealing with them and to make sure they never ‘take over’ again.

As for Lindsay, writing this gave me a whole lot of insight into Brian’s relationship with her. It is such an odd relationship when you think about it. I would say that the two of them probably were ‘sweethearts’, but more in an emotional sense. Brian obviously knew he was gay in college, but I think he made an exception for Lindsay. Maybe that was why she was so important to him – she was an exception. Michael was kind of an exception, too – I’ve often thought that he was an odd choice for Brian’s best friend. He was kind of dorky and isn’t the kind of ‘cool’ person you might expect Brian to hang out with. But Brian loved him, and I don’t think it was just because they were gay. Was Michael was an ‘exception’ to Brian’s rule, too?

The whole issue of Gus is interesting, too. As you pointed out in an earlier comment, Melanie hated Brian. Lindsay must have had to fight tooth and nail with Melanie to get her to agree. But Lindsay would have no other. Was afraid of losing Brian as they grew out of the ‘Peter Pan and Wendy’ stage of their life? Maybe. I agree that it’s interesting!

You haven’t driven me nuts with your comments at all! In fact, I’m really glad you feel like you could keep going on and on *g* I don’t often get to have such in-depth discussions with people and it’s such a thrill to meet someone who is so interesting in discussion it :-) So thank you so much! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

I obviously would dearly love it if more people talked to me, but I respect that some people just don't feel comfortable with it. I guess it makes me value feedback like yours all the more. *hugs*

I'm so behind in reviewing and I feel guilty about it because you writers take the time and trouble to provide endless entertainment for people like me -- for free.

I was just discussing certain popular books with my husband and I mentioned how little a buy them these days due to such amazing stories in fanfiction. I wonder if you have published anything.

Okay, back on topic. I want to thank you for indulging me in answering my loquacious reviews and I do have a few comments and questions more in response:

I think he’s also recently realized how much he truly values Justin’s love, and how much it meant to him before Justin left for New York.

I often thought about the post 513 Brian. Did he stay the same romantic deeply in love man that Justin left that night or did he go back to being the Stud of Liberty Ave. I believe the former, yet people argue that was never Brian. I say the true Brian was the one we saw at the prom. So I'm gld you pointed that out.

As far as the 'Seven Crows' poem. I grew up reading 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' almost religiously. I still read them from time to time. I willl have to revisit that one.

Now the issue of Michael and Lindsay being thr exceptions -- I may go with Lindsay because that is a valid point that Brian did know he was gay. It seemed as though he was willing to change for her. That was momentous when you think about it.

As far as Michael -- Brian looked upon him as the little brother he never had, plus Brian was a chemistry geek. He could relate somewhat on the geek level although it was said that Michael was not as intelligent or did as well in school. I do believe Brian would have slept with Michael had he pushed the issue. I also believe he did not pursue other men on a romantic level because or for Michael's benefit. Was he in love with Michael -- no.

I still believe Brian needed Lindsay and Michael to stay in love with him. He was an atention whore becuse he was so deprived of it (love) growing up. I still think he thought his sexual attraction was all he could offer. In all his bravado, I still saw an insecure little boy who just wanted to be loved.

I go by the moniker sandraj60 on LJ. I do forget that have more than one alias. Yes, I was first one I think to review  your story on TQL. Of course, I didn't know it at the time.

Side note: It drives me crazy that youy can't edit once you hit that submit button. Please overlook errors. My typing  and spelling is for... well you get the picture, LOL.

Author's Response:

I thought you might be SandraJ60 *g*, although I didn’t want to guess in case I was wrong. I usually recognize a reviewing style, but I’m sorry I didn’t pick up on it this time – maybe just because it was out of context. I didn’t know you were here on MW too, but I’m glad you are ;-) I agree that there is a lot of really great fanfiction out there and I’m thrilled that it’s finally getting a little bit of ‘official’ recognition as a legitimate genre of fiction. What I love about writing and publishing fanfic online is the reader interaction. I’m happy to offer it for free as long as I always get credit as the author and as long as people give me feedback from time-to-time.

As for the end of 513, I didn’t believe for a second that Brian would go back to being the Stud of Liberty Avenue after Justin left. No way. His relationship with Justin and everything they went through changed him permanently. Besides that, I don’t believe The Stud of Liberty Ave was Brian’s default – it was one of his more impressive acts and it served him well. But it’s not who he actually was. Plus, New York and Pittsburgh aren’t that far away, for crying out loud! It’s not like Justin went to study art in the Falkland Islands or something. There is absolutely no reason why their relationship couldn’t have work. I’m not being ridiculously romantic here – it just seems way, way more likely that this would be the eventual outcome.

But back to the story: I forgot the address what you said about Brian needing Lindsay and Michael to love him. Yes, absolutely. In this story, Brian admitted to Etienne that he needed Justin to ‘need’ him as an assurance that he (Justin) would always come back. In the case of Lindsay and Michael, I think he needed them to adore him. I think it was almost a safely blanket for him. No matter what else happened in his life, he could always fall back on that. Brian is such a complex character. In some ways he’s very confident and self-assured, but in other ways he seems to need these little reassurances that he won’t be abandoned. I love him for all of these little complexities and nuances :-)

It’s been so great to hear your thoughts on this story. I can’t tell you – again – how much I’ve enjoyed discussing it with you. It’s such a treat to get to do this ;-)

*hugs*

P.S. – Seriously, don’t worry about your spelling. I am the world’s worst speller, so it would be super hypocritical of me to a) notice and to b) say anything *g*

First: "The early morning sunlight was of that delicate, rosy hue associated exclusively with midwinter, as the ephemeral sun crept along the horizon."

That there is some mind blowing beautiful writing. The story itself was far above the typical. This was some epilogue.

I wondered about time Brian spent away from Gus. It had to be difficult for Brian to spend time with Justin in New York and Gus in Cananda, and on top of that, Justin needed him at times. Wouldn't Justin have felt guilty about that.

I loved Brian's analogy of "It's a Wonderful Life" to explain his feelings about the course life had taken them both. It WAS enlightening.

Author's Response:

Thanks Sandra *hugs* I'm really glad you liked the reference to 'Wonderful Life' - the whole idea of the course and direction of life and fate has always intrigued me :-) Would Justin have felt guilty that Brian was having to spend time with him instead of with Gus? Perhaps. I suppose the difference is that Justin could always come to Pittsburgh if he needed Brian, but Gus didn't have that option. It would have been hard on Brian, for sure, but I always see Brian as someone who is able to 'roll with the punches' and to always seem to make things work. (Wasn't it Melanie who called him 'Mr. Teflon'?) I guess the situation isn't ideal for Brian, Justin or Gus, but it wouldn't be forever. Things can always change. Life can always change :-)

Thanks so much for reading, as always, and for your lovely and insightful comments *hugs* I treasure them all :-)

"Truth be told, he's been my teacher.."

This Brian is compassionate and honest with himself. I always felt they both learned from each other.

I've forgotten how well this was written, but I'm a little ambivalent about the ending. I couldn't see the relationship working from here.

I recently saw this rec'd at Getithere and decided to read this again. It had been years ago and I had forgotten how good this is. This is my favorite of yours and should have gotten a blue ribbon.

Summary:

Brian and Justin meet as children and become best friends and, later, roommates. Mikey is their closest other friend, and they (Brian and Justin) are both secretly in love with the other. (This will be as much a story about friendship as it is about romance, so Brian, Justin, Mikey, Ben, Brandon, Em, Ted, and Daphne will all be friends and all the same age (21). Lindsay and Mel are friends, too, but older, about 30.)

Thanks so much to pannkakan for the banner!

Way to go, Brian!

Author's Response:

If only canon Brian could have acted like that more often in response to his jealousy ... which he hates to admit but is nevertheless quite true

I loved this chapter!  The negotiations were the cutiest thing I ever read.

Author's Response:

The lawyer stuff comes back into play later, much to Justin's chagrin. Brian is evil enough without lawyering skills :-)

This was a very amusing and cleverly written chapter.  i can't wait for the update!

Author's Response:

I don't know if you're still around (it has been a million years), but I'm updating again. This fic should be done by the end of summer.

How did I ever miss this story? It's brilliant. No wonder you are a published author.

Author's Response:

Hi there-thanks for the lovely reviews you've posted for this fic and Snow Angels.  It's always a nice surprise to hear back from someone in the fandom. This was a fun story to write and I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

That cruise sounded perfect. The naked nelly queen Brian was hilarious.

Glorious. I didn't expect them to follow through with the bungee jump.

The image of the three nudes together sounds beautiful.
