I hate to be a downer, but I really don't understand what happened in this story.

It's okay. Although, you are the first one who didn't get it.

 Justin was in the airport waiting for his flight when he fell asleep (but the reader is not supposed to know this until towards the end) and had a 'vision' of his future in New York City; and in his vision, he wasn't happy. When he woke up and found himself in the airport still, his plans changed and went back to Brian instead. The repeatition of the word "Hey" was indication that someone was waking him up; be it the flight attendant or his subconcious telling him to do the right thing. And he did.
