This was a wonderful read.  I read your Spring contest entry and had to come over here and read the original Kai story.  My eyes are burning because i read it straight through.

Truly, a touching and sweet fic.  Loved it!

All the best,

"Christina left the day he was diagnosed."

That was painful to read. I just can’t imagine a mother doing that.

“I couldn't stand him."

"Kai is your son, Craig! You can't just dismiss him because he has autism."

What vile man. It’s a shame that there are men out there just like him. He was willing to let Kai just vegetate. I was near tears at this point in the story.

Author's Response: Sadly, this happens more often that one might think. It's really sad, but often when a child receives a diagnosis, if the parents aren't on the same page...if they both aren't on board with what happens next...and often, before the diagnosis is even given, when one parent is putting all the blame on the other....I've seen many marriages broken because of it. It's really sad. That's not to say that I haven't seen marriages become stronger...because I have! But other times, you have people like Craig who put the child raising on Christina and blamed her for everything...and then Christina leaving them both...and Craig left to care for a child he doesn't care about.

Author's Response: LOL Ted is Ted...lol

"Brian frowns, feeling like he's in the middle of an afterschool special."

LOL!!! Ted wasn't much help.

"Ooo Ooo."

Brings back memories. I remember when my child cried because he wanted his stuffed rabbit. At the time, only my mother could understand him. I understand Justin's frustration and his elation over discovering just what Kai wanted.

"Oh, did you get a testicle ripped out of you too?"

HA! Loved the confrontation.

"...but it's an entirely different offense to ignore a two-year old."

Justin was never one for injustice, but I also felt Justin saw himself in Kai.

Author's Response: LOL That was a fun confrontation to write :) And yes, Justin definitely sees some of himself in Kai, and how Craig's relationship is towards both of them.

"Ready to take a stand. A stand for his friend."

You go Ted! I love this Ted. He became a true friend.

"It didn't feel like a home."

It was so sad that Justin came to look at his father in a different light and it did not make Craig look pretty.

This is an amazing story!

Author's Response: Thank you!! I'm so glad you're enjoying this story :)

Debbie only did what she though was right.

Ted's a good friend.

Why was the name 'Kai" used?

Author's Response: The characteristics of Kai is based on several of my former students...but I didn't want the toddler to share any of their names....I've never worked with a "Kai," and I've always loved the name....so "Kai" was born :)

Reviewer: no sleep (Signed) · Date: March 16, 2013 09:47 AM · On: Chapter 12: The sum of us

It’s so funny how it takes a while to really notice something is wrong. Each child is so different. It’s also easy to go into denial.

There was no way Debbie could handle Brian’s cancer on her own.

Author's Response: Absolutely! Denial is a beautiful thing. In fact, I've worked with some children whose parents are occupational therapists or pediatricians...and still, they didn't see the red flags in their own children. Knowing how every child is different, and some are just late bloomers, makes it a real struggle for parents to sift through and see what's typical and what's not.

"You should tell Craig about Baby Signs."

That actually does work and kids who can't communicate do cry and scream.

Author's Response: Yes! I used signs with both my kids while they were infants, and by the time they were toddlers they were signing and talking. It definitely helped decrease the tantrums. I use signs with all of my students as well. Often it helps as a visual cue, and the kids learn how to communicate using their hands instead of their voice..and eventually some learn verbal words and others do not...but they can still communicate their needs :)

I read this some time ago before I started leaving reviews and I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. I love when Justin is written as a strong character that he can handle whatever life throws at him and I was so happy Brian chose to be a part of that. Choosing something like autism and its challenges which you see on a daily basis has added so much to this story. This is so well written and the blue ribbon is well deserved.

Cheers

I rarely comment on fics but I have to say thank you. As a mother of an autisic child, who is very high functioning, this has been a very realistic look into a world that is still very quiet. There have been other fics written in other fandoms but none of them have come close to shining this kind of light on the subject. My son was 2 when he was diagnosed and I thank God that we live in New York City where the services are free. He had 4 hours of ABA everyday, which I believe every child and parent should experience, along with speech, OT, PT and special instruction. During his first evaluation he was just like Kai, non-verbal. However, thanks to the services, he quickly learned how to communicate and is very much a talker now. One of the things that I had to change my friends and family view on my son was he HAS Autism, he is NOT autisic. He is not handicapped, only that he has a diffferent view of the world. I feel blessed that he was given to me to love and am thankful everyday that I can call him my son. Autism does not define my son, only adds to his uniqiness.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart that you shared this with the world, and only hope that the readers have hopefully been changed after reading this.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much, Kelly, for your kind words. This story meant a lot to me, and I am so glad that you not only enjoyed this story, but took the time to comment. I am happy to hear how well your son responded to early intervention. You're right, New York is one of the better states to live in if your child has special needs. Where I live, early intervention services is considered really good (definitely not as great as NY, but I think it's pretty close), but it's only in the county that I live in. Other counties barely offer support and most families end up getting a second mortgage on their house or giving up and thinking "this is it." A few lucky ones (i.e the ones with money) move to my county in order to obtain the free services we offer.

"he HAS Autism, he is NOT autisic. He is not handicapped, only that he has a diffferent view of the world. I feel blessed that he was given to me to love and am thankful everyday that I can call him my son. Autism does not define my son, only adds to his uniqiness. "

THANK YOU for those above lines. That is EXACTLY what I wanted this story to share.

Best wishes to you, your son, and your family.

Sincerely,

Snow

Hi,

Thanks for the story.  I loved reading it.  It is not easy to explain why,

but one reason is that as a reader, you wrote it in such a way that I had a sort of rooting interest in the characters.  I cared.

The first victory was to get Kai away from Craig.  That was huge.

Then to accept Kai as part of the Justin/Brian/Gus Family.  It wasn’t

easy, but they did it.

Finally – to then get Kai the professional help and support he needed.

Good for Justin to have done that, and good for Brian who was willing

to pay for whatever it was that was needed.  Sure enough, Kai

responded, another huge victory.  OK, maybe he didn’t respond as

fast as Justin hoped, but still it was a huge win – he improved leaving

us with impression that this improvement will continue and continue

and continue.

Again, thanks for the story.  I also hope you will find the time in the

future to give us a peek or two or three as to how they are doing.

DavidR

I had a chance to read the original final chapter.

It wasn't fate you lost the writing you perhaps composed online and then previewed it. The submit button from Preview doesn't save the work.

In the How to Add a New Story link on the home page we advise writers not to submit from a preview page but to use the left green arrow in your URL toolbar to go back to the work in the tinyMCE editor and submit it there. Or better yet; add the new chapter to your story to insure it's saved and edit it online on the fly.

It's a glitch in the tinyMCE editor that Preview won't submit or save the work. Best to submit a chapter and do corrections once it is posted and online to be certain the work is saved.

I'm sure many readers will be very happy you revised your final chapter. This story has a lot of fans and many were upset how you ended it. Readers get emotionally attached to characters especially in a story like this one.

Also you put us in a spot since Blue Ribbon/Featured Status is mainly awarded for a completed story or one that will be completed including well written, etc.

For future reference, never trust Preview to save your work. Always submit the work to the story and revise it online.

I took the liberty of announcing in your story panel the newest chapter is revised.

-Tech Support

Author's Response:

Thanks for letting me know. I hadn't realized there was that glitch. For now on I'll click Add Story and edit from there. I'm glad I had the opportunity to change the chapter. I wasn't happy with how I ended it either, and I think this has a much better closure to it.

I'm considering adding a chapter or two in the future, maybe every 6 months or so, to share a glimpse into their lives. Not sure yet!

Thanks again,

Snow

I really enjoyed this story It gave me a small insight into the difficulties of parenting of children with special needs. I loved the way Brian just went with calmness when Justin was stressed. This is the way most parents handle child rearing when it is too much for one the other one picks up the slack.

I am saddened at the abrupt end but I understand why and your explaination.  I thought it made sense "that's life" statement after all Kai is not going to suddenly change his milestone goals. I also liked the commentary that money talks and folk who can pay are privialaged with access to private services and those children may reach goals quicker.

Author's Response:

Thank you. It's sad but true on many levels: money does talk. It's amazing how much can get done and how quickly you can get things done when you are able to pay out of your own pocket.

I'm glad that this story gave you the insight and perspective that I was trying to show. I wish I would have been able to continue, and I'm sad that I had to end it the way it is... but, yes, that's life.

I don't even want to think about how many wonderful stories(both QAF and Harry Potter) I've started that were abandoned with no ending what so ever.  Better to take the time to tell us where it was going to go than to just abandon it.(vbg)

i hate  to tell you this, but it was a really shabby way to end this story. after all the time and effort you put into this and all the time we the readers invested in reading it we deserved something better than you just telling us what happened.

i understand why you did it because of the chapter you lost, but if you took the time to just tell us, then you could have given us some dialogue. be angry and or upset because of computer problems, but please don't take it out on us readers who follow you stories.

Author's Response:

I'm sorry. I feel lousy ending it the way I did, but my computer is old and it freezes often. Writing a dialogue, again, would've probably made my computer freeze, again in mid-thought. I couldn't deal with the thought of that.

A fellow fan fic writer just introduced me to Google Doc, so I am considering returning to the fic to actually COMPLETE it... but now that I wrote the basic ending... not sure if there is a point. LOL

Again, I'm sorry if you felt I was taking it out of the readers. That wasn't my attention, I just didn't want to leave it as WIP for so long. That seemed worse than writing a synopsis of the ending.

I think Brian is right....Justin is expecting too much of Kai...he is getting frustrated because of Kai's lack of cooperation during his evaluation...and is trying to throw too many things at him at once... hopefully they could reach an understanding as to what exactly Kai needs.... Thanks...

Author's Response:

It's hard to balance everything and they are going to have to figure out what will work and what won't. Thankfully, they have each other to help with that balance :)

although it seems like alot for him i think all would work out. i hope justin can handle it.

as for mel, again she is gus' parent who is suppose to be taking care of all his needs not brian. whatever brian does for gus she should be thankful for.

Author's Response:

Absolutely agree on all fronts!!! LOL It's all about figuring things out and nothing is ever easy. But together, they will find a way and a balance to what everyone needs.

Thanks for the comments! :)

Gus's reaction is due to his confidence in his father's and Justin's love for him. He is secure about his place in their lives so adding Kai to the equation doesn't threaten him at all. I like that Gus understands that his dad gives him his undivided attention when he takes him out to eat, unlike his moms. Short and sweet! Thanks for the update!

I'm so glad that he gave thta selfish tool (won't say what I really want ) Craig the papers to get custody of Kai...Craig is such a bastard seemed like he was more worried if Justin was going to try to get financial support than Kai, but what else is new from this selfish ass...I know that Brian and Justin will give Kai all the unconditional love and support that he needs...Can't wait for the next chapter...since I'm finally caught up.

I understand about the financial support but I think Kai's mother has to sign this documents too. Otherwise the custody will not be legal.

This is a great story and I love it very much.

Author's Response:

She abandoned him and has not supported him financially since she left 3 months prior. Plus, she is in another country. It's the judge's call and given the circumstance, is more than likley not going to pursue it. Every state has a different ruling on how to consider abandoment a form of child neglect. But you're right, it should be brought up in the hearing. Thanks for putting that thought in my mind. I'll have to consider that!

That sums it up!! Thanks for your comments :) Craig is the definition of an asshole, right? lol

Reviewer: Gina Marie (Signed) · Date: September 30, 2010 08:51 AM · On: Chapter 64: whistle

glad to see the boys are taking this seriously. Justin should not let Craig off the hook that easily.  Craig is responsible for Kai financially. It's irresponsible for Justin not to seek support.  He has no 'real' job, no means to support Kai, other than Brian.  It's selfish of him not to ask Craig for financial support and expect Brian to pay for all of Kai's needs, which will be many.

I hope Brian has a sit down with his son to talk about Kai, and why he's moving in with them.  Gus is a smart boy, and knows his daddy loves him, he just needs his daddy to talk to him and explain things.

Great update. Still loving this story.

Author's Response:

The problem is, if Justin seeks full custody, then legally Craig doesn't have to give Justin or Kai any money. Unless Justin seeks for child support, which then could cost him his full custody... giving Craig the option to seek joint custody.  Every state has different rules, and family court unfortunately often looks at who can pay for the child, not who actually cares about the child.

good for justin for keeping his cool and not letting craig throw him. even if he gets custody, craig should still be help responsible for kai's care. just like child support.

LOL  Brian and Justin are finally on the same relationship page but Justin is kinda in shock that it's real.  Can't wait for B & J to set the family straight on staying out of their business and relationship.  Everyone in the family has their own agenda when it comes to them.  They've lost their scapegoat in Brian and may now have to take responsibility for their own actions and problems they have in their lives.  Love that Justin wanted to draw Brian in the middle of the drama because he finds him beautiful in the simplest of poses.  Hope the showdown comes soon.

brian wooing justin? how sweet.

Sweetness coming soon LOL!

Reviewer: Anno53 (Anonymous) · Date: July 10, 2010 07:53 AM · On: Chapter 54: Sonic

I'm glad that Brian is being supportive so far. I think Justin is beginning to have an idea of what it takes to be a guardian of an autistic child. I think Justin expects an immediate response to his signing and having Kai choose. But it will take a lot of work and a lot of repetition before he begins to see any promise.

I saw a special on the news the other day that they are having marvelous results when teaching autistic children how to surf. :)

Author's Response:

I didn't see the special with surfing. What channel was it on? I would love to watch that. I think there is so much more information out there now than there used to be, and children today (not just those with autism, but children with any form of disorders or delays) have more opportunities for intervention and growth through a multitude of resources and strategies.  It's never an immediate change, but progress is progress in any form. Families should never give up hope.
