amitié (friendship)

Brian slowly woke up to the sound of a ringing phone. Struggling to sit up, he reaches for his phone, only to miss and fall off the couch. “Shit…” he mumbles, trying again. After a second attempt, he manages to answer the phone “What?” “Hey,” Michael’s voice greeted him. It was a mix between sympathy and exaggerated politeness. “What do you want?” Brian asks, rubbing his face in his hands. Looking around the room, he notices a note on the table from Deb telling him she had to go to work and she’d call him later, along with huge bold letters saying “eat something for fuck’s sake!” He smiles softly, shaking his head and tossing the paper to the side. “I just wanted to see how my best friend was doing.” Michael replies in a chipper voice. Yawning, he slowly stands up, “I’m fine.” His loft was still in shambles since the break-in and he is in no mood to clean it up. “Have you eaten anything?” “Fuck, Mickey, you sound just like your mother.” Michael laughs, “Fuck you, Brian. I’m just asking if you want to go get a bite to eat for lunch. We can hang out and maybe later tonight we can go to Babylon.” Brian sighs. He wasn’t hungry and he didn’t feel like going out. “Brian?” Michael asks. “Come on, it’ll be good for you.” Frowning, he looks around at the mess around him once more. Maybe he did need to get out for awhile. “I’m not going to be much fun, Mickey,” Brian admits, wishing he hadn’t gone through his entire stash with Deb. “Trust me, Brian, you need this.” Michael persists. Sighing, he concedes, “Fine. But you’re driving because I plan to get wasted.”
