My pillow moves and I let a groan escape my lips as I roll over, burying my face in it. The sun is causing my eyes to stay shut as I bury myself deeper into the cocoon that is my duvet. There’s a moan from Michael as my knee connects with his groin. “O’ry Mi…” I’m never very understandable at this time of the morning. I glance down at my left wrist and wonder why the hell I’m awake at six am. Squinting, I look to see if anyone else is awake. Emmett’s snoring softly, his sleep mask covering his eyes; Ted’s hands are clasped over his book as he sleeps. Ben’s hanging over the edge of his bunk, hair tousled, Drew’s in the same position. That’s when I realise I’m being watched by Smokey Joe on the bed across from us. “Whatta wan’ Kinney?” I mumble, using my fists to rub my tired blue eyes as I stretch; the covers slipping down so a cold breeze hits my bare stomach. So naturally I squeal and disappear under them, snuggling closer to Mikey. He’s like a walking radiator. From under the covers I can hear the laughter from Brian, it’s a little muffled but I don’t care. Then the door flies open; crashing off the wall and causing everyone to jump up or fall out the bed. Myself and Mikey end up on the floor in a tangle of limbs. “MA!” Debbie looks about at us all. “UP! NOW!” I look down at my crotch and grimace. “Sorry ma, I don’t think I can…” Snickers come from my friends as I’m slapped upside the head. “Casual today, boys. Mess hall in an hour!” she orders before striding away towards another cabin to attack the poor unsuspecting boys. Ben stumbles into the bathroom first, sounds of the shower starting rang in my ears a second later as I attempted (feebly) to pick myself off the floor and crawl back into the bed, stealing the covers from Mikey. I’m always the last one in because I take the longest. Eventually, I’m in the shower. Having lathered myself with coconut and almond shower gel and kiwi shampoo, I return to the bedroom wearing only a pair of faded blue jeans which hang off my hips. Adorning the jeans are various gay pride patches, none of which, smartly, have the word ‘gay’ on them. Their rainbow colored and have ‘proud’ written on them in old Irish Gaelic. They were a present from my cousin from his vacation in Dublin. I shuffle about the room, my damp dirty blonde hair hanging over my eyes as I tug on a black t-shirt and toe on my tennis shoes. Sliding on my thumb ring, I motion to Mikey and Em before leading the way out the cabin. Ted had walked with Blake and Drew leaving Brian and Ben with us; only as usual, Brian had vanished. No doubt to get his dick sucked. The mess hall is about as exciting as a morgue. It’s always like this on the first morning. No-one’s used to getting up at this time during the Summer vacation. A couple of boys are sleeping at the tables, breakfast forgotten. I don’t blame them, I think I might be getting some shut eye during this meal. Sliding into a chair between Michael and Emmett, I let a yawn pass my lips before I absent-mindedly find myself flicking my tongue over my lip ring as I eye up the food. This time I catch Brian watching me. The food looks good, then again, Ma’s cooking usually does. Only this morning I’m too damned tired to eat. So instead, I let my head flop onto Emmett’s shoulder, eyes closing as my friend’s arm slides round my shoulder to keep me upright as Debbie starts her early morning lectures. “Blah blah blah blah, blah blah blah.” Yes, that’s how it sounded to me. I usually pay attention but sharing a bed with Mikey is liable to keep you up all night. He snores, steals the covers and continuously kicks you. Why do I let him in? Two words catch my attention however, my eyes snapping open and cause sharp intakes from my friends as they all look at me. “Going…Swimming!?” My squeak is heard by everyone as they all go silent. It’s common knowledge I have a fear of water, but only the ones with worried looks on their faces know the reason why. Debbie covers her mouth as she looks at me. “Sunshine, I’m sorry!” I shrug and it’s Brian who speaks up. “I’ll sit with him, I don’t really wanna swim anyway.” Debbie looks thankful as she nods before being told that Emmett and Mikey will sit out too. The water is clear, but to me, it’s dark and murky. It houses dangers you couldn’t understand. We’re lounging lazily under a tree, shirts piled up in the shade to keep them cool. “So why don’t we tell each other something about ourselves other than our names?” Ben asks, looking mainly at me. He must have gathered I don’t like talking about myself so I shrug. “Whatever,” is all I say before looking at my hands. I open my mouth to speak when a ball hits me on the side of the head. I already know who it is. Who else would it be? “Fuck off Hobbs!” I snarl, glaring up at the older boy who’d appeared to reclaim his ‘straying’ ball. The blond laughs harshly at me, a sound I don’t like. “Aww ickle Taylor’s scared of the water.” His followers snicker before turning on me. “You know, getting over Adam would be an easier thing. Fucking hell, it’s been 4 years and you’re still shit scared of water. Or is it the fact you can’t swim?” I glower at him before looking away. What I really want to do is lug him one in the jaw. He saunters off and Ben looks at me curiously. “Who’s Adam?” I know they all want to know. Mikey puts his hand on my shoulder and Emmett chews his lip as I sigh. “Adam is…was… my twin brother…”
