Way to go Brian that's exactly how to handle them. I love how Cynthia looks after him as well she is a wonderful friend to him. I look forward to seeing Justin call over and the fault out from this.

Author's Response:

Brian knows how to handle Lindsay and he did it perfectly.

Score one for Brian!  Love it!

Brian can be as sneaky as Lindsay when it is something he wants.

What a wonderful chapter even if Justin doesn't show up to much.  Brian has all his ducks in a row and the girls are finding out he's found ways around their meddling.

Author's Response:

Thank you.  Justin is still around and he will be there soon.  Thank you for your wonderful comments.

B*tches! They don't deserve Gus. Looking forward to the day they meet Justin. > I love this story. >Cat

Author's Response:

Yep, that about describes them.  It might be a bit before they meet Justin but it should be interesting when they meet.  So glad that you are enjoying the story.

I like the way Brian knows how to handle Lindsay. He learned well and the restraining order is a two-way street. I'm sure that with his father and Justin, Gus will have a great weekend. Thanks for this update.

Author's Response:

Brian is adept at handling Lindsay and Lindsay is adept at handling Mel, so it is a nice circle.  Gus will enjoy any time he spends with Brian.

I loved the way Brian handled the witches and picked up Gus.  Thanks for the new chapter.  Looking forward to more.

Author's Response:

Brian knows how to push Lindsay's buttons, even in he doesn't want to rock the boat.

Reviewer: vic32 (Signed) · Date: January 12, 2021 08:23 AM · On: Chapter 40- Messages

That was so emotional and oh boy Lindsay is trying everything isn't she and that Mel they better not succeed. I'm so glad Justin sat with him and listened to those messages with him as I think it really gave him strength. I can't wait for more.

Justin is learning a lot about the people who caused Brian to drink.  It's amazing that Brian hasn't made a play for Justin, but it shows that he's growing as a person.

Brian is still figuring out who he is.

The bitch train is on and I hope it will crash into the wall. I know Melanie's hatred for Brian is eternal but she knows he's right, she's a lawyer. If she thinks she's intimidating him, she's wrong and Lindsay is too. I was so sad for Gus, her sanity is disturbing by his mother, not his father. Debbie reacted well to Brian's sobriety let's see her reaction when he takes Michael out of his life. Thanks for the update it was pretty quick! Happy new year.!

Author's Response:

Happy New Year!!!.  Debbie may not be as happy when she learns about Brian's ultimatum to Michael.  As for Melanie, yes she knows Brian has rights and she is furious.

Great chapter! Can't wait to read more.  I really want the munchers to pay for all their crap. I was hoping Mel would be more accepting, but nope.  I hope there are consequences for their actions very soon.

Glad Deb seemed supportive.  Hope that continues when or if Brian cuts the whiner out of his life.

Looking forward to the next chapter and hope it will come soon.

Author's Response:

Mel is reeling as well.  I'm sure that Lindsay has put  spin on the financial consequences of Brian's sobreity.

Author's Response:

I'm thrilled that you are enjoying the story.  I had some time to write so updates should be coming a little more regularly.

Reviewer: YumYumPM (Signed) · Date: December 21, 2020 11:57 PM · On: Chapter 39-Aftermath

Darn, I was hoping to hear who had called and what they said.  Justin would probably have good advice on how to deal with them.  I'd start off with Ted's call since that one would be possitive.

Author's Response:

WEll, the next chapter should hopefully answer your questions.

Reviewer: vic32 (Signed) · Date: December 20, 2020 09:33 AM · On: Chapter 39-Aftermath

Excellent chapter and I loved hearing Brian talk about how AA was for him. He truly let out so much of how he was feeling about it all. I love that he didn't let how Lindsay reacted affect him. He is so lucky to have Ted and Justin in his corner. I can't wait to hear what's in those messages.

Incredible work as always x

Oh, man... always leaving me wanting more. I would imagine fighting for sobriety would be an uphill battle.

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: December 19, 2020 10:13 AM · On: Chapter 39-Aftermath

This is another chapter where we understand Brian's journey and the help he receives from Justin and Ted. There is still a long way to go, but I am sure he will succeed. It's good to see Brian getting close to Justin and really trusting him. Now I can't wait to listen to the messages too and we can expect the worst with Lindsay and Mélanie. I mean they're going to try to make him feel guilty but he'll know how to counter them. Have a happy holiday and take care of yourself.

Author's Response:

I really like how he is starting to have confidence in his ability to call Justin and lean on Ted.  He is no longer Brian ( the man who does everything by himself)

Reviewer: vic32 (Signed) · Date: November 23, 2020 11:33 AM · On: Chapter 38- Lunch Anyone?

Wow, wow a million times over. That was incredible and I was holding my breath listening to Brian talk. First to Justin about all the messages and early knock on his door. Then Ted and then Lindsay. The conversation with her was out of this world everything was handled with perfection. He really did himself proud.

You did yourself proud with this fantastic work x

Author's Response:

Thank you.  I'm so glad that you enjoy my writing and the story.  I really liked the lunch scene.

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: November 23, 2020 09:00 AM · On: Chapter 38- Lunch Anyone?

Brian knew how to hit Lindsay, he knows her so well. I can't wait to see what she will say to Mélanie. She's a lawyer and knows the law and what Brian can claim and maybe she will appreciate things being clarified. Michael is still the asshole who's never been a true best friend. Debbie has a nice reaction and Ted and Emmet are there quietly. I also really appreciated that Brian called Justin in the morning when he didn't know what to do with all the messages and with a few words Justin helps him make his decisions. Beautiful chapter as always

Author's Response:

Brian knows them all so well.  Melanie probably never expected Brian to question her custody of Gus.   Michael is such a pain and Brian would do good to leave him behind.  Brian is beginning to accept his friendship with Justin.

Reviewer: HJ1225 (Signed) · Date: November 22, 2020 08:06 PM · On: Chapter 38- Lunch Anyone?

Great chapter! I was happy that Deb's reaction was good. Michael (I hate the name Mikey) is a nutbar who needs to be in a straight jacket and padded cell.  Loving Ted & Emmett.

Loved how Brian handled the money grubbing leech.

Kudos!

Author's Response:

Deb knew that Brian was hiding something, now she can know that he doesn't have cancer.  Michael is a leech-  no love lost for that character

Reviewer: YumYumPM (Signed) · Date: November 22, 2020 05:16 PM · On: Chapter 38- Lunch Anyone?

Sadly Michael was never the 'best friend' he claimed to be.  Lindsay is selfish and I hope that Melanie turns out nicer.

Author's Response:

It will be interesting to see what Mel does, but I think she is probably going to be worried about the money piece more than anything.

Reviewer: wellreadbunny (Signed) · Date: November 22, 2020 04:20 PM · On: Chapter 38- Lunch Anyone?

So good. I am proud of Brian. Mikey is just a turd. I can't wait to see what Lindsay says to Mel.

Author's Response:

Mel will most likely be angry and furious with Lindsay.  I can just see Mel telling Lindsay that if she had not been quite so geedy, Brian may have continued to provide money for Gus.  Now that Brian has figured out the degree of support that Brian has given, the cash will stop.

Author's Response:

That was brilliant, Michael makes me so angry he needs to open his eyes and see the Brian of today. Brian is so lucky to have such a wonderful friend in Ted. He sees the Brian of today and that is so important. Fantastic work as always x

Author's Response:

I apologize for the delay in responding.  Michael has such tunnel vision and narrow minded view of Brian. If he is not careful, he will no longer be "the best friend"

Thanks to Ted who was able to deal with Brian and his guilt. Michael is still just as moron but I hope Deb has a more realistic and loving reaction. I'm not talking about girls who are going to be as bitchy as possible. Thanks for the update.

I didn't think I would like this story but finally took a chance a few weeks ago and I have to say that I am kicking myself for not starting it earlier, because it is different, interesting and excellant.

Michael finally knows...finally.  What a moron. Ted is a great friend and sober friend.  I am anxious to see what happens next.  I really hope Deb doesn't disappoint me.  I know Michael and the munchers will, but I really hope Deb doesn't. But at least he will finally know who his real friends and supporters are.

I know you are busy, but hope you are able to update soon.

I'm glad that you took a chance on the story and found it something you enjoy.  I don't think Brian would have told him this soon, but fate had other ideas.  We will have to see what Deb will do.  Thank you so much for telling me that you are enjoying the story.  It means a lot to for you take the time to let me know.

Now that Brian knows Lindsay asked for money she didn't need will he be able to have an honest conversation with her? Will Melanie be approachable about the problem?

Author's Response:

I'm not sure Brian wants to confront her.  He's still leary about the legal access to Gus.  Maybe when he is sure that he can see Gus, no matter what happens, then maybe he will discuss her lies.

Brian, who goes to school to find out about Gus' schedule, is excellent. Lindsay will finally be caught up in her lies. He and Gus are going to have a good time together. Gus is so happy to be with his father. He's a smart little boy who sees and feels things. Great chapter..

That had so many emotions in it and really touched me. It was so wonderful to see Brian say all of that. I hope that helped him to get the courage and strength to tell others about him not drinking anymore. I pray the lawyers can get him more time with his as his sons loves him and deserves more time with his dad.

I am really enjoying reading Brian's journey in sobriety. I really think in canon Michael was an enabler for Brian and Lindsay used him all the time. Looking forward to the next installment!

Author's Response:

I'm thrilled that you are enjoying Brian's journey.  I always wonder if people are still reading since it is taking so long to update and complete the story.  thank you.  I think Michael and Lindsay want Brian to be a certain way ( in their eyes) and any changes threatens their status quo.

Michael need to go to a meeting where he learns to do without Brian.  I love how Brian is talking things over with Ted.  Ted's a good influence, but then so is Justin.

Author's Response:

That would be an interesting idea for Michael to have a meeting to attend to deal with dependent behaviors.  Of course, he would have to accept that he is dependent on Brian first.

Hi, Sandy!  Trying desperately to get caught up on my reading.  RL - UGH.  But I want you to know how much I'm enjoying this. I don't know anything about alcoholism, but I think you're doing a great job of describing how Brian would handle it. I love how you have him and Emmett as confidantes. I think that is totally realistic, as is the slow progression you are describing, not only with Brian's journey regarding abstinence, but also his growing bond with Justin.  I much prefer a good plotline over simple PWP anyday, as well as a little hurt/comfort and angst mixed in, and you are doing a great job of including all of that.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your story. Thank you for posting this on here. :)  ~Kim

Author's Response:

Kim:

So glad you are enjoying the story.  As you know from reading my other works, I like the slow buildup and am not really into writing PWP.   Alcoholism is a complicated disease and one that needs to be unraveled.  Justin is helping Brian unravel his sobreity.

Reviewer: YumYumPM (Signed) · Date: April 17, 2019 03:26 PM · On: Chapter 10- No More Secrets

I think that telling Emmett is a good start.  Unlike Michael, Emmett takes what Brian says seriously.  Would telling Deb and getting her to understand help with stopping Michael from being a shit?  Justin posed the questions in a good way.

Author's Response:

Michael has always been more into what he wants than what might be good for his friend.

Reviewer: TrueIllusion (Signed) · Date: April 15, 2019 10:20 PM · On: Chapter 10- No More Secrets

Yes, he just needs to be able to separate the two activities. Maybe Ted can be a good support in helping him learn how to do that?

Author's Response:

Brian has a lot to work through and I know he is learning, but right now he is still pretty confused regarding his life and what he really wants.

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: April 15, 2019 07:55 AM · On: Chapter 10- No More Secrets

I love Emmett he is smart he can choose his words and questions without rushing. I think he'll be a great help against Michael and his complaints! The discussion with Justin allows Brian to ask the right questions and he understands that it is necessary to keep Justin as godfather before putting him in his bed! I do not know much about addictions in general, but it's certainly effective to have someone who makes you think about why to analyze the past but stay in the present. Great update.

Author's Response:

Thank you.   Emmett is a good friend and I think he was underutilized in the series.  He was always protective of his friends.

I'm curious about Brian and Justin's journey and for how long they can keep their hands off each other.

I am actively writing the story and have no idea how many chapters there will be.  I can't even begin to guess.  There is still a lot to explore with Brian and his addiction and coming to understand why he drinks as well as how his life might change.  I understand if you are waiting to read the story until it is finished.  I am keeping to a bi-weekly posting schedule and might be able to post weekly once the school year is over, but I can't promise that.

Confiding in Emmett is probably a good idea.  I'm sure he could come up with interesting if not unusual things that Brian can do.  Recipes for  non alcoholic drinks.  And once he meets Justin, he'll be team Brian in the match making department.

I'm loving Brian's voice in this story. One of the things that I missed in the show was some real "everyday" Brian, so I totally loved the brief moment in the park when he teaches Gus how to play soccer.

I hated the chapter's ending point because I love every Brian/Emmett interaction and I can't wait to read more of it, but I guess I'll try to survive :-)

Author's Response:

I'm glad that the story runs true in this story.  I really think that Brian has always had a problem with drugs but the series never addressed it.  I have always thought that the little everyday things in life are what given the story a personal touch.

Brian had the good idea to talk to Emmett, he will be there for him and help him. We'll see how it goes. His path to sobriety makes him better understand the reality about his friendship with Michael (whom he can not trust) and Lindsay who apparently loves his wallet more than him. Hi, Sandy!  Still enjoying this story very much. I like the slow buildup of friendship between Brian and Justin, and how Justin used Brian's love for his son to prevent him from drinking.  I can actually see this happening in Brian's life, since he was always so dependent upon alcohol in his social situations.  Great plot!  Looking forward to reading the rest. Thank you for posting this here. :)  ~Kim

Author's Response:

Kim:

Thanks for the feedback.  It is a little different than my normal stuff- mix between canon and fanfic.  I always wondered why Brian did not have more issues with his drinking.  He really could be considered an alcoholic- you don't have to be drunk all the time to have that diagnosis.  I wanted to explore that and hope that I am doing it justice.

Aw so glad Brian reached out to Justin and he latched on to the one thing to help Brian see a goal

Author's Response:

Brian is beginning to realize that this sobriety thing is not as easy as it appeared.  He needs support and that is the one thing that Brian really balks at.  He will do anything for others in his life, but for himself, it is really difficult.

Reviewer: marie-france (Signed) · Date: March 17, 2019 08:41 AM · On: Chapter 8- First Trial

It's good that Justin has found some good words to repel Brian's alcoholic desire and we also understand how Michael could be bad for him. Brian still has a long way but he seems to be on the right track.

Author's Response:

Justin was really happy that Brian called and he was able to successfully get Brian not to take that drink.  Michael is a very selfish man who only thinks about how every action impacts him.  Brian's road to sobriety will not be quick.  He has been drinking for a long time and it will take a long time for him to change his ways.

Just caught up on this! Really enjoying this twist and the slow build up of Brian and Justin actually getting to know one another.

I can imagine Debbie showing up to babysit Gus so Brian can go to Babylon and smacking him upside the head. He made the right call here, not just for his sobriety!

I wonder what will happen to Brian’s friendships with Mikey and Lindsay as he gets sober. They both enable in different ways.

Author's Response:

I'm so happy to hear that you are reading the story.  I'm sure that Alcoholism and drug use are close to many readers and it may trigger some uncomfortable issues.  Like you, I like the slow build and day to day examination of their lives.  Debbie's relationship with Brian runs hot and cold and I haven't decided how she will react to this new information.

I hope two things happen for Brian.

1) He stays sober and his family don't give him a hard time like Mikey and co are wont to do. At least he has Ted and Blake if they do.

2) Him and Justin can get to a place where being together won't affect either one's sobriety.

Yeah, that's how AA meetings and the program works. Some people who are recovering alcoholics have physical symptoms of their body recovering from drinking so much for so long. My Uncle on my dad's side didn't really have any, if my father's to be trusted on that score, but everyone's different.

Reviewer: BritinManor (Signed) · Date: January 30, 2019 04:29 AM · On: Chapter 2- All Dressed Up and No Place To Go

Interesting perspective here. Brian has given this some thought. I think he's spot on with his precepton regarding Lindsay, Debbie and especially Michael. Michael won't want Brian to change. He needs to have Brian stay the same. Perpetually young. Always the stud, so Michael can bask in it and say, "look at me. I'm Brian's best friend", and get his noteriety that way. Lindsay isn't much better. How did she say it when her and Mel were going to get married? She'd be disappointed if Brian stayed at a wedding and didn't go to the White party? can't remember just how it was said, but the sentiment was there. You'd think Debbie would be happy, though. Brian Kinney growing up.

I'm happy Brian has Ted and Blake. Brian was right though. He can't have Blake as a counselor, but Ted and Blake are the best friends he can have right now. They have both hit rock bottom. From there, the only place to go is up. It will be interesting to hear Emmet's POV. If we are following canon, and it was season 3 where ted had his bout with Crysatl, and it's five years later, Gus is what? 8? And Brian's 37? Just trying to put an age to everyone.

I remembered after I left my first review that you missed something. Justin mentioned receiving his chip for his first year of sobriety, but you didn't mention Brian getting his white chip for joining AA.

HUGS  ~Cathy

Author's Response:

Cathy:

Thanks for the mention of the white chip for joining.  I was not aware of that one.  I will put it in the story soon.  As I stated in the comments of the third chapter, while I'm familiar with AA ( being a Human Service Worker) I do not have personal experience.  I welcome any input and knowledge that anyone can share.  As you know I'm not a fan of Michael or Lindsay and most of my stories do not depict them in a positive manner.

The timeline is not an exact match to Cannon-  Gus is 10- so Brian is 39 but Justin is 35.  The age difference is less.  In this universe, there is no concern that Justin is too young for Brian.  He needs to be considered his equal in order to be effective in helping Brian.  I do not think Brian would be inclined to listen or enlist Justin's help if he saw him as too young.

Thank you for your input.

Good chapter!!   I'm glad that Brian ran into Justin at a meeting and happy that Brian was really listening to the stories the people were telling.    I think he will find a certain comradery with them all.   This really is a good place for him to be - people who are all dealing with similar issues.

Thanks-  I think he has a lot to review about his life and some hard decisions to make.  It will be a journey.  ( It appears that writing short stories is not in my repertoire- very often)

I do not know addictions but I think it takes a lot of courage and honesty to be able to talk about your life and your problems. I hope Justin can help. Great chapter.

Author's Response:

Thank you. It will take a lot for Brian to really look at his life and determine what he needs to change

Very good chapter.  I think you are doing fine with the writing.  All addictions are different and all alcoholics are different.  Keep up the good work.  This is fiction so if an error is made no one should be critical.
