Chapter 1----------------- “So…this is it?” Dean asked as he leaned back in the car seat, looking out of the window quite suspiciously, “I don’t know Sam. It doesn’t look like the places we usually go. You sure about it?” His brother nodded slowly while running through his notes once again, then looked up, taking a good look around, “According to the coordinates Dad left us we’re at the right place.” He said, though he didn’t seem too convinced either. “And what’s this place again? ” Dean frowned. Sam answered patiently, “We’re in Pittsburgh, Dean.” “That much I know smartass, thank you very much. But where are we exactly?” “It’s called Liberty Avenue and…” Sam started but the words stuck in his throat as the sight of two kissing men across the street caught his eye. After a few seconds of staring he suddenly turned away, clearing his throat nervously, “…and…um…it’s quite a special place you know.” “No shit, man.” Dean said as three flashy drag queens passed by. He watched the rainbow flags all around the place for a moment, then turned to his brother again, “Let me take a look at those coordinates again. Maybe you’ve just missed something...” Sam sighed, getting a little impatient, tossing his notes and the map onto the dashboard, “No, I haven’t. There must be something in this area. Something Dad thought we should find.” Sam looked at his brother with conviction, but seeing Dean’s hesitation he went on, “It’s obviously a place for gay people, so what? Paranormal energies can show up anywhere…and we’re going to find it.” “Dude,” Dean huffed and shook his head in disbelief, “I suspect there’s a lot of things we could find here…but none of them seems to be our kind of thing.” “Dad sent us here for a reason Dean.” Sam said stubbornly, waiting for his brother’s reply. Dean sighed and asked reluctantly, “Fine. What do we know so far?” “Um…” Sam seemed to lose a bit of confidence now, turning away and looking out of the window again, “…not too much.” “You mean…” Dean looked at him expectantly and snorted, “…nothing. Great.” Sam tried to defend himself a bit, “Look, I went through a couple of local papers, searched on the internet, but I didn’t find anything that might give us a clue.” Dean nodded to himself and asked, “So what the hell are we still doing here?” “I say let’s talk to some locals and see if they heard of anything unusual.” Sam suggested. Seeing Dean’s unwilling expression he asked, “What’s wrong?” “Um…nothing. Everything’s cool.” Dean answered quickly though he didn’t sound convincing. He looked at Sam and saw a wide grin crossing his brother’s face so he asked angrily, “What?” “If I didn’t know you better, I’d think you’re scared.” Sam said, his grin getting even wider, “Relax, they’re just humans.” “What the fuck would I be scared of?” Dean shoved his brother in the arm then got out of the car with one quick move. Seeing Sam still grinning as he got out of the car too, Dean tried to change the subject, “We better get something to eat first. I’m starving.” “Okay.” Sam nodded in agreement since they hadn’t really eaten that day, though it was already late in the evening. As the two started to walk the street, they couldn’t miss the glances they were given; different men were checking them out constantly, smiling at them in an unmistakable way. Sam swore he even heard some catcalls too, but he didn’t turn around, just tried not to take notice of it. They’d never been to a place like this before and they really didn’t know how they should act around here. But both of them knew that if they wanted to get some information they had to play by the rules of this place. When they spotted the neon sign for a place called ‘Liberty Diner’ Dean sighed, “At last.” And with that he pushed the door and the two men stepped inside. Looking around in the relatively crowded place, they could feel the intense gazes people were giving them. “Oookay.” Dean forced a fake, nervous smile on his face and stepped to the counter. Running through the diner’s menu, the brothers looked up suddenly when they heard a loud, cheerful female voice coming from the other side of the counter. “What can I get you boys?” A middle aged woman with a huge red wig and a bright smile came their way, chewing on a piece of gum happily. Dean could see her nametag which informed him that her name was Debbie, and he could also see that one of her many badges said she was a ‘PFLAG Mom’ as well. Dean raised an eyebrow and took a mental note to find out a bit later what that meant. As the woman took their orders the brothers noticed that she was watching them with amusement. Before they could ask anything she spoke, “You two are new here, aren’t you? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.” And after examining the men’s faces for a while she added with a wink, “I’d definitely remember such cuties, believe me.” Dean frowned, because he really wasn’t used to being called something like that; Sam on the other hand smiled shyly; he couldn’t tell why but he liked this woman and the way she was acting. “There’s an empty booth over there, you can take that if you want.” Debbie pointed at a booth which had just become free. Looking at the woman’s hand Sam wondered how many bracelets she was wearing, then he answered politely, “No thanks, we’re okay.” He thought that if they sat at the counter it would be easier to get into conversations with different people, so maybe they’d get to hear something interesting, something that would tell them what it was that they should be looking for. Dean was definitely thinking the same because he nodded and both of them sat down on a stool at the counter. “So this way the boys can check your asses out.” Debbie smiled and nodded appreciatively, “Very clever.” “What?!” Sam jumped on his seat in shock. He turned around and realized that they actually were checked out. He turned back immediately, looking pretty embarrassed, “No…um…” “It’s okay sweetie.” Debbie smiled as she was leaning against the counter, “You’re new here, so you have to find some friends; it goes without saying. Newcomers are always welcomed here. I’m sure you’re going to be very popular; you’ll fit in perfectly.” As she said it a tall, muscular man with black hair stepped up to Sam, gave him a suggestive look and a smile while handing a piece of paper to him. At first Sam didn’t understand what the guy wanted from him so he gave a weak smile in return. The man winked at him and left. As Sam looked down at the paper in his hand he could see a phone number written on it. When he realized that Dean was laughing at him, though he tried to hide it by placing a hand on his mouth, he kicked his brother’s leg angrily. “See? Told you.” Said Debbie cheerfully and pointed at the paper in Sam’s hand, “It didn’t take long, did it? Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. A pretty face and a great ass can get you anywhere. Isn’t that right Sunshine?” She said and smiled at a young waiter who had stepped up beside Dean. The boy placed an empty tray onto the counter, wiping his hand on his white apron. “Huh?” He looked at Debbie uncomprehendingly, which wasn’t a surprise since he didn’t know what they were talking about. “Sunshine?” Dean repeated with a smile. The boy shrugged and answered in a friendly voice, “It’s just a nickname she gave me. Never mind that; my name is Justin.” As Dean took a good look at the boy, he could understand why Debbie had given him a name like that. With his golden hair, crystal blue eyes and bright smile he really looked like he could light up the whole place. And though Dean wouldn’t have admitted it, he found him attractive. Or, as he thought to himself he would have found him attractive, that is if he’d been attracted to men in the first place of course. Realizing that he’d spent a little more time looking at the boy than would have been necessary, he cleared his throat, giving the blond one of those irresistible smiles of his and said, “I’m Dean. And this is Sam.” “You must be new here.” Justin smiled while watching the two men whom he found pretty hot. “Yeah, well…we’re just…” Dean started. “Passing through?” The blond inquired. “No, we…” Sam cut in, “…we’ve got some work to do here first.” “Really?” Justin was curious to know what work would bring two guys like them here, so he asked, “What kind of work? Or is that a secret?” “No…of course not…” Dean said while thinking about what they should come up with this time. “We’re film-makers. And we’re making a documentary about…” he cleared his throat and tried to look as casual as possible, “…about the cultural customs of gay communities.” “You mean you want to make a porn movie?” Debbie called out loudly with a laugh, and her comment seemed to arouse other people’s interest in the diner. Sam felt himself blushing and replied quietly, “No…nothing like that.” “Too bad.” Debbie winked and disappeared to the back of the place. “Look.” Sam turned to Justin again, “Is there a place where we could actually talk to locals?” “Well, it’s not really talking that people come to Liberty Avenue for.” Justin said with a suggestive smile. “I see…but…” Sam didn’t seem to give up, “…we need to get some material for our documentary. We really should talk to some people.” “What about?” Justin’s curiosity was increasing. “Anything. I mean anything that happens around here. Anything you might find interesting…strange…or unusual.” Sam was looking at the blond meaningfully. “Well, I’m not sure what you mean but…there’s a bar called Woody’s just a few blocks away. You can find a lot of people there, especially this time of the day.” Justin looked at his watch and added, “My shift is over at 10, and then I’m going to meet my friends at that bar. You can find me there, and you can talk to my friends too.” He looked around and said, “Sorry guys, but I have to go now. See you later then.” “Yeah, see you around.” Dean answered and turned to his brother, “I think we should check out that place. At least we can have a couple of beers there.” After finishing their meal and paying for it, Sam and Dean stood up, ready to leave the diner. Sam waved at Debbie who waved back at him with a smile. Just when the younger man was about to open the door, Dean looked at him expectantly, “Aren’t you forgetting something?” Sam frowned, not understanding what his brother was talking about. “What?” Dean motioned towards the counter with his head; the piece of paper with the phone number on it was still lying there. At first Sam thought about a harsh comeback, but then he changed his mind. He stepped to the counter, and slipped the paper into his pocket. “I think I should keep it. You never know; it might come in handy.” He said to Dean as he stepped to the door again.. “Sure Sammy,” Dean answered with a teasing smile, “looks like you’re going to get laid after all. It’s about time.” “Fuck you.” Sam pushed his grinning brother out of the diner, then added sternly, “And it’s Sam.”
