Of course, the name he chooses is Brian's. He begins sending letters to "Mr. K," telling him about his life. Brian has no idea who is sending him the letters (maybe it's a crazy person!), but finds himself anticipating receiving the next one.

Date: March 31, 2010 Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4 Still adore this story! This bit in particular: He gave hubby a coat of paint, which wouldn’t have been too bad, except the stuff I used to write R.I.P. on the urn with, is bleeding through the paint and now hubby looks like something from a Tim Burton movie. I’m afraid it’s back to pasting pictures on hubby again. I think I’ll look for something like a naked Brad Pitt. The dried flowers didn’t make it through the last bout of temper and when we swept up hubby, he ended up with a lot of dead rose petals mixed up with him not to mention the odd dust bunny. A lot of him went under the sofa. I guess the kid hadn’t been as thorough vacuuming under there as he could have. Oh well, it will give hubby something to think about. He’s mixed up with dust bunnies and dead rose petals. Oh and the odd roach, the ones with legs, not the ones you smoke. Yes, it’s definitely a Tim Burton movie. I don't know why but every time I read that I start giggling hysterically :D

Plus there's still so much to explore - Brian and Mikey's reconcilliation (or lack of, depending), Justin & Brian spending more and more time with Gus (& JR), Brian learning to Dom... Date: January 18, 2010 Title: Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Good thinking with the boat Brian! It should help trap the heat and provide an extra layer of insulation from the wind & cold!! It's amazing how good canned food can taste when it's all you've got! :D Author's Response: I agree about the boat but I always thought Brian very clever so it did n't surprise me that he should make efficient use of whatever came to hand! It never ceased to amaze me how food my kids would normally turn their noses up at was suddenly really 'yummy' when we came home from the beach or other vigorous activity and they declared themselves 'starving' although too much of anything tends to pall after a while! This story is the result of the request by a wonderful reader of mine named Lorie. It begins in 2005. Justin is a young man in NYC who makes his living as the writer of gay porn and adult fiction. He has bigger goals for himself. He dreams of publishing the great American gay romance novel, but he has little to base it on. Justin does not do relationships and has little trust of others due to a painful childhood. Brian Kinney is the owner of his own ad agency which has taken on Justin's publishing house as a new client. Good thing I had already finished my tea or my computer would be a mess! That's exactly how my day at work felt today too... I love the way you take Brian and Justin, altering them only in the slightest of way, and then fit them so seamlessly into an AU in such a way that it doesn't seem AU at all. :) Author's Response: I am so happy to know that I was able to give you a good laugh at work. I spent 30 years on a manufacturing line and can well remember how welcome a good laugh was to break up the day. The pressure was dropping, the wind picking up, the water rising, and wispy strands of clouds passing overhead. A hurricane was coming, but I had no idea from where and thus what hatches to batten down. Of course, it happened a lot sooner than I expected and was a lot worse than even I imagined. (Those IM's *always* have me smiling and laughing!) I enjoy watching Brian sort through his emotions and thoughts about the relationship, where he's been and where they're heading. He just keeps on surprising himself, which is really fun to read. I really like that in this chapter we see Justin taking steps to overcome his PTSD and social anxiety. Even though the shyness and blushing are cute, watching him becoming the strong individual we all know he can be (like in the phone call with Lindsay) will be fantastic! Date: September 20, 2009 Title: Chapter 32: Chapter 32 Shock Waves Re-reading this chapter and knowing Brian was going to be OK, I was able to pick up on the reactions of the various moms in this chapter: Joan, Debbie, Jennifer, Lindsay, Aileen... quite lovely.
And even though I tend to rank Joan right up there next to Craig, I think this was a very realisitic portrayal of how she would react; her human, motherly response to her son's injury and finding out the way she did was spot on, IMHO. Author's Response: I completely agree with your opinion on Joan (obviously). Any mother would be seriously ticked off - even a bad one, to find out over the radio. I hadn't really thought about it - but you're right, there are a lot of moms in this chapter (LOL) I didn't even notice I did it.

One of those breathtaking smiles that seem to light up the world. He was a little dizzy and constantly felt like laughing. And dancing. Like a mug of root beer, bubbles tickled their way to his surface. Justin decided that this must be what it’s like if disco were always playing, everywhere you went. Disco is silly, but happy. The happiest music in the world. You can’t help but want to dance, giggle, shake your head, and smile so broadly your face aches. I love this description and I can totally picture exactly what Justin must look like when he's feeling that happy! One might ask how this was possible post-bashing, post-death threats, post-pariahdom, post-putting-off-school-for-a-year-because-he-couldn’t-afford-it. The answer was quite simple. Though it was now a two-parter. 1) Justin’s mystery man 2) Brian They made the world beautiful. And that, that, made everything possible. Love the explanation - wait til Justin finds out his 2 reasons are one and the same! I also liked the dazed grumpy Brian - I can totally see him being overwhelmed not only by the whole dating Justin situation, but by Cynthia bypassing him like that. Brian is clearly going to have to come clean with Justin though and I don't forsee that being an easy conversation, especially if Brian instists on being stubborn...

But like everything else with these two the actions are also conveying their emotions as well, the silent communication that is Brian & Justin. You did a fantastic job expressing Brian's emotional state at the very beginning and it makes complete sense that he would want (and Justin would want to give him) the caring and tenderness he missed in childhood and denied himself as an adult. Beautifully written. And did I mention the sex was HOT? ;-)

Date: September 10, 2009 Title: Chapter 33: Listening I loved this chapter and it didn't seem disjointed or overly fragmented at all to me; everything flowed really well IMHO. (Didn't notice any formatting nonsense either) ;-) I really enjoyed the parallels being drawn between Brian and Gus' childhoods and how the lessons Brian is learning from Dr. Stevenson re:his past & his parents is helping him learn how to be a better father. You said it best thru the good doc - Brian's always had a heart of gold, had the desire to take care of people, to make sure they got the best of everything. Now he's finally reached that point where he's emotionally mature enough to ask for help on how to accomplish that. I actually re-read most of this story and am still quite amazed at how seamlessly the story has unfolded and progressed. The transitions and emotional roller-coaster of discovery never seemed rushed or forced to me, anymore than they would in the actual series. I mean, you never get to see what's going on 24/7 and the characters' "lives" still go on outside of what we're allowed to see on screen (like going to the bathroom, commuting to work, etc.) I've also been in therapy and know that sometimes a session is nothing more than decompressing from the events of that day or week, and other times it can be totally intense. For the purposes of a keeping a story moving, you can't really mention all the little things that the characters go through even though as the author you probably have them in your mind so you might feel that perhaps scenes seem a bit short or not descriptive enough. I personally feel the pace of individual chapters and the overall story is fantastic (and believe me, as a former writing tutor I've read my fair share of stories where the pace has been either lightening fast with no explanation of how things went from point A to point B or the total opposite where every single last detail has been described ad nauseum.)

I hope it still will, even though this last chapter had such a break between it and the rest. I re-read too, so I hope that helped. You're totally right about pacing and having to hit the big moments. I mean, it's not exactly exciting to write about the mundane, much less could I expect anyone to read it! You also make a great point about Brian asking for help. He is getting much better at that. I think it does come from emotional maturity, coupled with being more aware of what he's actually feeling so he senses more of when he's getting to that point.

You do such an incredible job of illustrating the emotional rollercoaster that Brian is going through as he simultaneously deals with the hurt and anger with his past plus the security and happiness of his relationship & future with Justin. The phone call between Justin & Brian (well, both of them actually) I found especially moving- I could almost literally feel the tension and eventual comfort as the call went on. My roomate Carolyn just started teaching high school Biology this year and is facing similar challenges with her IAP kids. Both my parents and 2 of my aunts were also teachers so I can totally empathize! I almost went into Elementary ED as my major but wisely realized *before* I graduated that I would not be well suited (emotionally) to the task; I really need a job I can leave at work - I take home too much stress as it is nevermind lesson plans, etc. But I did teach 1st grade Sunday School for 3 years, does that count? :) I hope you can find some sort of balance and good strategies for handling the demands and stresses of this year. Lord knows I need to do the same thing with my job right now - if only my Director realized that while saying the words "Inventory Optimization" takes only mere seconds to utter, the actual process of revamping 50+ units will take quite a bit longer. Especially since that's only one of four major projects he wants done in addition to my regular, day-to-day stuff (which takes at least 4 hrs a day) and not even mentioning all the little things that pop up in between needing immediate/urgent attention... but hey, it's job security right? ;-) So relax. You chapters are always worth the wait - and as much as we hate to admit it, real life issues come before BJ issues. :) Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm excited to hear your feedback about the phone calls. It's very hard for me to tell how they play out for readers because I can't describe much physical interaction and have to rely so much on just the dialog, so I'm thrilled that it worked despite that limitation. I think you have a great insight about being emotionally suited to the job. Sometimes I don't think I am; see, I'm very emotional, but not expressive of it (except in writing!). But I've found that the key to my job (sad, perhaps, but true) is just to forget everything that happened immediately. It's amazing how often someone asks how the day was and I can't remember anything. Balance is awfully tricky. It sounds like a good goal for both of us -- otherwise it sounds like they'll swallow you whole! Thanks so much for your support! :)

Date: October 18, 2009 Title: Chapter 36: Honesty I can't remember if I reviewd last chapter... it's been a stressful few weeks. The husband of a dear friend of mine passed away last weekend after a battle with brain cancer. The funeral was this week and work was unbelievably stressful (more than normal)... I've never been so happy for Friday afternoon to come! This chapter was fantastic. Poor Dr. Stevenson - he needs to learn how NOT to be surprised by Brian & Justin's antics ;-) And Brian better NOT be thinking of sending/pushing Justin away again...
Oh, and it may be my sleep addled brain but I think I caught a spellcheck typo: I haven’t seen this idealization from Brian. But I saw the denial of severity. The passing over, the mineralization of what happened to him. Was that supposed to be minimization? Later, ~Michelle

Date: January 02, 2010 Title: Chapter 50: Yes, Beautiful I LOVED Brian's drama queen moment - It was something I can totally see him doing, mostly because it was relatively short in duration. Plus, he's been accessing his "inner child" more, so to speak, in trying to resurrect the person he was becoming before his parents' abuse - so throwing a hissy fit to me isn't too OCC. The fact that he caught himself acting like that, and compared it to Gus (when he was FOUR), was hilariously funny :) As I mentioned before, I can totally see the progression of their relationship into this new "phase" if that's even the right word. Even in canon, Brian may have been the one physically dominant for most of their relationship but Justin was always emotionally dominant. Justin decided where, when and how their relationship played out (in my mind anyway.) This scene was lovely and touching and very sweet -perfect way to end the year! Why hasn't he been queening out more these last 50 chapters!?! I like your connection to the "inner child" aspect. I did have that in the back of my mind -- I wrote the scene, thought I was just being cutesy / having fun, and started wondering if I should leave it in, because in some ways I think it is a good representation for that inner child as you say. And it was a very "surface denial".. I'm happy to hear that you feel that the D/s side is natural. I see it that way and have tried to write it as such. .. This was simply breathtaking on so many levels I really am quite at a loss for words adequate enough to express my love for this chapter and this story. I also agree with seeing Sunshine's role as a Dom as being supporting & nurturing rather than simply controlling. It's not so much about Sunshine being in charge as much as it is creating a safe environment physically & emotionally where Brian can let go of the tight control he has (or tries to maintain at least) in all aspects of his life and allow himself to become Beautiful. You really should make a fanmix of all your "inspiration" songs for this story when you're done :D Sometimes a boring weekend is good after a stressful/long week... :) Author's Response: Awwww, thank you so much! Date: January 25, 2010 Title: Chapter 52: In Public Wow. There's so much here I'm not really sure where to start... I love the relationship between Dr. Stevenson and Brian. Even though Brian is the "patient" it's clear that Dr. Stevenson has learned a lot from their visits as well, and all that makes him even better at his job. The scene between Craig & Justin was tense and edgy and perfect... and I'm glad you split the chapter up. I agree that both encounters deserve their own time & focus. And I've got to try the floating thing when I get stress headaches at work - seems like that's been every day for the past two weeks :( Thanks for updating! :) Author's Response: You're right -- Dr. Stevenson has learned a great deal from them. Date: January 25, 2010 Title: Chapter 53: Closing the Door Wow. I've literally been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to figure out how to tell you how perfect this chapter is, how brilliant. I think everything about this part flowed well- Brian's emotions, Justin's reactions, Joanie's self-centered, self-righteous attitude.
