That was brilliant, Michael makes me so angry he needs to open his eyes and see the Brian of today. Brian is so lucky to have such a wonderful friend in Ted. He sees the Brian of today and that is so important. Fantastic work as always x

Author's Response:

I apologize for the delay in responding.  Michael has such tunnel vision and narrow minded view of Brian. If he is not careful, he will no longer be "the best friend"

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: October 26, 2020 10:18 AM · On: Chapter 37- The Accident

Thanks to Ted who was able to deal with Brian and his guilt. Michael is still just as moron but I hope Deb has a more realistic and loving reaction. I'm not talking about girls who are going to be as bitchy as possible. Thanks for the update.

Author's Response:

I apologize for not responding earlier, I must have missed all the comments.  Ted is a real friend to Brian and I really like the way his character is supporting him in this universe.

I didn't think I would like this story but finally took a chance a few weeks ago and I have to say that I am kicking myself for not starting it earlier, because it is different, interesting and excellant.

Michael finally knows...finally.  What a moron. Ted is a great friend and sober friend.  I am anxious to see what happens next.  I really hope Deb doesn't disappoint me.  I know Michael and the munchers will, but I really hope Deb doesn't. But at least he will finally know who his real friends and supporters are.

I know you are busy, but hope you are able to update soon.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for letting me know that you are enjoying the story. I'm glad that you took a chance on the story and found it something you enjoy.  I don't think Brian would have told him this soon, but fate had other ideas.  We will have to see what Deb will do.  Thank you so much for telling me that you are enjoying the story.  It means a lot to for you take the time to let me know.

I didn't want this chapter to end. Brian is coming such a long way and to hear him speak out so openly is fantastic. Plus having that confirmation about Gus must add to his confidence and his heart.

 Incredible work x

Thank you Vickie.  I'm so glad that you are still reading and enjoying the chapter.

I love this story more and more with AA meetings and all that they bring. Like Brian I can also know Lindsay's reaction, but maybe if he tells Debbie she can stop Michael, who knows! I would also like to see the art of Justin, Brian's third friend what a wonder. Thanks for the update.

Making amends won't be easy.  Most people will find it hard to believe.

Author's Response:

I think the hard part about amends is that he has to figure out who he needs to make them to.

Fantastic work once again. This meeting really made Brian think didn't it. I loved their chat afterwards. Justin really spoke well to Brian opening his eyes to so many things. Brian's emotion in his voice when he spoke about his son really touched me. I am really proud of Brian and can't wait for the next chapter. Thank you for writing this x

I really liked this chapter on the need to make amends. Brian analyzes his life a lot and it must be hard for Mister No regrets No apologies but he's moving slowly but surely. He knows that Ted Emmett and Gus are there for him towards his new life and Justin of course too.

Another incredible chapter of this story. This was like looking into Brian's heart and soul and seeing how he truly feels. I loved how he listened and asked questions at the meetings. His conversation with Justin as to what hobby he could take up was great maybe he could go to cookery classes and Justin could go with him. Gus's love for his dad is so beautiful. I cannot wait for more and more x

Love this chapter.  Michael can't seem to think about what to do without thinking he knows how Brian will react, even though he's wrong.  Ted knows Brian much better than Mikey does.  Justin is enjoying being with Brian.

I love this story, it's very sweet.  Love the charactor of Emmett, he's such a loving friend.  I remember a canon scene, the zuchinni man episode when Brian walks into the diner the next morning.  He kissed Mike and then put his hands on Emmett's shoulders and growls.  Love that.

Now that Brian knows Lindsay asked for money she didn't need will he be able to have an honest conversation with her? Will Melanie be approachable about the problem?

Hi, Sandy!  Trying desperately to get caught up on my reading.  RL - UGH.  But I want you to know how much I'm enjoying this. I don't know anything about alcoholism, but I think you're doing a great job of describing how Brian would handle it. I love how you have him and Emmett as confidantes. I think that is totally realistic, as is the slow progression you are describing, not only with Brian's journey regarding abstinence, but also his growing bond with Justin.  I much prefer a good plotline over simple PWP anyday, as well as a little hurt/comfort and angst mixed in, and you are doing a great job of including all of that.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your story. Thank you for posting this on here. :)  ~Kim

Author's Response:

Kim:

So glad you are enjoying the story.  As you know from reading my other works, I like the slow buildup and am not really into writing PWP.   Alcoholism is a complicated disease and one that needs to be unraveled.  Justin is helping Brian unravel his sobreity.

Reviewer: YumYumPM (Signed) · Date: April 17, 2019 03:26 PM · On: Chapter 10- No More Secrets

I think that telling Emmett is a good start.  Unlike Michael, Emmett takes what Brian says seriously.  Would telling Deb and getting her to understand help with stopping Michael from being a shit?  Justin posed the questions in a good way.

Author's Response:

Michael has always been more into what he wants than what might be good for his friend.

Reviewer: TrueIllusion (Signed) · Date: April 15, 2019 10:20 PM · On: Chapter 10- No More Secrets

Yes, he just needs to be able to separate the two activities. Maybe Ted can be a good support in helping him learn how to do that?

Author's Response:

Brian has a lot to work through and I know he is learning, but right now he is still pretty confused regarding his life and what he really wants.

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: April 15, 2019 07:55 AM · On: Chapter 10- No More Secrets

I love Emmett he is smart he can choose his words and questions without rushing. I think he'll be a great help against Michael and his complaints! The discussion with Justin allows Brian to ask the right questions and he understands that it is necessary to keep Justin as godfather before putting him in his bed! I do not know much about addictions in general, but it's certainly effective to have someone who makes you think about why to analyze the past but stay in the present. Great update.

Author's Response:

Thank you.   Emmett is a good friend and I think he was underutilized in the series.  He was always protective of his friends.

Read this in one go.

The idea is so interesting. I thought of doing something similar but never got enough intel to do it properly.

I'm curious about Brian and Justin's journey and for how long they can keep their hands off each other.

Author's Response:

Britinaykin:

I am actively writing the story and have no idea how many chapters there will be.  I can't even begin to guess.  There is still a lot to explore with Brian and his addiction and coming to understand why he drinks as well as how his life might change.  I understand if you are waiting to read the story until it is finished.  I am keeping to a bi-weekly posting schedule and might be able to post weekly once the school year is over, but I can't promise that.

Confiding in Emmett is probably a good idea.  I'm sure he could come up with interesting if not unusual things that Brian can do.  Recipes for  non alcoholic drinks.  And once he meets Justin, he'll be team Brian in the match making department.

Those are great ideas.  One day the gang will probably meet Justin, but that will be far in the future.

I'm loving Brian's voice in this story. One of the things that I missed in the show was some real "everyday" Brian, so I totally loved the brief moment in the park when he teaches Gus how to play soccer.

I hated the chapter's ending point because I love every Brian/Emmett interaction and I can't wait to read more of it, but I guess I'll try to survive :-)

Author's Response:

I'm glad that the story runs true in this story.  I really think that Brian has always had a problem with drugs but the series never addressed it.  I have always thought that the little everyday things in life are what given the story a personal touch.

Brian had the good idea to talk to Emmett, he will be there for him and help him. We'll see how it goes. His path to sobriety makes him better understand the reality about his friendship with Michael (whom he can not trust) and Lindsay who apparently loves his wallet more than him. I can not wait to see Emmett's role. Thanks for the update.

Author's Response:

Emmett is a great friend and will support Brian.  Not a fan or Lindsay or Michael and totally agree with your assessment.

Great update.  Glad he told Em and will have someone else on his side.  Linds is  annoying as usual.  Could just see him playing soccer with Gus.  Terrific writing.

Ooooh...Brian starts to feel all the things he's been masking with the alcohol. Looking forward to exploring the man beneath that armor in this verse with this Justin...

Author's Response:

Brian is really acknowledging that he actually does feel rather than sweeping feeling under the rug.  I think he may start to have apologies and regrets.

Hi, Sandy!  Still enjoying this story very much. I like the slow buildup of friendship between Brian and Justin, and how Justin used Brian's love for his son to prevent him from drinking.  I can actually see this happening in Brian's life, since he was always so dependent upon alcohol in his social situations.  Great plot!  Looking forward to reading the rest. Thank you for posting this here. :)  ~Kim

Author's Response:

Kim:

Thanks for the feedback.  It is a little different than my normal stuff- mix between canon and fanfic.  I always wondered why Brian did not have more issues with his drinking.  He really could be considered an alcoholic- you don't have to be drunk all the time to have that diagnosis.  I wanted to explore that and hope that I am doing it justice.

Aw so glad Brian reached out to Justin and he latched on to the one thing to help Brian see a goal

Author's Response:

Brian is beginning to realize that this sobriety thing is not as easy as it appeared.  He needs support and that is the one thing that Brian really balks at.  He will do anything for others in his life, but for himself, it is really difficult.

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: March 17, 2019 08:41 AM · On: Chapter 8- First Trial

It's good that Justin has found some good words to repel Brian's alcoholic desire and we also understand how Michael could be bad for him. Brian still has a long way but he seems to be on the right track.

Author's Response:

Justin was really happy that Brian called and he was able to successfully get Brian not to take that drink.  Michael is a very selfish man who only thinks about how every action impacts him.  Brian's road to sobriety will not be quick.  He has been drinking for a long time and it will take a long time for him to change his ways.

I really wish I could boot Mikey down the stairs.  It was good that Justin managed to say just the right things.  Enjoying this.

Good for Brian on having the presence of mind to call his sponsor!

Author's Response:

Brian really wants to conquer sobriety and I think this will not be his first call to Justin asking for help.  Of course, asking for help is difficult for Brian so it will be interesting to see how he handles that issue.

Reviewer: ThatAj (Signed) · Date: March 10, 2019 08:17 AM · On: Chapter 7- Mikey's Lament

Just caught up on this! Really enjoying this twist and the slow build up of Brian and Justin actually getting to know one another.

I can imagine Debbie showing up to babysit Gus so Brian can go to Babylon and smacking him upside the head. He made the right call here, not just for his sobriety!

I wonder what will happen to Brian’s friendships with Mikey and Lindsay as he gets sober. They both enable in different ways.

Author's Response:

I'm so happy to hear that you are reading the story.  I'm sure that Alcoholism and drug use are close to many readers and it may trigger some uncomfortable issues.  Like you, I like the slow build and day to day examination of their lives.  Debbie's relationship with Brian runs hot and cold and I haven't decided how she will react to this new information.

I really like this story. Brian begins to see that many other people have the same reasons for drinking and are doing the right thing to stop. Of course Michael does not help but Brian is right not to tell him the truth at least for now. Let's see what Justin will find to move Brian forward. If you make updates every 2 weeks it's fine, I started to worry about LOL

Author's Response:

Thank you for your continued support of my story.  It is a little different from my traditional work, but I'm glad you are reading and enjoying it.  Brian has a lot to learn about his life and his sobriety.  It may be a long journey. Of course, that may mean a long story-  (lol)

We learn a bit more about Justin and Brian, too, with all that anger in him. Tonight Justin put him back on the right path. I hope they will continue to talk to each other. It's good that Brian can tell someone about his frustrations that are the basis of his alcoholism.

Brian is beginning the long journey and thankfully Justin is willing to help him.

Great update.  Brian is opening up little by little.  Glad that he realizes he has a problem.  Knew a woman once who drank like a fish, all day every day, she denied it and even when she stumbled and slurred her words her husband acted like all was fine. Found out she paid her 16 year old niece to secretly drive her to the stores that sold alcohol.  The girl kept quiet since she was getting at least a hundred a week for driving. It was so sad, but she didn't want help.

I think Brian will have a hard time getting Justin in bed-  Justin doesn't want to hurt Brian's sobriety.

Reviewer: mrs_koki (Signed) · Date: February 11, 2019 06:47 PM · On: Chapter 5- A New Monday Dawns

I hope two things happen for Brian.

1) He stays sober and his family don't give him a hard time like Mikey and co are wont to do. At least he has Ted and Blake if they do.

2) Him and Justin can get to a place where being together won't affect either one's sobriety.

Yeah, that's how AA meetings and the program works. Some people who are recovering alcoholics have physical symptoms of their body recovering from drinking so much for so long. My Uncle on my dad's side didn't really have any, if my father's to be trusted on that score, but everyone's different.

Author's Response:

Eventually, he will have to tell the family about his sobriety and it should be interesting to see how they react.  I hope that Justin and Brian will eventually be able to work things through.  Thanks for writing.

Brian can't base his wanting to be sober solely on which meeting he may run into Justin. Maybe Justin should just come out and tell him no.

Still think Brian should tell the family. Even stupid Michael would understand once he saw that Brian was driving a different car.

Ted is trying his darnest to help. The spinners are going to come in handy I'm sure.

Author's Response:

i think Brian will obviously tell the family, but right now he is a little too vulnerable.  I think he wants some success under this belt before telling them.

Ted is really a great support for Brian. He knows how to help him discreetly to move towards sobriety. I liked this moment of Brian with Gus it's so tender Brian is a good father.

Brian is a good dad to Gus, its Lindsay who constantly makes him question his commitment.

Reviewer: BritinManor (Signed) · Date: January 30, 2019 04:29 AM · On: Chapter 2- All Dressed Up and No Place To Go

Interesting perspective here. Brian has given this some thought. I think he's spot on with his precepton regarding Lindsay, Debbie and especially Michael. Michael won't want Brian to change. He needs to have Brian stay the same. Perpetually young. Always the stud, so Michael can bask in it and say, "look at me. I'm Brian's best friend", and get his noteriety that way. Lindsay isn't much better. How did she say it when her and Mel were going to get married? She'd be disappointed if Brian stayed at a wedding and didn't go to the White party? can't remember just how it was said, but the sentiment was there. You'd think Debbie would be happy, though. Brian Kinney growing up.

I'm happy Brian has Ted and Blake. Brian was right though. He can't have Blake as a counselor, but Ted and Blake are the best friends he can have right now. They have both hit rock bottom. From there, the only place to go is up. It will be interesting to hear Emmet's POV. If we are following canon, and it was season 3 where ted had his bout with Crysatl, and it's five years later, Gus is what? 8? And Brian's 37? Just trying to put an age to everyone.

I remembered after I left my first review that you missed something. Justin mentioned receiving his chip for his first year of sobriety, but you didn't mention Brian getting his white chip for joining AA.

HUGS  ~Cathy

Author's Response:

Cathy:

Thanks for the mention of the white chip for joining.  I was not aware of that one.  I will put it in the story soon.  As I stated in the comments of the third chapter, while I'm familiar with AA ( being a Human Service Worker) I do not have personal experience.  I welcome any input and knowledge that anyone can share.  As you know I'm not a fan of Michael or Lindsay and most of my stories do not depict them in a positive manner.

The timeline is not an exact match to Cannon-  Gus is 10- so Brian is 39 but Justin is 35.  The age difference is less.  In this universe, there is no concern that Justin is too young for Brian.  He needs to be considered his equal in order to be effective in helping Brian.  I do not think Brian would be inclined to listen or enlist Justin's help if he saw him as too young.

Thank you for your input.

I hope Brian will let Justin in at least enough to let him sponsor him. Looking forward to seeing how things go for them at tomorrow's meeting! Really interesting AU. I'm also eager to hear more about Justin's past.

Author's Response:

So happy that you are enjoying the story.  It is an interesting AU in that I'm using parts of Canon except the fact that Brian and Justin do not meet when Justin is 17.  I think the meetings will be an integral part of the story.

Reviewer: YumYumPM (Signed) · Date: January 28, 2019 01:21 AM · On: Chapter 3 The Hook Up

Brian doesn't understand why he's so interested in Justin, which from my pov is a good thing.  Looking forward to more.

Very good chapter.  I think you are doing fine with the writing.  All addictions are different and all alcoholics are different.  Keep up the good work.  This is fiction so if an error is made no one should be critical.

Great story. I really like that you have Brian struggling with his decision to get sober and showing how  his use of drugs and alcohol has become inter-related with almost everything he does routinely when out socializing. A hard road ahead ... his damn parents have a lot to answer for! Waiting eagerly for the next chapter :-)

Author's Response:

Thanks.  Drinking or doing drugs is not something that just happens. There is a lot of psychological issues that go into addiction.  Casual use is a very different pattern than addiction and in my opinion, Brian definitely met at least some of the criterion for addiction but yet he was never called on it or had any consequences from his use.  I hope to do this topic justice.  I hope I continue to write an intereting story.

Ted was there for Brian and gave him the support he needed. I hope Brian takes Ted and Blake up on their offers to have his back. Those two guys tumbled to the bottom of the rabbit hole but clawed their way back up. Great update.

Author's Response:

Thank you.  I really like Ted and felt he was always a much better friend than Michael- his supposed "best friend".  Ted did bring his life 180 degrees around when he got clean and started working for Brian.  It just made sense that he would be there for Brian as well.

Reviewer: sophiesmom (Signed) · Date: January 21, 2019 05:51 AM · On: Chapter 2- All Dressed Up and No Place To Go

I adore the relationship Brian and Ted have built up. I see Brian does too.

It seems a bit easier for him to relate what happened and why. I think most of the family would be rather proud of him for making such a drastic change to his life. Mikey not so much, but the others, yeah, proud.

Author's Response:

I liked Ted a lot in the later seasons, but in the early seasons he seemed so unsure of himself.  Brian gave him a huge self confidence boost when he started Kinnetik.  Brian always cared for him even in his Cyrstal days.  That is why he told Em to leave and when he got clean he hired him.  I think Mikey is vested in keeping Brian just how he was so he could seem superior and have a place in Brian's life for being the one to stand up for him.  Mikey had Brian to stand up for him in his youth so this is the only way Mikey knows.  Mikey doesn't have a lot of original thoughts-  ( not a Mikey lover- )

Good chapter!!  I'm glad that Brian went to Ted and talked with him.   With Ted having his struggles wth crystal in the past, he knows all too well what Brian is going through and can be a good influence for him.    And yes, Michael is his friend as well, but Brian is right, Michael, as immature as he is, would never understand Brian's issues, and just enourage him to keep doing what he's been doing.

Author's Response:

Thank you.  Ted is the one who encouraged Brian to get help and this time Brian actually listened.  Michael just doesn't see anything but what he wants.  Michael always sees Brian through rose colored glasses where he is infallible.  I think Michael will have a hard time with Brian's sobriety.
