i love this plot and i would love to tackle it but i want to ask a question and i want to know if i'm correct about something else.    First thing would you be upset if i had michael's father be a person of color.   i think that would be the biggest shock of all if there was a big mix up with the paper and the novotny was a black man.   i mean names mean nothing if u think about it.    Also didn't deb get pregnant at sixteen or eighteen.   are you tell me deb is supposed to be 48 years old when that show starts.  i mean i don't know how old the actres is she could'grayed early so ya.   A black Novotny comes to town with kids of his own maybe a daughter but no wife.   i think maybe he could have feelings for Deb.  like could not remember the things before the war.   they'd be no Carl so maybe Deb would wanna start seeing him.   What do you think?

Author's Response: I have no problem with Michael's biological father being a person of color. The story is yours so it's up to you who Michael's father is if you want to go AU and not have Danny Devore (aka Divina Devore) be Michael's real father. Having memory problems, kids of his own and no wife are great ideas, too. That could stir up a lot of things! :) My initial thought with this plot was: 'What would everyone's reaction be to Charles Michael Novotny returning to Pittsburgh? How would Debbie explain her actions? What would he do when he finds out that a woman he never met claims to be his widow and the mother of his now adult son?' It's canon that Debbie admits to Danny Devore that she chose a young soldier (he was supposedly from Pittsburgh and had no living relatives) who was reported killed in Vietnam to be Michael's father and even went so far as to have her name legally changed to Novotny to keep up the ruse. (Personally, I always thought it was strange that everyone knew how she had struggled as a single mother raising Michael, but no one questioned the fact that she never received the benefits that should have been awarded to her as the widow of a soldier killed in action nor did Michael receive his Social Security benefits.) As to Debbie's age… Michael states in a season 5 episode that Debbie was 17 when she got pregnant with him; she was probably 18 when she gave birth. In season 1, Michael turned 30 around November of 2000 so, yes, that would make Debbie 48 at the beginning of the series. (Sharon Gless was actually 57 at the start of the series.) I hope you decide to write your story and I can't wait to see what you do with this plot! Deb
