She’d spent a week in Africa in the village with her husband, helping him get on his feet and another week with him in a hotel located only four hours away. The hotel interlude was a combination honeymoon and isolation to make sure that Molly hadn’t contracted the virus. She was almost sorry that she hadn’t because when the week was up, she knew she had to return home without Tripp. He insisted that he wanted to complete the time working that he’d committed himself to, making up for the time he’d been ill. There was nothing Molly wouldn’t do for her husband, and if this is what he wanted then she wasn’t going to stand in his way. Her mother and Justin had been waiting when she stepped off the plane in Hawaii. Apparently, Tripp had made a few phone calls after he’d put her on a plane to return to Hawaii. Neither one had been angry with her, but the disappointment that shown in their eyes was enough to make her depressed and unhappy. Or maybe it was her raging hormones. Either way, Molly had retreated to her bedroom with no intention of coming out unless it was absolutely necessary. She’d been in bed for a week now. Her mother was becoming more and more upset each time she approached the door. Justin was quiet though, Molly figured he understood. He prepared food for her, interesting sandwiches, icy cold milkshakes, fresh fruit and juices. He left it all on the patio outside her bedroom door, with a soft knock announcing that he’d been there, before he disappeared through the bushes. To: BAKinney@kinnetik.com From: JT-zeeartist@gmail.com Subject: Life’s a bitch Hey Clio, quickie email as usual – Molly still won’t come out of the damn bedroom. I’m still feeding her like she’s some kind of prisoner. Mom is still freaking and driving me nuts. Tell me again why I stayed here? The reason escapes me. Tell Gus I’ll be glad to continue our lessons when I get back to the Pitts. Talk to Preston, he’ll work something out for you and Gus. That bitch Mel has no right not to allow your son to get emails. It’s not like I’m some kind of child molester. I like my sex partners to be tall, dark, handsome and very well hung. If you know anyone like that would you give him my phone number please? I understand that phone sex is not bad. Giant Grizzly Bear Hugs Zee Artist – who is typing this with one hand while fantasizing about you Clio ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Justin hit send and sat back. Fuck, he missed Brian. He had decided it was time that he called Preston to ask for his help with Melanie’s attitude and Gus. Justin knew that his interference wasn’t really needed, but he liked to talk to his father[-] in[-]law. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Brian read his email and laughed out loud. Justin could always make him smile no matter what the subject. He checked the clock over his desk; he was in his not so secret room. Justin knew all about it and so did Gus. Though both his ‘men’ promised to keep the secret, forming an impromptu society Gus named Two Dads and a Kid or TDAK which for reasons known only to the six year old he found exceedingly funny. Justin didn’t have to worry, Brian had already had two meetings with the lawyer and one with his lawyer, Melanie and Lindsay. It looked like Gus was going to be officially in his custody part of the time. In return, he was giving Melanie partial custodial rights as well. As far as he was concerned it was a win, win situation. Now there was the small problem of getting Melanie to allow Gus to have the computer Brian had purchased for the boy. He had made sure that the Internet options were set with parental control. Hi son was a responsible for his age and he loved the fact that he could email Justin, his father and Molly. He loved that he could see them on the video camera when they chatted. Brian allowed him to use the computer on Gus’ own desk in the ‘secret’ room, but it would be better for the boy to have it at home. “Daddy, will the babies be born when we get there?” Gus asked. “I sure hope so and I bet Molly does too,” Brian said with a grin to Justin who rolled his eyes. “I wish Grandma Debbie could have come,” Gus sighed. “Why’d she and Grandpa Vic go to Italy now anyway?” “They like having a vacation, just like you do.” “Brian, we could go to Italy in the summer, maybe take Gus.” Justin looked eager. “I’ll think about it.” Brian closed his eyes. Something he did often when given the chance. Justin and Gus were both safely ensconced in their plane seats and he could relax. He thought back to the last few months and how much his life had changed. Gus was now firmly part of his life. He stayed with his father and Justin every other weekend and felt free to call any time he wanted. Brian had formally moved into Justin’s home and made it his but he and the blond kept the loft floor on Tremont as their get away. Having Debbie Novotny as his mom, combined with Michael, and the rest of the gang, a refuge for both of them was essential. Debbie and Vic had kept their promise to never reveal the location or even that the Fortress of Solitude existed. Brian sighed; he and Justin had some interesting weekends in the Fortress. Justin’s hand found his and Brian knew that his partner was reading his mind. He turned his head toward the younger man and opened his eyes. “I love you Cookie Boy,” he whispered. “I know.” Justin beamed up at him as he leaned his head on Brian’s arm. “I love you too, Clio.” The plane ride seemed to take forever. It was a long ten hours, but with Brian’s connections at Liberty Air, they had the best of everything, which certainly helped. Gus had slept the last four hours, so he was lively and ready to go when they landed. Brian had rented another convertible. It was Gus’ favourite kind of car and they all piled in to head to the hospital. Tripp called them as they pulled into the parking lot. They were now officially uncles of three identical baby girls, Meredeth Daphne, Melinda Judith and Misty Rose. Brian, Justin and Gus spent the week in Hawaii, buying everything they could think of for the girls in triplicate. The only way Molly could get them to stop was to agree to bring the girls back to Pittsburgh in a couple of months for a full out baby shower, thrown by Debbie. On the plane ride back to Pittsburgh, Justin lay snuggled close to Brian on one side, Gus lay snuggled on the other. It was a Brian sandwich. With his arms on the shoulders of both of his boys he lay back in his seat, eyes closed and listened, and felt the soft even breathing of the two people he loved more than any other in the world. It was then, on that long plane trip, that he realized he would do anything in his power to protect both of them. That epiphany came with the realization just what his birth mother had done. She didn’t abandon him in a church. She gave him a life in that church. From the reports he read, she saved him from something much, much worse. It wasn’t until now, seeing the new babies, watching Gus holding them, holding them himself, that he realized just how much Joan Kinney had loved him. The plane continued to Pittsburgh. Both Justin and Gus slept, knowing they were loved and protected. Brian slept, knowing the same thing for the first time in his life. The end January 7th, 2006
