I liked it because Brian and Justin both ended up together anyway, and Michael was shut the f*ck up, but you almost made me cry at work.... T_T I also would've loved to read about the reactions of the rest of the family and how Jennifer and Molly answered and dealt with everything after Brian and Justin were gone.... I imagine Molly and Emmett crying and Michael terrified and remorseful.... Anyway, hope to read you soon in another story! Happy Holidays! Kisses!

I really liked the way you handled this sensitive topic.  Loved the last scene where Brian and Justin are making love and really enjoyed having Ben show up.  Ben just listening was very cool. Thanks for sharing your vision.

I'm not crazy about HIV+ Justin stories, but this is exceptional.

This is so well written and in character.  I loved how you pulled our heartstrings and took the story in a very loving direction.

Wow that was wonderful but sad and then it ended on a positive note (pardon the pun). Justin trying to struggle alone and then coming back to the family who will settle around him and give him back his life. The sad part is Craig would be upset but resigned as he expected it to happen because Justin is gay.

This is a well, well crafted story. And so in voice for Brian and Justin. I love the turn-around about Justin using Brian's own bit of cliff-pushing, and whether he admits it or not, that's what it is. Very poingnant, with a hopeful ending. I loved every word of it.

We like to think we've come so far in our fight against HIV/AIDS, both on viral issue and the stigma issue, but we've not. It hits hard in the gay community, although it is by no means even remotely limited to that community. One of the hardest issues to get through, I would think, would be the self-recriminations for anyone diagnosed. The condom broke. It happens. And I can fully understand Justin's fear of passing this on to Brian. I have a friend who is so terrified of contracting the virus that he has completely cut himself off from any sexual encounter. Tragic.

And I have to voice in on the Michael issue. (Yeah, I'm a comment reader, too). i'll be the first to admit that i'm not a Michael fan. The character, as he was written in canon, was way too invested in Brian a very proprietary way. Grown men just don't act that way about their adult friends (even the ones they are in love with) unless there is some serious underlying control issues. I'm sorry, but there's a possessiveness in the canon character that goes way, way beyond the pale. With that kind of psychological issue going on I don't think it is any more of a stretch to imagine Michael taking a swing at Justin than it is to imagine Brian taking a swing at Michael. Which DID, of course, happen in canon. It's entirely believable.

Loved this. Thanks for presenting it.

Very good effort. But it leaves you wondering about everyone's reaction to Justin's news.

This story is nicely done.  Waiting for some more chapters.

Author's Response:

Thank you for the comment. I hate to disappoint but all my QAF stories are one shots. Thanks for reading though. :)

I want to be in Justin's corner in this fic. And for the most part I am. But I think the way Justin is happy that sales of "Rage" have declined is spiteful since he was the one who chose to stop doing the illustrating. Justin doesn't have to be a perfect person with no flaws.  But I get the idea  we are supposed to be cheering him on for this. It's a crummy attitude to take, and the fact that it hurts Michael doesn't make it less so.

Author's Response:

I think Justin would have been happy for Michael if Michael had handled the situation better. He would have been cheering him on if Michael hadn't been mean spirited and spiteful and deliberately done stuff with the characters of JT and Rage that he knew would piss Justin off. He puts Justin's royalties check inside the comic book each issue just to rub it in Justin's face. That's pretty spiteful. And that's ontop of all the other stuff it's inferred that Michael has done in the last year. Justin's not rubbing the declining sales in Michael's face. He's not badmouthing it on the streets or online. He's not causing a big stink about it or deliberately sabatoging it. He's just a little quietly happy it's not as good without his participation as it was when he had half the creative control and all of the artistic control. And in the show it wouldn't have been. We saw the conversations Justin and Michael had during the show. Without Justin it wouldn't have been half as edgy or as good. Without that balance the comic isn't of the same quality and the fans have noticed. It happens all the times. Book Series, comic book series, movie series, tv shows. The original product is good, half or sometimes all of the creative team leave and move on and the product quality plummets and goes down hill. It's part of the entertainment business. Michael is meant to be the antagonist for part of this story. His reaction to Justin's leaving is a lot of the backstory. And Justin's reaction to Michael's reaction is in my mind justified. And since the story is supposed to put the reader at Justin's back, on his side, that's what I was going for. I'm sorry if you disagree.

Wow. Just wow.

You knocked me for a loop with one. Justin being positive is the very LAST I would ever think of. I love the way you ended it so much hope that the boys will be alright. Love that Ben was gonna be there for Justin just knowing that makes me believe Jus will make it. You nailed all the things that make me hate Mikey. Jen was the fabulous Mom we all know she is. So very well done!!

Great story even tho it's so sad. I hate that part of the reality of gay life. You did a great job writing it, though. Hope your NaNoWriMo is going well! TAG

PS- I love reading comments and I just wanted you to know that while Michael in this story was IMO typical Michael - it was just enough to warrent the Anti-Michael warning and I loved it!  You couldn't have done a better job, I kinda wish you would write another chapter showing Michael's possible remorse for the way he treated Justin or even better his unrepentance.

Reviewer: Anonymous (Anonymous) · Date: November 19, 2013 04:40 AM · On: The True Comeback Kid

As someone who doesn't love stories where Michael is unrealistically treated as a human sized demon I'd say this is truely an anti-Michael story.  Appreciate the warning and don't have to come here if I don't want that.  But I've always been puzzled my what anti-michael means.  Is it just his worst traits from the show emphasized or is he a monster who hits/rapes/kidnaps/kills Justin? There really should be two separate anti-Michael catagories.

But why does one reader think this is "normal" Michael?  Since when has Michael been the type to take a swing an anyone ever?  No, this is true anti-Michael of the "monster" ilk.  But the fact that some readers can't tell the difference makes me wonder if there were two different versions of Queer as Folk being broadcast.

Author's Response:

I always struggle with writing Michael. I think he's probably my very least favorite character in the main cast. And I think he's completely irrational a good deal of the time. I liked him much better after he fell for Ben and was forced to grow up, but still didn't like him even at the end of the show. I really try not to turn him into a total monster. In this case I don't see him that way. I see him as someone who is pissed about Justin quitting Rage without even offering a reason as to why. Someone who disappeared leaving Debbie worried and Brian heartbroken. I think maybe Brian back slid a little after Justin broke up with him. And Michael blames all of that on Justin, just like he does the entire series practically. I don't really consider it a true anti-michael story, more of a "the writer doesn't like him and thinks he would likely overreact and act like a prat" story. In my head he comes around later, and apologizes and acts much more accepting after he understands why Justin did what he did. I'd like to think he'd be there for both Brian and Justin once he understands what Justin's been going through, and be much more of the "Brian with cancer" michael we saw who was supportive and in my opinon much more grown up and likable. BUT I don't explore that in this particular story. This is about Justin and Brian. And if I did write a sequel I think I would fix the Michael situation. BUT since I didn't and it does come off a bit anti-michael, I figured I had to warn for it, so that the Michael lovers on the site wouldn't try and lynch me.

Love your compelling storyline.  You can feel Justin's pain from having to return, yet it's a while before we learn why.  I'm so thankful that Emmett is the first person he runs into and that it seems to take away Justin's fear.  The meeting with Brian was so true to form IMO.  Love Jen's reaction to the whole thing.  Also how in spite of everything the family sides with Justin over Michael's spiteful comments.  The shock and bravery of Justin telling them the truth was amazingly well written.  Ben's showing up at Brian's as a show of support was wonderful.  Best of all was Brian's acceptance that he loves Sunshine and that they will get through this together.

I really didn't get why you put an anti-Michael warning, that was just normal Michael.

I love anti-Michael stories and that is what drew me to your story, but I don't feel it deserved to have that as a category.

Okay writing (story) I was hoping for something big to happen caused by Michael. I felt let down.

Author's Response:

I put it as Anti-Michael because I wrote Michael as kind of being an immature bully and a right prat. If I hadn't I would probably have had Michael fans telling me I needed to warn for it. I'm sorry you felt let down.
