I loved the story and added it to my favorites. The ending allowed me the choice of having Justin bashed or enjoying his future with Brian and Luke and the rest of his Liberty Avenue family.

Reviewer: nickknack (Signed) · Date: March 07, 2016 02:52 AM · On: epilogue - end

I really liked this story but the abrupt ending has left far too many things unresolved for me to have that satisfied feeling. There just seems to be so much that should still be told.

Reviewer: Missy (Anonymous) · Date: October 28, 2014 04:26 AM · On: push

I'm mad at myself for reading this story. The ending is depressing and basically a cop out for those who invested their time and read this. Also, that idiotic BS that you give anyone who complains about the ending, "everyone is where they should be" and for the most part happy. Really...If the ending is what most of us think it was, how exactly are Justin, Brian, and Luke happy? Since you've changed most things are we to now believe Justin doesn't survive Chris vicious attack, and poor Luke now has lost his mother, grandfather, and now father. Also, Brian has to live with the guilt of the attack on Justin and with Luke losing his father. Oh, that's right, we're suppose to make up are own ending. Just makes me angry that I actually took the time to read this!

I am so glad I found this on here, as I'm currently following it on fanfiction.net and it's so frustrating waiting for you to post the next chapter, as I am totally hooked.

Author's Response:

Lol. Yeah, I love it when stories that I'm following are fully posted on other websites. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

This seems like a wonderful choice for the Month of May. Looks like I have some good reading to do. I don't know how I missed this story. I can tell by just the first chapter that it's going to be wonderful. Your style of writing is detailed and flows well.

I absolutly love your story! And the end, even though it feels like there are more challenges for Justin, I feel like it was a perfect ending! I would love for a sequel but it would ruin the ending of this one :) Congratulations and I can't wait for a new story and ideas from you!

I usually don't review unless a story is exceptional & I have to say...yours is!!! I love the way you keep the characters 'in character' and the fact that you can spell, punctuate, and demonstrate the correct usage of words & tenses (unlike too many authors).

I just want to encourage you to keep writing for this fandom (as it is the only thing I read these days)!

Thanks for this story!!!

Author's Response:

Weird--I definitely posted the ending on LJ, and I posted notices to various QaF comms... Oh well, I suppose you read it here anyway!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the story, and especially the ending. It's been getting mixed reviews. *g*

Thanks so much for reading, and for commenting every step of the way!

Brian is clearly smitten with Luke. Justin's persisitence paid off.

Author's Response:

Indeed! Justin is a persistent little bugger, isn't he?

I loved this story except for the end it feels like a cliffhanger and i hate them. This just feels unfinished to me,,,,,,,,,

Author's Response:

I have a thing for messy, unfinished endings--and this one makes a point extrodinarily well, about life and happiness and such. This fic is as finished as it's ever going to be.

However, you being the reader, you can always just stop reading at chapter seventeen and forget the epiogue exists! More power to you. *g*

Reviewer: Megan Rose (Signed) · Date: August 21, 2011 03:08 AM · On: epilogue - end

Oh God. That just kills me. Poor Justin, after all the shit he's dealt with, to have his one truly happy moment ruined in a matter of seconds. This is just heartbreaking. But good. So very, very good. Well done on a great story.

Author's Response:

You don't know that, though! So much has changed that we don't really know whether or not Hobbs is there with his bat.

Either way, though, it does make for a dramatic ending, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading, and for taking the time to leave a review!

Reviewer: Kemma (Signed) · Date: August 21, 2011 02:01 AM · On: epilogue - end

I don't know if I like this ending or not, but I do think it's pretty brilliant either way.  That probably doesn't make sense -- what I mean is, that as a reader I can see this ending as positive (where Brian is shouting to Justin to tell him he loves him or something, which for this particular story is something I'd want) or negative (where canon takes over and Justin is, indeed, bashed, which for this particular story I wouldn't want).  Since you integrated both AU and canon elements into your story throughout, this makes it even tougher to figure out how the ending should be interpreted.  But, that's the brilliance of it -- each reader can construct their own ending (if they need a happy ending it can happen; if they love sad endings that could happen too).  I love stories that don't have neat conclusions wrapped in a shiny, red bow and you definitely delivered that in a unique way.

I know you said you aren't writing a sequel, but just know that if you did ever toy with that idea, I'd definitely read it!  I'd love to see what happens 10 years from now when Luke is 10 or 11 and how he's interacting with Justin and Brian and even Gus who would be around his age.

Thanks for a great story!  I really have enjoyed reading it and it was a nice way to end my summer since I head back to school on Monday to teach.  Good luck with any future writing, even if it isn't in the QAF fandom! :)

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for your appreciation of the ending--it's a hard thing to swallow, but it really makes my point very well. Things can be beautiful or terrifying in your very next breath and you just don't know because life isn't something that can be fixed or solved or overcome. I also, as you said, despise endings where everything's wrapped in a neat little package, with the illusion that everything will be all right from here on out.

Ten years down the road? Justin ends up going into website design, freelancing and occasionally teaming up with Brian, and Brian tends to spend the night over Justin's place a lot. Luke is absolute trouble, full of creativity and adventure and an air of natural leadership and has Gus following him around everywhere. I, er, might have some stories written about it--whether they get poster remains to be seen, though.

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful, detailed reviews. I have enjoyed reading every single word you've written, and I appreciate the thought and time that went into each one more than I can say. I huge, huge thank you to you!

Reviewer: DavidR (Signed) · Date: August 21, 2011 12:31 AM · On: epilogue - end

Thanks for the story.  We sure took a long trip. From Justin with a

kid, and being an unwanted prisoner in his parent’s house, to

what looks like a pretty good future.

As far as the ending, I finished it with a happy ending.  Why not?

Again, thanks for the story, I enjoyed it.

love how his ended.  everyone has his own ending,  canon was awful, but there in lies the story's angst.  this ending can be much happier.  thanx!! hope you write more stories.  really love your style.

Author's Response:

Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed the ending--unsurprisingly, it seems that very few did.

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment. Feedback is always, always a pleasure!

Hey!

Thanks for the wonderful ride, sweetie.  You always have their voices down to a tee.   I must say, I kind of both love and hate your ending.  Each reader can leave it up to their own imagination as to how they want to end it:  The tradtional canon way or not.  You always craft such wonderful stories, and, unlike one commenter, I will be reading.  :-)))

Here' hoping another bunny pops into your brain and you  share it with us all.

Later!

xoxo

Author's Response:

I'm glad to hear I haven't alienated my entire following! *g*

It is a cruel ending, but it also makes my point fairly well. There's no way I could have ended this story in a way that left everything resolved and happy and neat--it goes entirely against my reasons for writing this in the first place. And of course, you're free to imagine that Brian was calling Justin's name for whatever reason you want!

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to leave so much feedback. Writing this was a pleasure, but it's readers like you that really make it worth it.

Reviewer: judi (Anonymous) · Date: August 20, 2011 10:42 PM · On: epilogue - end

Hi,

I have been reading this story and enjoying it.  As the story belongs to you, you have a right to handle it any way you choose.  But I don't think I'll be reading any more of your stories as this is not why I read BJ fiction.  Each to his own, as they say.

Judi

Author's Response:

Hi Judi,

I'm sorry you feel that way. I know that a lot of people enjoy fanfiction with happy endings that make it seem like life can be overcome, but unfortunately, that was never the goal of this story. But a you say, to each his own. There are many, many other stories out there for you to enjoy, and I hope you do!

Reviewer: Bigdogz09 (Signed) · Date: August 20, 2011 10:18 PM · On: epilogue - end

Oh, tough ending and no sequel... you're mean.  LOL.  This was such a unique, enjoyable AU.  I was addicted and riveted, impatiently waiting for each update.  So glad you shared it with us.

All the best.

Laura

Author's Response:

Yep, but it was an ending that made a point--and fairly well, at that. I'm glad that you enjoyed the journey here! It's been a lot of fun along the way, and I've enjoyed reading all of your comments and feedback. Cheers to you, Laura!

This story is unfolding very nicely.  I like it.

Hopefully PIFA is still on Justin’s radar.  Ok, just not now,

but maybe Brian can convince Justin that it is really best for

Luke that Justin be the very best he can be.  In my opinion, that

means PIFA.

Thanks for the story.  Things are looking up.  So far …

David R.

Author's Response:

Case in point, why I am terrible at endings. *headdest*

This is sort of the last chapter. There's an epilogue coming your way on Saturday, but this is pretty much it for the characters. There will be no PIFA for Justin, sadly. Everyone's exactly where they're meant to be, and mostly happy, and I called it a good point to close on. Sorry about that...

this story just gets better and better.  i just crave more chapters.  the dynamics between the two is wonderful.  keep the chapters coming.

Author's Response:

Heh. That was actually the last chapter--all that remains is the epilogue, which will be posted on Saturday. Sorry...

Reviewer: Bigdogz09 (Signed) · Date: August 18, 2011 03:42 AM · On: impact

Very intense, good chapter.  Love that Brian is opening up to Luke.  So sad that this fic is coming to an end, it's been so enjoyable to read.  Love all the characterizations, plot, and relationships.  Sequel maybe?

Author's Response:

Thank you! This chapter is really... "deliverance". Everyone is where they're supposed to be, and everything's just good, you know? It was a blast to write.

No chance of a sequel, unfortunately. But you do get an epilogue, on Saturday!

Reviewer: Kemma (Signed) · Date: August 14, 2011 09:46 AM · On: eyes shut

Another great chapter -- particularly loved your description of Luke pooping and Brian's reaction to it -- made me laugh out loud.  And I LOVE that Brian stepped up and changed Luke's diaper!  Can't wait to see what happens next!

Author's Response:

Thanks! Babies pooping is an excellent thing--they get all red and grunty. Lol.

Sorry it took me so long to respond--RL is a bit crazy right now. New chapter in a few hours!

want to know what i think about this chapter? ain't going to happen. yes i realize the amount of time it takes to write your stories but it takes me time to read them, review them. since it seems my reviews aren't worth a response i won't be putting anymore time into wasting my time reading. i know i'm just a measly reader, but isn't it us readers that help give you someone to write for?

Ooh...this chapter was intense. Maybe too intense. I hate chris hobbs. It hurts me when someone hurts justin -- come on, how could anyone hurt him... This is one great story, waiting for the next installment.

Author's Response:

It was a very intense chapter, yes, especially in the scene with Hobbs. The next chapter is a bit calmer, though.

Next part will be up on Saturday!

Bugger i was so invested in the story and then the dam chapter stopped there! Wow Justin swinging every which way on how to do the right thing for Luke and Brian. I really enjoyed that chapter

Author's Response:

Sorry about that... But it had to end somewhere!

It was definitely an intense chapter. Hopefully, a lot of the craziness of this chapter will be resolved in the next one.

that fucker hobbs came to some good after all. i still would report him to the police, michael was a witness. the bruises came in handy for kip but now brian thinks that justin had something to do with it. michael can testify that it happened to justin in the parking lot and brian will never know about kip. oh justin, what a web of secrets he's weaving.

Update soon!

Author's Response:

Lol. I'm posting this at three different sites, but I think you're one of the only people reading this on all three of them. Usually, I update LJ first, then this one, and then AO3.

Only three chapters left--I can scarcely believe it!

This is so engrossing, my friend.:)  I like how you used parts of the show and incorporated them differently into your story.  And congrats, BTW, on the blue ribbon - richly deserved!  For someone who was initially nervous about posting your story here, that is indeed quite an accomplishment and well justified.:)  Thanks for sharing this story with us - I believe I saw on LJ where you maybe have 3 more chapters to go?  I'll be looking forward to the rest of this well-constructed story!:) ~Kimberly

Author's Response:

I'm still grinning madly whenever I catch sight of that blue ribbon. It's perfectly lovely.

There are indeed three more installments--two full-length chapters and a shorter epilogue. I can hardly believe that my time with this story is ending so soon. It feels like just yesterday I was mapping it out in my writing notebook... Wow.

Anyway. Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to leave feedback. I hope you continue to enjoy the story, up until the very last word!

i can honestly say that this is the best story i have read so far in qaf fanfic... really great writing you have... this chapter was amazing, just the way justin thought of everything... and that last line! love it... i absolutely cannot wait for the next chapter!!

Author's Response:

Wow--that's quite an honor. Thank you!

I love hearing your thoughts. Feedback is the best thing ever!

Reviewer: Kemma (Signed) · Date: August 08, 2011 02:52 AM · On: impending

Congratulations on the blue ribbon - this story is definitely deserving!  Another great chapter -- I like how you're integrating events from the canon into your AU, yet putting a new spin on them. I'm really curious how Justin will deal with the Kip situation, because I just don't see him sitting on the sidelines, baby or not.  He's too smart not to figure out a way to help that won't put him, or Luke, in danger.  And this, I think, is my favorite line of your story so far: More importantly, what must it feel like to be sued by someone with a dog's name?  LOL -- I totally agree with Justin there -- it does sound like a dog's name. Can't wait for the next chapter -- I know you're still working on this story, but are you planning on writing more QAF fanfic after this? Just curious! :)

Author's Response:

Thanks! I was super excited to receive it.

This story doesn't stick especially close to canon, but a lot of the major events still happen, such as Kip--who is definitely presenting a problem. I won't make any promises, but I will say that I'm sure Justin won't be disentangling himself from the situation so easily. He's got a bit of a Saving People Thing. *g*

This is my last big work in QaF. I have a thief!Justin/FBI!Brian AU that I'm wrapping up today that should be posted some time this week, but I really don't forsee me doing a lot more in this fandom. Sorry...

justin can't find the time to be with brian because of luke, how is he going to go after kip? brian's trying to help but still thinking of himself but justin is handling him just right. i'm sure if justin could get a word in edgewise and talked to brian everything could be straightened out.

as for mel and linds, still wouldn't babysit for them, as an after thought mel said it was ok for him to bring luke. like she would leave her own kid to babysit another?

i still don't understand why justin isn't living in cal's home that is now his? wonder what jennifer wanted besides to tell him to come home.

Author's Response:

I'm not sure that talking to Brian has ever been the solution to anything. I mean, the guy's all about actions, not words, and he doesn't lend trust immediately to anything. As for Mel and Linds... eh. I think a lot of it is Justin reading things that aren't there. He's a bit defensive about his situation.

Justin's not living in Cal's home because he's happy with Deb. If he were living in Cal's home, he'd lose (a) his free, round-the-clock babysitter, Vic and (b) home-cooked dinners from Deb. He'd also have to pay for utilities on the house, and if he kept the house he'd have to pay taxes and the mortgage, and given that Cal was about as well-off as Justin's parents were... All in all, it's definitely better for him to be staying with Deb.

Anyway. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

I love this story so far! It´s amazing how you build the characters. And I really can picture Justin and Luke, living at Debbie´s and having a hard time with everything but coming out stronger avery time.

Good chapter.  Glad Justin didn't try to mess with Kip with baby on board.  Enjoying this fic.

Author's Response:

Thanks! Justin was definitely making the right choice in that last scene, but if he continues to stay out of the Kip situation... remains to be seen.

Thanks for reading!

I'm not sure that I mentioned how much I love this story. I would not review if I didn't.

I did go back and read any chapters I may have missed. I noted in chapter 9(?) that Justin thought Brian was being a prick as a defense mechanism. I often forget that Justin is usually portrayed as the most mature in the bunch and that may very well be true. He seems to get the overall picture everyone one else is missing. And it is clear how much he loves his son, but it does not mean he can't love Brian as well.

I look forward to more of this story!

Author's Response:

Thank you! I love to hear that.

Justin is the most inexperienced of the group, in S1, but he's definitely one of the more mature ones. I think Randy once called him "a man in a boy's body". But he's struggling to find a balance between Luke and Brian, and Kip definitely isn't going to help with that.

I hope you continue reading! We haven't much left, now.

"My son was alone, save for me. And it only made me angrier that I had no one to turn to with that anger. With anything. I was truly, completely alone in the world.

"There was no one in the world supporting me right now, and there was no one in the world who was going to catch me if I fell.

"So what choice did I have but to move forward?"

Depressing!

This was a very good chapter! Justin is dealing with a lot of problems that most adult would not be able to handle.

Author's Response:

Yeah, Justin's in a pretty bad situation, but he's dealing with it well. He's a strong kid.

Thanks for reading!

"I can't," I said, though it killed me to say so. "I have final exams tomorrow, and I can't just leave Luke alone."

"Whatever, trouble Brian was in, I had to think about Luke. Luke had to come first."

Finally!

Both Mikey and Brian are total pricks so far. They deserve each other. There must be  some redeeming quality of Brian that am missing.

Author's Response:

Brian has redeeming qualities, certainly, but they weren't exactly bursting through like rays of sunshine during S1. I tried to keep him as IC as possible, and that definitely means him not turning into a romantic fop overnight.

Thanks for reading!

"I sighed, knowing it was the best that I was going to get out of him. Then I followed him downstairs, gave him a very intense kiss goodbye (which Vic appreciated a little too vocally), and then tried and failed to convince him to kiss Luke good bye, too."

Nobody seems to like Luke.

This was a very intense chapter. Justin is so pathetic in his need for Brian, yet he has all the other more important stuff hanging over his head. He is very naive.

I just curious on who he is going to choose as a guardian over the inheritance.

dress up baby go to babylon and dance--brian will get a whole different picture of you.  fix brian's mess with kip and that will solidify things.  good chapter.  i know you don't answer reviews til the end of your stories.  you are going to have a hell lot of answering as you have quite a few reviews.  so someone is reading and reviewing!!!

Author's Response:

I do try to reply to reviews while I'm posting the story, it's just that RL is a quite hectic right now, and occassionally I miss people. I'm sorry if you were one of them!

I don't want to say anything about what happens to Kip, but I can promise that Justin's part in it all isn't over yet! Thanks for reading!

Just wanted you to know that I am enjoying your story.  You have done a great job of presenting the boys in an intriguing light and I love the way you have portrayed Justin's son - I can almost feel like I'm sitting there while he's gurgling, trying to learn to walk and talk, being fussy when he's 'dangled,' etc.  I like how protective Justin is toward his son - I can see him being that way and I feel it's very true to his character traits.  And I can see the boys slowly becoming more and more connected to each other emotionally.

Oh, and for what's it worth, I have no authority or say-so whatsoever in the matter, but I echo the other reviewer - I, too, feel it's worth a blue ribbon in my opinion and I told the administrators that as well.  Again, it's not up to me, but this story is well constructed and interesting, and you've been updating it quickly, which I appreciate very much.  I know how much those little symbols mean to me (and you're right, I never know, either, when they're going to pop up but I love it when they do!), so I hope they will consider this one for that honor.  Thanks for sharing this story with us.:)

Kimberly

Author's Response:

Sorry for the delay in response, RL is a bit crazy right now...

I'm really, really pleased to hear that you're enjoying it. I tried to breathe a little more life into the teenage-parent!Justin cliche, and I'm glad that it's working for you. I also have a strng dislike of AUs where Brian and Justin just fall in love overnight, because one of my favorite things about thier relationship is the clash. Ooo, how I love the clash.

Re blue ribbons (I actually got a note from an admin about this, a few posts down), what I meant by arbitrary was that there's no formal, or even explained, way of how they are awarded. It just seems to be based on whatever the admins like. Which they totaly reserve the right to do, it's their site, but... you know... an FAQ question explaining that wouldn't go amiss. Once again, great chapter!  I love to hate Michael (though I can appreciate it when he's written as an ally of Justin's from time to time) and I really, really don't like him in this story!  I can't believe how he keeps insinuating that his mother's house is HIS house -- he's cwazy!  After this chapter, I have no idea how you're going to play out Brian and Michael's relationship -- before I read this, I was rooting for Justin to get those two back together, but now I'm not so sure.  Hmmm....  I know other reviewers have said Justin's really immature, but I think he's probably the most mature out of all of them -- he's just got a lot to deal with, plus he still is, technically, just a kid.  I can't imagine having a kid at his age or having to deal with half of the things he has to deal with, all while he's still a teenager!  And, btw, I adore Luke -- you've done a great job of writing about him and characterizing him as Justin's son.  Looking forward to the next chapter!

Author's Response:

Thank you! Michael isn't completely evil--he's got a good heart, he just usually lets his vindictiveness overshadow it. I won't say what happens in later chapters, but... Michael tends to come through when people are in need.

Justin is certainly dealing with a lot. He's very mature for his age, perhaps a bit more so than he was in canon, but he also has a lot to learn. You can only be so mature before you really need experience to carry you the rest of the way. This whole story is about the growth of that maturity, and the maturing of his relationships.

I love that you love Luke! Babies are so often ridiculously boring and I tried hard to give Luke a personality. After all, anyone who's every babysat knows that all babies have personalities!

Every new chapter takes a new turn....really entertaining.

Hopes that this fic. get nominated for a blue ribbon. Excellent writing with an  incredible story unraveling itself.

Author's Response:

Thank you! As far as I can tell, blue ribbons seem to be handed out a bit arbitrarily, but I certainly wouldn't say no to one!

I can assure you that featured status is not arbitrarily given. It's based on writing talent, reader response, entertainment value, grammar, spelling, and emotional impact. Usually it also requires that a story be completed.-ADMIN

thank you for helping justin and luke out with cal's will. that will help alot. did justin even realize that he has the house to live in?

what a whiny child michael is. petty and jealous.

vic is heavenly.

brian's getting better, you can see the beginning of his protective side coming out.

chris is trouble.

Author's Response:

You're welcome! Though things certainly haven't settled yet--Justin still has to find a guardian for Luke's inheritance. I don't think he'll keep the house, though. Even if it's been paid off, he'd still have to pay taxes on it, which can be very hefty, especially if Cal lives in the same kind of neighborhood that Justin's family did. Plus, you know, utilities and stuff.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

i don't know, not liking brian right now., and michael i never cared for he is the biggest shmuck ever imagined. giving permission for justin to use his room whenn he doesn't live there any longer. what an ass.

brian would buy him breakfast only if justin would blow him afterwards? he seems to be taking lessons from michael.

jennifer is fighting a losing battle unless she stands up to craig, and that's not going to happen any time soon.

don't like justin bargining for brian to be with him. i guess i didn't find anything to like about this chapter. will keep reading though and hope it turns out well for justin and luke.

Reviewer: Megan Rose (Signed) · Date: August 01, 2011 03:05 AM · On: velocity

God, poor Justin. He's trying so hard, but I don't think he has a clue what he's doing. He is so mixed up right now, and no one seems to be helping him. They're either picking on him, enabling him, taking advantage of him, but no one seems to be giving it to him straight about how hard his future is going to be now. And he's not doing himself any favours by acting like a brat, even if he is a kid.

But if Luke is Cal's only remaining heir, does that not mean Luke is going to come into some money now?

love the one word headings for your chapters.  good chapter. somethings got to give soon between them besides the sex.

Author's Response:

Thanks! There's one heading in the future that's two words, but overall, it's telling a story one word at a time and I really like it.

Brian and Justin are, in some ways, closer than they were at this point in canon, and in other ways, more distant. We'll just have to wait and see where they take it from here!

Reviewer: bksbracelet (Anonymous) · Date: July 28, 2011 05:34 PM · On: terminal

OMG what a wonderful chapter I was so worried that Cal would try and take Luke away, but I did love Justins father/protector instinct kicking in.

Author's Response:

Thank you! Justin's a bit overprotective of Luke at this point, but it was definitely fun to play with those feelings. Poor Justin, all cute and fatherly...

Reviewer: koalared (Anonymous) · Date: July 28, 2011 09:37 AM · On: terminal

This story continues to be amazing.

Cal could have at least given the house to Justin and Luke.

Author's Response:

Thank you! Cal isn't really thinking of anyone but himself at this point--I think that his intentions might have been to give Justin some of the money from the house, but... Apparently the grief was too much.

Reviewer: linda (Anonymous) · Date: July 28, 2011 09:04 AM · On: terminal

omg what an ending.  good chapter.  brian still brian with justin.  something hopefully will turn him into something other than a sex machine.  i know that's what he purports himself to be, but he can be and is more. interested to see where this goes.

Author's Response:

Thanks! Brian and Justin's relationship is definitely slow-going, possibly even slower than in canon, so for now we'll just have to live with the little moments between them. Don't bank on Brian suddenly waking up oen day and realizing that Justin is his One True Love. *g*

Perhaps Cal's suicide will push Brian into a little hurt/comfort though, yeah?

Reviewer: sophie's mom (Anonymous) · Date: July 28, 2011 04:57 AM · On: terminal

intense chapter.

justin has very right to be angry and wary of cal's return. i have a feeling that justin is going to be receiving more from cal than 300 dollars. maybe money for luke's day care, money for school all from the sale of the house. that would be a great thing for cal to do for his grandson, making sure luke was taken care of any way justin can.

not liking brian or the girls too much. brian's out for himself and the girls are being two-faced. if i were justin i would have asked mel why she'd want him to babysit and take care of gus when she and lindsay don't think he's even capable of taking care of his own son. i wouldn't have done it. let brian babysit his son on a friday night. other than that it was a great chapter.

Author's Response:

Justin certainly does have the right to be upset with Cal, and he also has the right to keep Luke away from him. Not that that becomes an issue, but it still stands. Interesting thought about the money... We'll see.

As for Brian and the girls, I wouldn' be too harsh on them. Remember that we're reading this through Justin's eyes, and right now he has serious trust issues with adults. He's very defensive about his situation and is looking for any excuse to shove all adults out of his life. It becomes a bit more prominent in coming chapters.

Thanks for reading!

And even though this is an AU, your characterizations are spot on. Can't wait to see what happens between Brian and Justin next -- keep writing! :)

Still not liking Brian.

"What did I have to go downstairs to? Michael, who hated me. Melanie and Lindsay, who thought that I was a total jerk-off. David, who felt bad for me. I'd dealt with it all evening, and I was fucking tired."

He should have skipped the dinner altogether. An adult knows when to say no.

Reviewer: nosleep (Anonymous) · Date: July 27, 2011 11:32 PM · On: terminal

"He was as good as ignoring Luke, but he wasn't angry with me, and he certainly didn't judge me for my failed attempt at striking out on my own."

This is the reason Justin should not be with Brian and is too immature to raise a child. He is letting everyone, mostly Brian, push him around. And Melanie is right. Brian should not be around his kid.

Author's Response:

I think that while Brian probably shouldn't RAISE a child, being around them certainly won't hurt anything. He's not a bad guy. Plus, I mean, I think Brian's just struggling to deal with the fact that he kind of more than tolerates Justin--the baby bit is too much for him at this point.

Have faith. This story, much like QaF itself, is about boys becoming men.

God, this whole story just breaks my heart for Justin. The poor kid, and yes, he is still a kid even with a kid of his own. And he just can't seem to get a break, but I'm glad he and Luke are at least safe at Deb's so he can figure out what to do next. I'm so disappointed in Jennifer. I hope she realizes what mistakes she's making.

Author's Response:

Justin is absolutely still a kid in this story. He may be very mature for his age, but he's still so young and inexperienced. I think he'll be all right at Debbie's, though. It's a good, strong place for him to be. As for Jennifer... well, she may not be the best mother right now, but I don't think she's going to give up very easily. She's quite passive-aggressively stubborn.

Nice chapter.  The real question is:  does Luke think ‘Da’

is Justin or is ‘Da’ his Hippo.  ( Ok ok, just kidding)

I am happy that Justin is finally getting the help he

needs.  Slowly but surely he is getting the support

group he needs – thanks to Brian.

Justin has been acting like a kid; then again, that is just

what he is.  I do think that Justin does see it as it is, he

really can’t go home again.  There were several hints to

that – when Jennifer only looked at Justin but seems to

ignore Luke.  I find that very strange.  I haven’t seen in this story where she accepts Luke as someone very

special, her Grandson.  As for Craig?  Whatever…..

Thanks for this terrific chapter, this story is just getting

more and more interesting and is fun to read.

DavidR

Author's Response:

Lol. It could very well be the hippo that Luke was referring to! Wouldn't Justin be embarrassed?

Justin is indeed not going home again. He knows it, and he's trying to let his mother know it. Jennifer definitely doesn't seem very attached to Luke, but that may change over time...

What is in the right side of the banner of this story? I cannot make it out.

Reviewer: nosleep (Anonymous) · Date: July 21, 2011 10:57 AM · On: twist

I forgot about Debbie being a teenage mother. Good move!

Brian is a total dick in this even if he provided a solution to the problem.

The ending is so cute.

Author's Response:

Debbie being a young mother herself is a nice tie-in that I've neve seen anyone else bring up in a kidfic before. Brian, though... Eh. I think he's just being his usual cranky self. You know how he likes to be a huge asshole to compensate for doing something nice.

In answer to your question about the banner, the thing on the right side of the banner is a person in the process of throwing themselves off of a cliff. Sorry that was unclear!

I love the Luke and Justin scenes!  Just adorable.  What's up with Craig, he's too quiet.  I don't trust that.

This is really just so good and meaty, I'm so glad when I see an update.  You really can't update it fast enought for me.

Great chapter!

Author's Response:

Eh... I think Craig is pretty much out of the picture for now. Just like in canon, he's pretty much done associating with Justin, and Justin feels the same way. Justin's relationship with Jennifer is a lot more strained than it was in canon, though, so it should be interesting to see how he handles her.

"Meaty"? Wow. That's the first time anyone's ever used that in a review!

Glad to hear you're still hanging in there. Boy. I can't believe we're halfway through!

Author's Response:

I'm happy to hear it! This story wasn't too difficult to write, but it was this middle section that was the hardest for me. Characterizations were tricky. I had a lot of fun writing the little Justin/Luke moments, though.

Brian and Justin are both ridiculously stubborn, aren't they? But Justin's a bit unstable right now, so I think that Brian might win in the end.

This is a great story! Waiting for continuation. And...I totally disagree with Justin's parents and some reviewers that it is in the baby's best interest to give him up for adoption. No way, it should be done only where there is no other option. I do not think that the situation as it is warrants this; a child always wants to be with their parents and Justin seems to be prepared to do his best.

Author's Response:

Thank you! I'm personally a huge proponent of adoption, having seen what happens first-hand to children who are raised by people who are not old enough/mature enough to be parents, but Justin would most certainly agree with you. It would take something pretty extreme to make him put Luke up for adoption (and no worries, that's not going to happen).

Thanks for this terrific chapter.  Lots and lots of action, and a

wonderful description (writing)  of emotion.

We get to see the other side of Brian.  The one who holds out his

hand to help others, to protect others, a person who really cares.  He

doesn’t show that side of himself often, but we know it is there.  Justin

needs helps ‘big time’ and it is long passed time that others find out

who could help him.

Thanks again for the chapter, it was terrific.

"Funny," Brian said, after a long moment of silence. "I thought you were saying 'fuck me' over there on the sofa, not 'help me find a place for my kid and I to live'."

Justin is not mature enough to be a father. I may have to agree with his parents.

Good chapter!

Author's Response:

Justin... is learning. The whole escapade with Brian was a huge mistake, and he kind of knows that by the end of this chapter, but won't be able to fully process his mistake until things settle down a bit. Justins parents do have a point, in that Justin isn't equipped for parenthood, and they have an extremely valid point about adoption. One of the major themes of this story is Justin learning how to be a father, and showing the gradual evolution of his parenting.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the chapter, and I hope that you continue to read the story!

Reviewer: JustBeAQueen (Signed) · Date: July 10, 2011 02:50 AM · On: crumble

WOW! I look forward to seeing more of this. So far it's been interesting, but wasn't sure if anything would happen like that between Justin and his dad... Very powerful and emotional. I know Debbie would totally take Justin in, even with Luke... but at the moment he wouldn't be thinking about that, nor is he thinking calmly enough to think rationally. Not that I blame him, no 17 year old should be dealing with all of that, but it happens... and I'll be very curious to see where it goes and, I'm still waiting to see the whole Justin/Luke/Brian dynamic thing will work. Cause even though life would go on as it did in the show, Justin with a baby will change all of that. I don't even want to think of prom... I mean if Justin got hurt (whether Brian was there or not - cause I honestly think that wouldn't matter - Hobbes had a baseball bat at a prom)... Craig could use that time to make sure Luke got adopted, I don't know how, as Justin is the father, and if it's listed as such on the birth certificate then the legal system might not be able to do anything without the fathers permission, as Justin would be 18 and therefore legal and his father wouldn't have a say over Justin's child. But... anyway, I don't want to think about that... but I am definitely anxiously awaiting the next chapter in this story. It's funny, I've read a lot of fanfiction and I think I can honestly say that I've never read a story quite like this. It's definitely one of a kind. I mean I've read where Daphne gets pregnant, but I don't see that as believable, not after how careful they were. But this version makes sense... I like it.

Author's Response:

It's really all been building to that confrontation--and now that everything's out in the open, I think Justin's just about done with his parents. His next move remains to be seen, but i promise you it doesn't involve lying around waiting for someone to rescue him. He's always been a proactive little shit.

Luke does change a lot of things, though I don't stray ridiculously far from canon. As for prom... Well, this story only covers until Christmas, but I can tell you that the situation with Craig, and any questions about who Luke's legal guardian is, will be all resolved by then. Legally speaking, the next-of-kin would get rights to Luke if Justin was in a coma (though they couldn't put him up for adoption in the three days that Justin was out), but a living will/power of attorney paperwork would allow Justin to choose who gets custody of Luke. But, again, I'm only covering until Christmas.

I tried my best to make the plot a bit less contrived than these kinds of stories usually are. It's not the most original thing ever, but I like to think that I put my own spin on it.

Thank you so much for the wonderfully long and thorough feedback--I absolutely loved reading your comment. Be sure to check out the next chapter, going up on Wednesday!

Hi,

Nice story so far.  Justin is just a kid and really needs help.  Twice in

this chapter it was mentioned that he needs to speak to someone.

Debbie offered and Jennifer suggested therapy.  Whatever – he has

got to do something.  Right night he is living in a poisoned

atmosphere.

Should he take Sara’s car?  Should he move into Cal’s house?  Like

QAF, should he move in with Debbie or maybe even Brian.  I don’t

know, but he needs to take some action, and soon.  Even though I

doubt if he sees it, but there are options, all is not lost.

Anyway, time or really future chapters will tell.

Thanks for this find story.

DavidR

Author's Response:

Thank you! Justin seems to be coping well at the moment, and probably wouldn't ever take Debbie or his mother up on their offers, but there's only so long he'll be able to manage. He IS living in a poisoned atmosphere. You've got several good ideas for places for him to go... We'll just have to wait and see if Justin can stop being stubborn long enough to ask for help, yeah?

I'm thoroughly enjoying this story.  Your Brian and Justin are very much in character, yet the circumstances surrounding them are beleivable.  These situations, unfortunately, happen all too often.  Justin is in a big jam.

I have a bad feeling Craig is going to throw Justin out, and I've no faith in Jennifer at this point.  Though I have to be honest and say if Justin was old enough (and irresponsible enough) to make the baby, then he better be prepared to care for it, or put it up for adoption.   He's obviously too young to properly care for a baby (no less raise a child) and his parents or Brian, shouldn't be expected to take on that responsiblity.  Help, yes, but Justin will have to get a full time job...forget college, and find a way to raise "HIS" kid.  Or, like I said before, give the child up for adoption.  If he doesn't, then that leaves a situation where he sacrafices his life or others come in and take over responsibilities that SHOULD be his.  Like finances, etc.  Raising a child is a full time job.   Working parents hire nanny's, or the mother stays home.  Justin can't afford either.

Ok, enough...lol.  This is just a situation I've recently been exposed to and know all the ramifications of teen pregnancies/motherhood first hand.

Great story.

Author's Response:

Justin is in a jam. As for what the future holds... Yes, you point out a lot of the practical aspects of teen parenthood that most of these stories don't take into account, and I can tell you with certainty that all of your points will be addressed. Several people in this story will tell Justin to give Luke up for adoption, and even though Justin flat-out refuses, it's not the Penultimate Evil Suggestion--it actually is the best option for the child. I'm a huge believer in adoption for teen parents. Unfortunately, this story doesn't really reflect that. *shrug*

One of the major arcs of this story is Justin learning how to be a father, so I think you'll like that evolution. He's not... exactly... doing his best job at fatherhood right now, but he learns.

Anyway. I'm really glad that you appreciate the realism of the story, and the seriousness of the situation. I hope to see you again next week!

I am really enjoying this story, and am anxious to see what happens when the gang finds out about Luke. Justin has to know that it's not good for the baby to keep him cooped up in one room - and that will hopefully be what brings them out.

I am so glad that he got some time with Brian, especially after the school scene. I can't for the life of me understand why a thoroughly horny guy would give a hand job to the man of his dreams, knowing there was no chance for payback. That could only leave him hornier than ever.

Hope he gets away from the parents soon - neither of them has been loving, supportive or compassionate. I would expect that from craig, but Jen's detached coolness is  a surprise.

Can't wait to see what next week's installment brings

loving life,

Charle

Author's Response:

Justin does know it's not good for Luke to be cooped up all the time. If I could group the first couple of chapters of this story and give them a name, it would definitely be "Something's Gotta Give", because it's evident from chapter one that this is not a stable situation. What happens when something "gives", though, remains to be seen. As for Jennifer--I promise we'll get a bit of rationalizing from Justin later on about why she's so detached.

Also, I think that Justin gave Brian that handjob because (a) he knew that it would keep Brian interested in him and (b) he wanted to express some kind of relief/happiness that Brian had come looking for him, but knew that Brian wouldn't like to hear it in words. Not that Justin consciously thought all that, mind you, but... Those would be his motives.

Next week's installment brings... a tightening of the noose. You'll see. *g*

Thanks for reviewing! It was a lovely, thoughtful review--my favorite kind!

another great chapter, i really liked the justin/brian interaction and all, cant wait for the next chapter!

Author's Response:

Thanks! I think early B/J interactions are kind of awesome, although Brian can drive me a little crazy sometimes. We'll be seeing a lot more as the story progresses!

justin would have so many willing hands to help with luke if he would just open his mouth. still think he should move into cal's and use sara's car. it would be so much better for him. the state could help him out too.

Author's Response:

Well... Maybe. I think he's right to be reluctant to tell people--there's a lot of stigma that comes with teenage parenthood, and it's not like he knows the Liberty gang very well at this point. You're a right clever thing about Cal's house and the car, though. Those may come in handy sooner or later.  Shan't say for certain, though.

Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to review, again. I can't wait to see you next week!

Poor Justin, what a shi**y time in his life.  He's got a tough, tough road ahead of him, especially with his dad causing conflict.  I look forward to this developing and how Brian will fit into the mix.

Very enjoyable!

Author's Response:

Yeah, things aren't looking very bright for Justin at the moment. I can promise you that things aren't going to get any happier in the coming chapters, either. But he's a strong kid, and I think he'll make it through.

We'll see Brian in the next chapter, and how he's going to fit into this situation, I promise. See you next week!

Interesting start I hope we will get some back story of Brian and Justin and Justin and Sara and Cal. Is Justin close to Debbie and the gang?? Looking forward to the next chapter :)

Author's Response:

Thank you! Although, er, I don't know what backstory you're looking for. This is a season one AU that essentially split off at 104, so... Justin is as close to Debbie and the gang as he was in 104--which is to say, not very--and he and Brian have only slept together twice (three times, once you count the first chapter).

I hope you continue to read, though. I promise we'll be seeing more of Brian, Debbie and the gang in coming chapters.

Very promising first chapter. Times are rough for Justin and Brian is being a sh..

Author's Response:

Thanks! Although I don't think Brian is being a $hit, really, he's just being... S1 Brian.

nice chapter, showing the difficulties justin will have to face as a parent, and some funny stuff too.  also, thanks for the explanation about just how the baby came to be, was wondering about that one.  cant wait for the next chapter! and great job on this one.

Author's Response:

Thanks! I did try to make this a little more realistic than most teenage!father!Justin stories try to do. There will be more bits and pieces of backstory coming in throughout the story, but you've gotten the most of it in this chapter.

I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying it, still. I promise that in the next chapter, we'll see Brian again!

i'm sorry that YOU misunderstood that i thought the last chapter was great, not sara dying.

once justin and luke gets into a rythm and ignore craig, things should be a little easier. it would be nice if he heard from cal as turning sara's car over to him and maybe sending money for her burial. even allowing him to live in cal's house. something.

Author's Response:

Lol. I didn't seriously think that was what you meant, don't worry. Only joking, I was.

Mm... I can't promise that things get easier from here on out--if anything, they get more strained--but we do fall into a rhythm for a while. As for Cal, well, we'll see if he turns up again. I promise I haven't just let him drop completely off the map, how's that?

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing--again--and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on next week's chapter!

really intense, absolutely love it, like all your writing.  I can't wait to read the next chapter, totally hooked!  i wonder what brian will think when he finds out about justin's problems... and i do love any stories where justin raises a kid, he would be such a great father!  anyways, i eagerly await the next chapter, thank you!

Author's Response:

Wow, thank you! I'm happy to hear you're a fan.

A lot of this story centers around Justin learning how to become a father and do what's best for his son, so I definitely think that you'll enjoy it. As for what Brian will think... Well, you'll see. New chapters posted every Wednesday--I hope to see you then!

Nicely done. Very well written, and quite a unigue perspective. I can't wait to find out more. - - - and...I never thought anything could make me think less of Craig! How can be so calloused towards his son at a time like this...but even more - how can you not have feelings for a child - any child - but especially your grandson. Yes, I think Craig has hit a new all time low.

looking forward to the next chapter

loving life,

Charle

Author's Response:

Thank you! It's definitely a unique perspective for me, because I usually despise writing in first person. With vehemence. But this story just kind of demanded it.

Craig... does not like things that don't fit in his vision of ideal household. He's been pissed about the Luke situation from the start (as we learn in this chapter), and while he doesn't hate the child, he hates what he stands for. He's also, in his own way, putting the wellbeing of Luke first, because in his mind children should of course be raised by two loving parents who are of proper age.

Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to leave a review. I'll be posting chapters every Wednesday, so keep an eye out for a new one around that time!

loved it. as sad as it was losing luke's mother i think it's great.

running into brian while their relationship is new , i can understand why he didn't tell him about sara.

craig, first grade bastard as usual. put luke up for adpotion? his own grandchild? what an idiot.

Author's Response:

Lol. You think it's great that she's dead? I'm a bit alarmed, but okay. *g*

I'm not sure how long Justin thinks he can keep all this a secret from Brian--but then again, in this chapter, he isn't really thinking in the long-term until the very end. We'll see how he deals with Brian in later chapters. And as for Craig... Yeah, kind of a dick. The situation with Luke put a lot of strain on the household, and this definitely isn't going to improve things...

Thanks for reading and reviewing. See you next week!
