Later that night, after Molly had went to bed, Justin and Jennifer sat down at the kitchen table. "Mom, what did the attorney say?"
Jennifer stayed silent for a few minutes. She didn't want to burden her son, but she and Justin didn't keep secrets. Since his father had died, they had depended on each other. He was he man of the house, until she had made the mistake of marrying Harley.
Jennifer sighed. "Marla and David inherited the house. Haley never changed his will. They get everything that was his. They want us out of here immediatly. Or, they'll call the police."
"Shit!" Justin cursed. "Those good for nothin'...," Justin started.
Jennifer nodded. She couldn't agree more. "Look, I don't want you to worry. I'll figure something out." After a pause, she added, "We may have to go to a shelter fo a little while. Until I can get some money saved up for a place."
Justin nodded. Harley had never let his mother keep any money for herself. If he caught her with any, he would smack her around. "I've got a couple of hundred dollars that I managed to put away when Harley wasn't looking," he said.
Jennifer gave him a slight smile. "Thanks, sweetie." She stood up, looking at her watch. It was ten at night. "I'm going to call around and see if any place is open. The sooner we get out of here, the better."
Justin just nodded as he watched his mother walk out of the kitchen. He hadn't even thought about whether or not that bastard had changed the will. Now, they were in a spot. But he knew that something would work out eventually.
Jennifer, Molly, and Justin had each packed a suitcase of belongings. They included clothes, pictures, personal items, a couple of books, and Justin's sketchbooks. Jennifer had gotten ahold of a woman at the local YMCA, who had informed Jennifer that they were full. And, the other two local shelters were also full. But there was a shelter a couple of miles outside of Pittsburgh that had a couple of spots open.
The shelter housed a few abused women and children, but mostly housed young homosexuals with no place else to go. Jennifer had told the woman that she didn't mind, seeing as her oldest child was gay. The woman had given he directions, then informed her that she would get ahold of Debbie Novotny, who owned the shelter, and let her know that Jennifer would be arriving with her two children.
Anything that they couldn't take with them, that hadn't belonged to Harley, Jennifer and Justin had broken and thown in the trash. They were't going to let David and Marla get their hands on anything more than they had to.
When Jennifer, Justin, and Molly were in the car and buckled up, Jennifer asked, "You guys ready?"
"Yeah," Molly said. Jennifer's heart broke at the sadness in her daughter's voice.
Justin gave his mother a reassurig smiled. "We're all set, Mom."
Jennifer nodded and started the car. Within a few minutes, they were on the highway heading out of Pittsburgh.
