Justin opened the gate of the small manor. Home. Before he realized what surrounded him, a small energy ball reached him, causing him to retreat to the door jamb.
'Jussin! Daddy said that if I behave myself and eat all the green of the plate, we could go to swimming pool! '
Justin looked up from Gus to his handsome father. Brian arrived behind Gus and was laughing softly as he rolled his eyes.
'If that's so, it's better to go the public swimming pool, so you can play with the other kids, if you want.'
'Can we, seriously, Papa?' Gus looked hopefully through his big brown eyes.
Before they could answer, Gus ran to his room, but not before Justin tell him what he needed to put in the backpack.
Once they were left alone, Brian came up behind Justin and wrapped his waist. Putting his chin on his shoulder and brushed the tip of his nose against the cheek, asked him how the meeting had gone.
Justin tensed before relaxing against her husband's body. It was so fast that any person would not have noticed it, but Brian was not just anyone.
'Justin? You went to a meeting, didn't you? '
'Yeah, of course.' Justin said trying to demean the question. Then reached the waistband and tried to distract him from the vague answer. Brian didn't give him much of a fight, in recent months everything seemed run by them. Graduation, marriage, Gus' adoption, the beginning of the work in the art department of Kinnetik ..
Brian let his mind wander while Justin took care of him. Since they married, Brian had not had any desire to go out tricking, so they gave a chance to monogamy. And more recently unprotected sex. With this thought, Brian thought back to the question, did Justin wanted to go back to tricks and condoms?
'Jus .. You do not .. '
Justin's eyes widened when he realized what Brian was talking about.
'God, no! I went to an appointment, but this was not work. I went to the doctor. '
Brian tensed while waiting for an explanation from Justin. Justin bit his lip. He heard small hurried footsteps and whispered quickly: 'Gus will be a big brother.'
'WHAT?'
'Papa, I'm ready'
Justin embraced the little man, praying that he had not heard anything. It was not like he wanted to abort, but he didn't want people to know, at least for now. Until he was sure that Brian supported him.
Brian. Brian was leaning against the wall, paler than he had ever seen.
To allow his husband to recover, Justin took Gus to the car. Brian breathed deeply three times, and on autopilot emptied the bag that used to take to the gym and stuck his trunks along with Justin's, towel, sunscreen, among other things, and some totally unnecessary for an afternoon in the pool but essential for himself at the moment, as Gus' teddy bear.
Brian almost ran to the Jeep, the absence of Justin's touch made the rest seem like a dream. Once he joined them in place of the driver, from the corner of the eye, he peered Justin rubbing a hand over his stomach involuntarily, lingering.
On impulse, he put his hand on top of his husband. In a comforting gesture assured him that he was not going to leave, for sure. A sure thing that lasted until they reached the pools.
There wide-eyed, in the midst of a flood of hysterical children and exasperated parents he sighed and looked at Justin desperate. Justin nodded, and Brian turned and went in search of a bar looking for something to make him forget.
Justin led Gus to a semi-secluded place, where the sun bathed, but did not feel like melting any minute. Then started with the preparations as any parent-hen, sat one overexcited Gus beside him, put his hat (where you could read 'my fathers and my moms went to the Pride Parade and only brought me this hat' - Deb's Gift), smeared him with sunscreen, filled buoys, counted the hours to finish digestion and joined him in the water.
Gus felt like a fish in water, and, not moving far away from Justin, was making friendships, among them Maximilian, Max for friends - and other children in general. Gus noticed that unlike most, Max was alone. Also noticed that Max was with some difficulty, and tried to get the attention of Justin, but he was distracted by the crowds trying to find Brian, and did not realize.
Then Gus managed to take Max to the pool stairs and helped him to get to their stuff. When wrapped him with the towel, noticed the large bruise. Gus panicked thinking it was his fault and giving directions to Max for this not leave the place, began to run the swimming pools to seek his father.
Brian left the bar after the twenty third Coca-Cola, which in his logic if there was no alcohol then he should drown his sorrows in calories. Seeing his sunshine, approached the pool.
'Jus .. I've been thinking, and .. Where is Gus? '
'Huh?'
'You know, dark hair, hazel eyes, a mini me. We often call him our son. That Gus'.
'He's over there, playing'
'Huh, Jus? No, he's not. '
'WHAT? Oh God, where is he?!?!?! '
Justin hurried out of the water and rushed to the towel, praying that there would be Gus. Instead of Gus, he found a small red-haired boy, freckled, vacant eyes and bruises all over his body.
Maybe it was the pregnancy, maybe it was his husband's past, maybe it was because of his missing son, but whatever the reason was, Justin fell to his knees in front of Max and hugged him, crying.
Brian, having taught that if Gus ever be lost should address the competent authorities, went to the lifeguards' cabin.
What he saw as he approached, froze his blood. Gus in a hurry to get to the cabin, crossed the road running without looking. Brian tried to reach his son but was too far away. By luck, or by a God he did not believe the driver had a swifter reaction and stopped before the worst happened. Gus with shock fell back and began to sob.
Brian reached then his little man, who clung to the father's neck, sobbing. Brian then decided to head toward Justin.
When he arrived, Justin was sobbing like his son, but clutching a small red-haired boy, whose eyes had unshed tears. Brian had a vision of a family with three little boys, one blond, one redhead and a brunet walking in front of him and Justin.
Not wanting to risk, Brian took his boys to the hospital, where they gave Justin and Gus sugar water to calm down.
When calmer, Gus told his parents what had happened. Justin and Brian exchanged glances in agreement. Both, together, would do everything in their power to be able to save the little Max, and if it were possible, perhaps adopt him.
A quick text message to Mel, and the process was started. Then they both smiled when Max cried for them, 'Daddies!'
Brian squeezed Justin's hand and whispered
'I am not able to do this alone, but with you, I think so.'
It was not the ideal day to go to the pools, it was not the first Taylor-Kinney family day, has not even been a day of illuminations. But it was a day outside, Taylor-Kinney against a world of surprises.
