The Call by Galesgal

Chapter 1: The Call

Brian was in his element. Today was going to be a good day, the people at Minecroft Pharmaceuticals were in the bag. That’s Minecroft not to be confused with Minecraft which was what his husband, and his daughter had been referring to for the last month. He knew he could do this, the stars were shining down on him, nothing could ruin this day.

“Brian, your sister is on Line 2.” Cynthia voice announced over the intercom.

“Tell her I died.” He replied.

“She sounds upset.”

“Cynthia, what on earth makes you think that telling me she’s upset would make me want to answer her?”

“I think something happened to your mother, she’s not calling from her home that’s why i didn’t automatically ignore it. The call came from Pittsburgh General.”

Brian released the intercom to take a moment to compose himself. He didn’t have time for this today, he had been in the zone to take down this presentation, not to mention his joints were killing him and he didn’t care what his husband said it was not a sign of old age, and now he had to deal with this shit. Well Joan better be dying.

“Put her through.” he jabbed the intercom angirly.

“Jesus Brian, why did it take you so long to answer me?” Claire demanded.

“Hello to you too Claire, what is it that I can do for you today?”

“Brian I need for you to get here quick, it’s about mom.

“She stopped being my mother the day she told me God punished me for being gay by giving me cancer, she stopped being someone i could tolerate when she refused to come to my child’s christening.”

“How is Pepper doing?” Claire asked sweetly.

“Don’t make me realize that i tolerate you, what is happened to the warden now?”

“She died Brian, mom’s dead.” she added.

Justin was getting more and more excited as he walked around his offices. He had done this, well not just him, he and Michael. The world was changing, and if they didn’t make the Rage Movie so what, he could make it himself, and be unapologetic about it. After a long talk and a little backing from Brian, Rage Animations was born and today he was officially a boss.

“Has it all sank in yet?” Daphne asked.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” he asked hugging his long-time friend.

“Are you kidding? My best friend opens his first office ever, where else do you think i’d be? Why didn’t you have a launch party? Where’s Brian?” she asked looking around.

“Brian had a big presentation that he had to do today, and we’re going to have a proper launch party this weekend.

“A launch party after you open, how interesting, although that explains why you guys want me to take Pepper this weekend. You’re going to get into naughty activities and you don’t want a kid around.” she giggled.

“Yes, but come on you wanted to have her this weekend anyways, so it’s best to make the most of it.”

“You’re right i did. I’ve been missing my sweetie with my internship picking up, but i’m not going to let my career keep me from being a mom I can do both.”

“Exactly and you’re a great mom, she loves you, but I need you and Brian to please stop calling her Pepper that’s what you name a dog.”

“Aww it’s adorable like her, she’s spicy like a Pepper. Speaking of I better go and pick her up from school, i’ll have her at home by seven. Congrats, and how are you so organized on the first day?”

“Oh that would be my assistant Bianca, she’s a lifesaver.”

“Oh really? Well i’m going to have meet this Bianca next time, i better go, give Brian my love.” she kissed her friend before leaving.

It didn’t take Brian long to find his sister. She was the woman in the waiting room with two demons sitting on either side of her. She was more distraught than she should be. There mother had died of either natural causes, or alcohol poisoning, but they were grown people. She was in her fifties, she shouldn’t be crying like this. Her children should be crying like this if she were dead, but no she was crying as if Joan had been hit by a bus.

“Get a hold of yourself, people are watching!” he shouted taking her by the arm.

“Brian mommy is dead!” she lost the little bit of composure she had left, and threw herself upon him.

He wanted to fling her off, but he saw that some people were looking at him. He was sure how he would console her in her time of need. He was going to be a total monster. Claire loved Joan, and well if Debbie died he would want someone to console him.

“It’s okay Claire. She’s in a better place now, what can i do for you?” he asked knowing immediately he would regret it.

Justin was trying not to, but he couldn’t keep the smile from forming on his face. He had his own business. He was going to have his on animation for the world to see. He just hoped he didn’t seem to arrogant.

“You’re not.” Bianca his assistant stated.

“Are you sure? I mean to have all of this and i’m not thirty yet, I don’t want them to think that i used Brian. That’s one of the things that i have feared the most that they would think that he’s some kind of Sugar Daddy and I-----”

“Breathe Blue, you have nothing to worry about. You got here based on your talent. Rage was going to be a fucking movie a few years ago, and that didn’t go through, with how the world is changing now the internet was the next place to go. With all the streamers out there, Rage is going to be an International hit.” she beamed.

“Tell me again why i hired you?” he joked.

“You saw something in me. I’m not sure what it is yet, but you said that it was something that you wanted to mold. I’m down for it, i mean you are amazing. When i was taking your class, and learned how you got so talented after being bashed. You are a fantastic artist, i’m thrilled to be your assistant. I would do anything to be here. Why i would’ve had sex with you, I mean you’re hot.”

“Do we need to take a step down to HR, and talk about Sexual Harassment?”

“No, i know that you’re off limits. So can i treat you to lunch boss?”

“I don’t know, i mean what would i look like leaving when everyone haven’t even found their offices yet?”

“LIke the boss, lets go.”

“Okay, but i’m going to have to call Brian, maybe we can get him to meet us there.”

He should have known asking his sister what he could do to help her was a bad idea. Now she was somewhere picking out a coffin to put their mother in, and he was here at the house. It was weird being in her things, he had done this for his father, but this was different. His mom always had everything in just the right place. If you went in her stuff you had best put everything back as you found it our they’d be hell to pay. Now he was trying to find the perfect dress for her. He was going through the dresses, but then something caught his eye.

His mom had always had this box in the top of the closet that he told him never to go in. He remembered when he was younger, and she had caught him with it, and it was like she had caught him with porn. He still remember the scar that he had on his hip from when she knocked him into the dresser as she snatched it away. Now would be the perfect time to open it up. He noticed that it was even heavier now than it was then. Today would be the day that he solved that mystery. After he took this call.

“Hello, how do the offices look?”

“They look great, but it’s missing something. I’ll get Bianca to help me figure it out.”

“Aww the world best assistant, well next to Cynthia, what are you two up too, i predict that you are no longer at these offices.”

“She dragged me away to have lunch, join us?”

He could feel that sunshine smile beaming down on him from the other side of the telephone. He would kill to be able to be there right now, but he can’t.

“Sorry Sunshine, i can’t do that today?”

Justin could pick up immediately when something was on Brian’s mind and he knew that something wasn’t right with his partner.

“Brian, is everything okay?” he asked concerned.

“No, mom died.” then he dropped the call.

Brian knew that he would pay for that later, but the whole time that he had been talking to Justin he had been going through the box. He was shocked that it was filled with letters. Letters to his mother from a Shara Cross. Who the hell was that? Was his mother a secret lesbian? He had to read at least one:

Dear Joan,

You never returned any of the letters, so I’m guessing you are at least reading them. Joan you were a good friend to me, and it will take me forever to apologize for Jack and I did. When i met you that afternoon and whenever you spoke of your husband I always expected some kind of monster, there was no way to know that it was my Jackie you spoke of. He was always kind to me, and when he said he loved me I believed it. I still do, but I understand what had to be done. That’s why i’m indebted to you. You did something that any other woman in the situation would have never done, and for that I thank you. I saw your daughter, she’s quite lovely, and your son…..he really does favor Jack a lot. He’s becoming a grown man soon, you think maybe you’d tell him about us sometime? Maybe not, I know you think that it’s not true, but i really do love you Joan, always have and I always will.

Your friend,

“Fuck!” Brian shouted to a quiet room.

WTF by Galesgal

Chapter 2: WTF

Bianca watched closely as her boss stood there just holding his cellphone. She knew that he had just gotten off the phone with his partner, it’s not like he had walked away to have the conversation, but something had happened she could feel it. He looked as if the wind had got knocked out of his sails.

“Everything alright Blue?” she asked carefully.

“I was just talking to Brian, he can’t make it to lunch.”

“OH well maybe it’s for the best. I don’t need him around here judging me for having a second helping of pancakes.” she joked.

She noticed that her friend did6 come back with his usual sass.

“Is everything okay?” she asked concerned.

“The reason that Brian couldn’t join us is because his mother died.” he finally looked up at her.

“Oh no that’s terrible. Well come on, let's pack up some stuff and take it to him, i’m sure right now what he needs the most if a good old hug from you, and maybe Pepper?” she asked a little confused at the change in her friends demeanor.

“Listen Brian’s mother is sort of a pain in the ass, and when he told me she was dead I was seriously surprised that he didn’t tell me that he was someplace dancing a jig. He seemed sad, and that’s what scared me the most. He didn’t share much so he doesn’t want me there, but i wonder what’s happening where he is.

“Brian didn’t understand what was going on? He had walked into this house looking for something to bury the devil in, and now, now what had he just read? Shara Cross, he knew that name. He knew he had heard it in his lifetime. He thought maybe he had heard it a lot. Shara Cross, Shara Cross, Shara Cross, when was the first time he had heard it……..

Okay Sonnyboy listen up, today we are going some place and we’re going to meet a whole bunch of people. Now some of them may be a bit mean to you, but don’t worry about that. Today is a the birthday of a good friend, and she’s been dying to meet you.

“Do iI have to wear this tie daddy?” Brian smiled at his father

“Yes, we want her to see what a smart young man you are.” Jack smiled.

“What’s her name?”

“Her name is Shara, and she’s going to love you.” he smiled rubbing down his hair.

“Jack a word.” Joan called out from the doorway.

“You stay right here, get your shoes.” Jack smiled once again.

Brian knew that when his father told him something if he knew what was good for him he’d listen, but sometimes he would sneak away and listen to them talk. So he was quiet when he snuck up to the bedroom door.

“What the hell do you think that you’re doing?” Joan shouted.

“You said that you had plans today with Claire, so I’ve decided that Adrian and I had someplace to be.” he explained.

“You will not call him that! His name is Brian, that is the name I gave him, and that is the name that he will be called. I know your plans for today. You think i don’t remember what today is? When did she arrive?”

“They arrived yesterday. We are going to the park, everyone will be there. They want to meet him.”

“They want to meet him? That’s bullshit! She wants to meet him, and then she’ll tell her lies and introduce him, and no one will no the truth. She has no problems because nothing in her life has changed. She ruined us, but she is as happy as the day I saw her. I should’ve have known that she would be that way, but i didn’t want to believe the things that my father said.

“Don’t you dare bring him into this! You can’t feel the way he does, and love Brian.”

“I love him because he is a victim, and he will never know the truth about his father and his whore!”

She didn’t have the to put her hand up he had smacked her so hard. Once her vision cleared she saw Brian standing in the doorway.

“Brian get out of those clothes and put on something to make a mess in.” she smiled.

“Dad said that we were going someplace special.”

“Your father will be going but not you, stay here with me and we’ll do something fun. I know we’ll make Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cake.” she smiled.
“Okay.” he smiled

She watched as he ran off happily, before she turned around to face her husband.

“You had no right to do that!” Jack spat.

“I had every right, and you need to remember that. You need to let Shara go, because she let the two of you go a long time ago. You did what you did, and in the end she didn’t choose you! The worst thing of all is she didn’t choose him!

End Flashback

He remembered that day. He remembered it now, but when he was younger it didn’t seem as if it was like that. She was loving, she was loving, why was she loving? Why was she trying to take up for him? Who the hell was Shara Cross? Why didn’t she love him?

He went back to the letters. They were so many, but he was trying to put them in order. He had to know what was going on. h e knew he was quite young, so he was going to have to go and find one of the earlier ones. It didn’t take him long to put them in order by the day they were postmarked. He picked the first one and braced himself for the worst.

Dear Joan,

Who the hell do you think you are? This was not a part of our agreement. It was my birthday, you had no right to keep him away on my birthday! That’s why we didn’t tell you because we knew that you would never allow it. It’s your way of punishing me for what i did to you. I’m sorry, how many times must I say that I’m sorry. Jack and I never meant to hurt you, but what about the sacrifice that i’m making? What about what i’m losing? You have Jack and you have our son. You know what i have, and you think that makes things better. It doesn’t, i’m in hell. I’m in hell everyday, and as my friend, as someone who said that they loved me you were supposed to make it better! You didn’t. You’re making things worse, and no i will not stop sending letters! I will send them until he is an adult, and i will send them until you forgive me and realize that i will always love you.

Brian tried to think about his memories, and he knew that Shara had come up alot. He knew that she was something. There was something more, and with what he had remembered and with his memories he only had one thought. What the fuck was going on?

End Notes:
Bigger questions right? I know that you are wondering what is going on? In many ways this chapter may not make sense and that’s the point. All you got is the memories of Brian as a boy, and a letter that makes no sense if u don’t know the context. The next chapter will add more back story and then the letters will make sense as a whole. Just stay with me, I hope you are still enjoying it.

The Secrets One keep by Galesgal
Chapter 3: The Secrets One Keep

Justin had been thinking about Brian since he had ended that call with him about an hour ago, but he still hadn’t got the courage to show up at that house. He couldn’t go there. He had never gone there, Brian had never wanted him to go there, and even though now Joan is dead, he didn’t feel right going there, and he wouldn’t. He would hold down the fort here.

“Daddy!” Gemma shouted as she exited the building.

“Hey Gemma, did you have fun today?” he asked as he gave her a hug.

“I did daddy, where’s Brian?” she asked as she looked around for her other father.

“Sweetheart, I need to have a very important conversation with you okay, something happened to your father’s mother today and it might make him sad.”

“Something happened to Gramma Debbie?” she asked almost panicked.

Justin couldn’t help but smile when she thought of Deb as his husband’s mother, because well she really was when it mattered.

“No sweetheart Debbie is fine, do you remember your father talking about Joan?”

“She’s mean.”

“Exactly, but something happened to her today and she died. Do you remember what I told you happens if someone you love dies?”

“You told me that they go to heaven, but Daddy told me that when Joan died she was going to burn in hell.” she smiled.

“Of course he told you that. How about we go and have some ice cream, and then we’ll pick up something special for dinner tonight?”

“Yay,” she shouted gleefully as she ran for the car.

Brian didn’t know how long he had been sitting there on the bed, but he heard when his sister had entered the house.

“Brian!” he heard her shouting as she came up the stairs.

“In here Claire” he told her putting the lid on the box.

“I made the arrangements, all they need is for you to come in the morning and bring the dress. Did you find anything, if you can’t find anything suitable they said to let them know and maybe they can help us provide something,” she said entering the room.

She had noticed how quiet Brian seemed to be, and then she saw the box on the bed.

“What are you doing with this? These are mom’s things, you were to never open this box!” she shouted trying to get a hold of the box and its contents.

“Why is that Claire? What do you know about the letters in this box?” he shouted.

“Nothing. Letters, what are you talking about I don’t know anything about any letters.” she stammered.

“You see I want to believe you so much Claire, but then I realize who I’m talking to and then I know that I can’t, so I will ask you again, what do you know of the letters in this box?”

“Nothing, I mean I looked in there once, and I looked at the photo and mom got so mad, she told me to never go back in there. I like the photo though. It had Aunt Shara on it.

“Aunt Shara? Who the fuck is Aunt Shara?” he asked

“Well you’ve seen her so you know she’s not our real aunt, but she use to come around here a lot when we were younger. She and mom were good friends, and I remember I use to play out back with her son Jamal on the swing set, but then something happened, and she was never around again. Sometimes mom would meet her at a diner a few hours from here, but she told me not to tell anyone.”

“What photo?”

“What?” she asked confused.

“You said that you use to look at a photo of her, what photo are you talking about?”

“Brian what does any of that have to do with what is going on right now, we have to bury her soon, and you’re going through her things. This can wait until later….”

“What picture!” Brian shouted.

Claire hated her brother sometimes. He tried to act like he was nothing like their father but sometimes he was just as evil as he ever was They were ways as a sister that she knew that she had deeply betrayed him, but they were so many things that if he just knew the truth, it would make things far worse than he could ever imagine.
“Don’t worry about what picture. You need to stay out of mom’s things!” She shouted slamming the top of the box closed.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he asked trying to grab it back.

“Brian, mom never wanted you to see that box, and you need to leave it be.”

“Leave it be. Leave it be. Oh yes, I’m definitely going to leave it be now that you told me too. I”m going home, you find something to bury your mother in.” he told her leaving the room.

Claire kept her mouth shut and slowly watched him leave. She listened for the car to crank up, and when she finally heard him leaving she knew that she could take a deep breath. It was happening. Everything was happening and she was the one who was going to have to deal with the aftermath. Joan and Jack were now resting comfortably in their graves, and she was the one who was going to have to deal with Brian when he found out the truth. She had let so many things happen to her brother, she was the reason for so many things, but this, this was on them and it wasn’t fair. One thing that she had always loved about her brother and she never told him was that he could always bounce back from something. He was the strongest person she’d ever known, but this-this was something that would surely break him.

She remembered when she found out that Shara wasn’t the nice person that she thought she was……..

“Mom, you will not believe who was outside when I got here!” Claire shouted as she enters the house.

It was easy for her to find her mother. She was in her new favorite spot, having a glass o wine like she always was when she got home from school.

“Look, mom, it’s on Shara, she came although the way from Chicago, and look she brought me a present!” she shouted holding up the bag she held in her hand.

‘Thank her and get upstairs.” Joan told her.

“I wanna hear about the move,” Claire whined.

“Get upstairs!” she shouted spilling the glass of wine she had been sipping.

“Yes, mother.” Claire stomped up the stairs.

“Go into the nursery and watch your brother.” her mother added once she passed her.

She had thought that her mother would have been happy to see her Aunt Shara. She really had turned into a mean woman since she had left, but she and her dad had. She thought that when she walked in with her that she would’ve been as happy to see her as she was, but it was far from it. She wished that she would have been able to go in her own room, that way she could listen to the conversation real good, she wouldn’t be able to hear anything in the nursery with Brian.

When she walked in her brother’s room he was standing up in the crib. He was getting bigger and bigger every day. She was eight, and she was going to be the best big sister ever. He was good at standing, but he couldn’t walk yet. She was glad that he wasn’t the type of kid to try and climb out of the crib.

She was good at lifting him out of his crib, but right when she got him she noticed that her mother would have never heard if he cried out because she had taken the wrong end of the monitor downstairs she was going to be able to hear what was going on downstairs. She turned up the volume and did her best to listen to the two women downstairs.

“What are you doing here Shara?” Joan asked.

“I’ve made a mistake Joan, I’ve come for my son.”

Joan nearly choked on her wine. It dribbled down her mouth as she sat the glass down.

“I’m sorry you want your what back?”

“I know that what i did was horrible, and you stepped up in a role that no one would have expected of you, and i thank you for that.”

“You thank me. I didn’t have much off a choice did I? I come home and here you are with that sad little face, and your sad little story playing on the ounce of decency that remained in my heart for you.”

“How many times do i have to say i’m sorry?”

“What are you sorry for? Sleeping with my husband, or leaving me behind?” she demanded.

“I didn’t leave you behind. The plan was for you to leave him, after he hit you the first time. You were supposed to leave him, take Claire and get out!”

“How was i supposed to do that after what you did? You slept with him, left him, and left that poor child on the doorstep like an afterthought. You are horrible! You don’t get to come and take him back, he’s mine!
“He’s not! He’s mine. I didn’t sign any papers, this was an agreement that we made together, there was no legal adoption. There didn’t have to be i left him with his father, and now i’ve come to take him home where he belongs.”

“Where he belongs? Really? What does Isaac have to say about this?” Joan asked already knowing.

“Isaac and I have decided that we should take a break for awhile. We’re not getting a divorce or anything, but I’m going to be staying with my mother, and i told her what happened and what I did, and she told me that I-----

“Let me finish that statement for you. When you told your mother, a pastor’s wife what you had done she couldn’t even look at you. When she decided to have mercy on your and your other children and let you in, she told you that if you came you best have Brian or not come at all? Am i right?”

“Please Joan, I”m sorry. There’s not a day that doesn’t go by that i don’t think of him.”

“You lie. All you and Jack did were think of yourselves. You thought that he’d be with you, and that you’d live happily ever after but you were wrong. Then you thought that you would keep things going with your husband, but Brian couldn’t stick around. He would be constant reminder, he was God shaming you for your sins, but you didn’t realize what a precious gift you had in him. When i told Jack I wanted to have another baby, he had me put on my finest dress, took me out to dinner, and then he told me I don’t wanna have another fucking kid! That was it for me, Claire was it, but you left him. I’ll do what i can to protect him from my monster of a husband, and a bitch like you! Now get the hell outta my house!” she shouted getting in her face.

That was the day that she learned that her little brother was different. She never loved him any differently, and she kept everyone’s secret. She took the picture from her pocket, she had done good to distract him while she pulled it from the back of the box. It looked just as she remembered. It was a picture of her Aunt Shara, her dad, and two babies. She knew one was Brian, and she had no clue what happened to the other one. She just felt so tired, and sad, and for once it was just about her mother.

End Notes: Sorry about the last entry. I thought this would be out but the chapter just got away from me. I hope it was worth the wait. More mystery, do you any of you get it yet? I promise there with be Brian and Justin moments in this, I just had to set up a few things. I’d love your thoughts.
To Do the Unthinkable by Galesgal

Chapter 4: To Do the Unthinkable

The Past

“What are you doing here?” Shara asked looking in the face of one Jack Kinney.

“You told her! You told her, how could you do that Shar?” he asked angrily.

“How could I not? She and I had become friends. She told me things about you, things that I had to find out for myself and then meeting you. When i met you, you seemed like a completely different person. I gave you my body and I shouldn’t have. I’m a married woman.”

“Not happily. You said so yourself.

“That’s not the point! I stood up and took vows, and gave myself to him in the house of the lord. You did the same thing. I met her in a time of grieving. I knew you both were grieving and i played on that. I deserve to lose my job for what i’ve done.”

“You haven’t done anything yet, what you are thinking of doing now is the wrong thing.”

“What other choice do i have, i can’t take home a baby to my husband. I can’t take home your baby to my husband!”

“All the times that we were together, you kept asking if i were ashamed of you. Would i walk the streets with you? I told you that i would, everyday, I’d gladly take your hand and make you my wife. I’ll leave Joan”

“No, you can’t.”

Shara Cross sat at her kitchen table reading the obituary of one Joan Kinney. She had just died the day before, her obituary was already in the paper. It was a hard read, apparently after she had left where she previously lived she gave up on her career. It was probably Jack’s doing, he probably told her she had to stay home with the children. She knew in a way that she wanted that, she had wanted to have two kids, and then she’d leave work, and stay home and raise them. She wanted to be a good mom, but she was cold at times, and she was apart of that reason. She didn’t want to be happy that her old friend was dead, but she knew that if she was dead that before the week was out Brian would know the truth, and he’d hate her.

“What has you looking sad?” her daughter asked.

“Joan Kinney passed.” she sighed.

“Oh my God mom!” she cheered hugging her mother.

“Wilhelmina Barnes, we will not celebrate the fact that a woman is dead!” she scolded her daughter.

“Mom it’s all about to be over. Jack wanted him to know before he died, and she didn’t tell him. She’s religious she took it to the grave. Soon everyone will know how she stole your son!”

Shara smiled at her daughter. She had grown up being told one thing and now she too was going to know the truth. The truth about the night she did the unthinkable.

Joan was holding it in. She would not let this man see her cry. She wouldn’t let him see how he was breaking her yet again. He always acted as if she didn’t miss Brian too. He was just as much a part of her as him, but she had had done the right thing. She had been to the counseling, and that’s where she had almost been convinced to leave him. That maybe he truly was what they call a toxic relationship, and she would have been off better to just cut her loses and start over with Claire. She had considered it, and she wasn’t going to be alone when she did it. She had made a great friend, and she wasn’t going to be alone, but she remembered the bible, and her vows and decided to stay. She had forgiven Jack for his betrayal, he had told her of the affair, but not with whom, and they were going to work through this, but now he wouldn’t give her what was missing in her life, all she wanted was a baby.

“So are you just not going to talk to me?” Jack asked.

She was about to let him have it, but when she looked up she noticed a very nervous Shara standing in their driveway. She wouldn’t come and tell what she was going to do now that she changed her mind, would she?

“Shara what are you doing here?” she asked calmly trying to hide her uneasiness.

“Shar, what is the meaning of this?” Jack asked in anger.

Joan took that moment to look at him, to look at them.

“No Jack you wouldn’t, Shara after what i told you, you wouldn’t right?” she asked in disbelief.

“Can it Joan! He knows that i told you, just stop it. We all have lied enough, he knows that i told you about the two of us.

“I just met with him that once, when you asked me to talk to him about his grief. We talked the whole night, and i just didn’t see the man that you described. I’m telling you that I didn’t mean for it to happen. Jack is a good man Joan, he really is.”

“Of course you didn’t, he wouldn’t show you that person. He wanted to fuck you so he turned on his charm I’m sure, what do you want?” Joan asked clearly upset.

Jack could feel the tightness of his chest, because he knew what was happening. She was going to show Joan the children. She had come to destroy his life.

“We have a problem.” she stated sitting the matching car seats at her feet.

At that very moment Joan didn’t care what they had to discuss she was awestruck. At her feet sat what had to be the two most beautiful babies she had seen in the longest time. One had sweet caramel skin, and her eyes were closed so she couldn’t tell the color, but when she smiled she had dimples that she just wanted to stick her fingers in. She was so beautiful, and of course she saw Shara’s coloring, but she saw Jack, this was Jack’s child. She was bringing her Jack’s children. She was a forgiving woman, and now she was getting her prize.

“We’ll take them.” she stated.

“What?” Shara asked.

“I’m no fool, your husband found out and now he doesn’t want to be reminded of how you slipped. I totally understand. Having to have them in your house as a reminder of what happened will forever haunt him whenever he looks at them. Don’t worry Shara, I will take them, and I will be the best mother they have ever had, and we’ll tell them of you and your sacrifice.” she smiled pulling the curls from the girl’s forehead.

“My sacrifice?” she questioned.

“That is why you’re here right?” Joan asked confused.

Shara bounced from one foot to the other as she looked at the two people in front of her. They had welcomed her into their home, and she was supposed to show them that there was away to move on after they had lost their son, but she was just destroying the little bit of stability that they had left, and she couldn’t believe what she was about to do.

“I don’t want you to take them.” she stated looking down.

“Oh my God!” Joan spoke in horror putting her hand ot her mouth.

“What?” Jack asked confused.
“Don’t you get it Jack? Your precious Shara has come to you begging that you take your son because he’s white!” she shouted looking down at the child.

“She is tired of the stares right. People will easily believe that this little angel is yours, but they think you’re the nanny of him. Your husband probably can easily pretend that he’s her father, but when he looks at little Jackie here everything comes back to reality. You really are something else? How dare you think we’d take one and not the other? How can you as a mother want us to?”

“You don’t understand i don’t want to Joan. I have no other choice. What kind of life would he have growing up in our neighborhood. I love him so much, I want the best for him, and you know that the best for him right now is with the two of you. You could raise him as your own, and then when he’s older you could tell him about me. Maybe I could stop in some time.” she asked hopefully.

“No! If you want me to do this, you have to leave him and never come back.”

“What?” she asked in disbelief.

“You can’t just decide he’s not good enough for you because of the color of his skin, he’s going to make it harder for YOU, he didn’t ask to be born. You can’t just decide that you don’t want him today, and then think you can come back later. You leave, and you leave forever.”

“Jackie, do you agree with this?”

“I wanted to be with them both, I wanted to be with you.” he sighed walking into the house leaving the two women alone.

Shara didn’t know what to say to Joan, what could she say really? She had done the unthinkable, and was standing there wanting to do yet another unthinkable thing. She was giving Joan what she so desperately wanted, but she was also claiming him, wanting to keep him for herself. She just needed them to see that she didn’t want to do this. She HAD to do it.

“Can i write to him? I just want him to know that I didn’t want to throw him away, i want him to know that i cared for him?” she asked desperately.

“You can send him letters, but I decide when or if he sees them..”

“Okay. Just let me say goodbye.” she sighed.

End flashback.

“Mom i know that this seems scary, the thought of his rejection is probably overwhelming, but once you let him know how she just came and took him, that you and daddy were on a break and when he came to his sentence, and you went back to get him she wouldn’t give him back. They moved away, and they had documentation that proved he belonged to them. I’m still not quite sure how that worked out. How did they do that?”

“That’s a story for another time, what brings you by?” she asked trying to pull herself away from her current situation.

“I’m meeting Bianca for lunch over at Taylor Animations I think that’s what it’s called. She wants me to meet her boss. Apparently he is this big shot that turned down being extremely famous for love, you know how your granddaughter likes to dramatize everything. She’s really trying to pump me for information about my birthday, she is probably trying to figure out my gift.”

She noticed that she had been talking, but her mother wasn’t saying anything. She had been paying attention until she mentioned her birthday, but after that she was just quet.

“Earth to mom! I know what you’re thinking, and i’m thinking it too.” she smiled.

“What?” her mom asked alarmed.

“It would totally be awesome if he could come to my birthday party. He would be the perfect present, we could all get to know him, and maybe by his birthday we would really be a family. Well i just dropped by for a quick hello. You take care of yourself, see you soon.” she smiled kissing her mom on the cheek and exiting just as quickly as she came.

End Notes:

This Chapter is now in two parts because it’s much longer than I had ever imagined and it’s taken me forever to write it and I didn’t want folks to think that oh lord here she is starting another story and not finishing it. More a lot sooner than later.
