Melanie was driving the car. Lindsay was next to her talking a mile per minute excitedly. “What do you think it is?” Lindsay asked. “I don’t know. A girl.” Melanie told her. Lindsay laughed. “You always want everyone’s babies to be girls.” Lindsay said. Melanie laughed. “It would be a better world.” Lindsay shook her head. “Without guys, we couldn’t have any babies at all.” Lindsay pointed out. “We could put their sperm in a bank and get rid of them.” Lindsay laughed and after a while got serious. “I think we should talk with Brian again.” Lindsay said. “Ask him nicely to be the donor.” Melanie looked at Lindsay before she looked back at the road. She didn’t want Brian to be the father of their future kid. “He already said no, once.” “Maybe I should talk to him alone.” Lindsay said. Melanie thought for a while. “Is that who you really want?” Lindsay nodded. “He is gorgeous. Our baby would be the most beautiful child in the world.” Lindsay told her. “Okay.” Melanie agreed. Melanie would do anything to keep Lindsay happy. Even if she had to deal with the fact that Brian would be the donor for their child. *** Emmett clapped his hand. “Go faster, Teddy.” “We are not going to have an accident.” Ted said. Emmett rolled his eyes. “We’ll be okay.” “What if the cops stop us?” Ted asked. “Okay, okay.” “Could you relax?” Ted asked. “You are scaring me.” “I just can’t wait to see what Justin is having.” Emmett said. “Every time I asked him, he would laugh and shake his head, telling me it was a surprise.” “I hope it’s a boy. Boys are better.” Ted said. “Oh, and we just got these beautiful baby clothes.” Emmett shrieked. “Just don’t go crazy buying stuff.” Ted told him. Emmett nodded even though he had every intention of buying the store. He and Justin had become good friends and now he was going to be an Auntie. He couldn’t wait. “Ted, go faster.” Debbie said after a while of just thinking in the back of the seat . Debbie wanted to be there for Justin. She would help him with the baby and make sure Justin could still finish school. She would do her best to make up for what Justin’s parents did. “We are going to get there in one piece.” Ted told her. Vic smiled. “Why are you smiling like that?” Debbie asked him. Vic shrugged. “What are you not telling me?” Debbie asked. “You’ll see.” Vic told her. Debbie kept eyeing her brother while Emmett kept talking about baby clothes and toys and everything he could think of. *** Brian and Michael jumped out of the jeep and ran inside the hospital. They asked the nurse where Justin Taylor was and she directed them to a waiting room where they found Jack pacing back and forth. “Dad, what happened?” “Brian.” Jack said. “He was in so much pain. I called an ambulance. They brought him here and set him in a room. I was with him trying to make him relax until they told me to get out.” “What are you not telling me?” Brian asked. Jack blinked a couple of times before he let out a sigh. He put his hand on Brian’s shoulder and gave his son a very sad look. Brian was losing his patience. “He…he stopped breathing.” Jack said. “But I got the doctors really quickly. I’m sure he is okay.” Brian opened his eyes wide and took a step back. “The doctor and the nurses rushed in and pushed me out. They have been there ever since.” Jack said. “Fuck.” Brian hissed. Michael was biting his lower lip and standing still as Brian leaned against the wall with his arm over his forehead muttering something. Jack resumed his pacing. They waited for a while until the doctor came in and walked towards Brian. “Hello, Mr. Kinney.” Doctor Johnson said. “How is Justin?” Brian asked. “My dad said he had stopped breathing. Tell me he’s fucking okay.” Brian grunted. “He had an asthma attack.” Doctor Johnson said. “We have it under control.” Brian took a deep breath and nodded. “Can I go inside?” Brian asked. “No.” The doctor said, frowning for a moment. “What’s going on?” Brian asked. “The drugs we used on Justin did not work so we gave him something stronger. We don’t know what kind of reaction that’s going to have with the sedatives we are giving him. Your son has the umbilical cord around his neck and we are prepping him for surgery. As soon as everything is ready, we will have to act quickly and it would be best if you stayed here.” “God damn!” Brian hissed. Brian pushed the doctor against the wall. “I don’t care what the fuck you do, but you make damn sure that Justin is fine. You hear me?!!!” Brian screamed ardently at the doctor. “Brian.” Michael said as he pulled Brian back with Jack’s help. “Relax.” Jack said. “How can you ask me to fucking relax?” Brian screamed as he pushed Michael and Jack away from him. Brian turned around and walked away from them. *** “Michael!” Debbie said, running to her son. “How the hell did you get here so fast?” “I kind of ignored the red lights and the speed limit signs.” Michael said. “You could have killed yourself.” Debbie chastised. “I’m okay, Ma.” Michael told her. “Hey. How is Justin?” Melanie asked walking with Lindsay as they sat in the plastic chairs out in the hallway. “He had an asthma attack. They gave him some medication and they are worried that is going to have a reaction with the sedatives. He is allergic to a lot of stuff. Anyway they have to take the baby out because he got tangled in the umbilical cord. We have been waiting for a while and they haven’t told us anything after that.” “Damn.” Ted said shaking his head. “Poor kid.” “He is going to be just fine. He’s a strong little fucker.” Jack said rubbing his hand. “Come on, Michael.” “Where are we going?” Michael asked, pulling his cell phone. “Let’s go find Brian.” Jack said. Michael was trying to call Brian and he also was going to call Chris and cancel their date. “I’ll go with you guys.” Vic said. “I hope he is okay.” Debbie said sitting down. Emmett sat next to her and put his arms around her. “That kid has been through so much shit!” Debbie complained. “It’s not fair.” “I know.” Emmett told her. Melanie and Lindsay smiled uncertainly at each other. They grabbed their hand and waited with positive thoughts. They were scared for Justin’s health. *** “Hello?” Daphne asked. “Hey. It’s me, Michael.” “Hi. Is everything okay?” Daphne asked. “Justin is in the hospital having the baby.” Michael told her. “Oh, that’s great!” Daphne cheered. “I wish I could be there.” “Yeah.” “Is everything okay?” Daphne asked. “Yeah, yeah. Just calling to let you know.” Michael told her. Michael wasn’t going to worry her too. “Okay. You have to promise to call me as soon as it’s over.” Daphne told him. “Promise.” Michael said. “How is Brian?” Daphne asked. “He is not here.” Michael told her. “Of course not.” Daphne said. “I forgot that he has to be with Justin.” Michael didn’t say anything about that. “I’ll call you later and let you know what happens.” Michael told her. “Okay.” Daphne said smiling from ear to ear. Michael hung up and then called Molly’s aunt to let them know what was going on before he went to find Brian. *** Brian took out another cigarette and lit it up. He took a long drag and started pacing again even thought he didn’t know he was doing it. He ran his fingers through his hair and licked his lips as he felt his eyes watering. “Brian.” Michael said as he stood in the doorway. Michael closed the door to the roof and walked towards Brian. “What happen?” Brian asked. Michael shook his head. “They haven’t told us anything yet.” Michael said. Brian turned around and took another drag. “I’m sorry.” Michael said. Brian turned around to look at his friend and started crying. “I…I love him, Mikey. I don’t want to lose him.” Brian chocked out. Michael went and hugged his friend. Brian’s body was trembling. He held on to Michael and tried not to cry. “Shhh.” Michael said. “Justin is going to be okay. I know he will.” Brian nodded believing each word Michael was telling him. “He will be back to talk about the strangest things that a person can think off.” Michael said. Brian laughed. “He will irritate the shit out of us.” Michael kept talking. “He is so good at that.” Brian said smiling as he pulled back to look at Michael. “We are always arguing.” “I know.” Michael said since he had been there for many of the arguments that Brian and Justin had. “He gets me so worked up over stupid things and then suddenly, he starts talking about something else completely new.” Brian said smirking. “When you weren’t there and we had these crazy fights he would end up asking me to fuck him.” Michael and Brian laughed. “I was jealous of him at first.” Michael said. Brian looked up with an arched brow. “He used to hang with us and I thought he would take my place as your best friend.” Michael said. “Never.” Brian said. “He has a more special position.” Michael whispered. “I’m sorry.” Brian told Michael. “You will always be my best friend, Mikey.” Michael smiled and nodded. “I’m happy that you found him. I always thought that you would never find anyone. The way you acted.” Michael said. “But Justin is good for you. He understands how your mind works.” Brian nodded. “I understand him too.” Brian said. “Oh god, Mikey. I can’t do this.” Michael hugged him tightly. “I wish I could go back in time.” Brian told him. “What the hell for?” Michael asked. "I could make everything alright." Brian whispered. Michael looked at Brian with sad eyes. "Brian." Michael whispered. “I would have been more careful.” Brian told him. “His father wouldn’t have found out that his son was gay and pregnant. He wouldn't have kicked him out. He wouldn't have made him suffer afterwards. My baby wouldn’t wake up having nightmares thinking he was still locked up in that horrible place. He wouldn’t be in there suffering.” “But you are about to be a father and you guys are happy.” Michael pointed out. “Not if I lose him, Mikey. I’m spoiled now. I know what life with him is like. I don't want to give that up.” Brian said. Michael held him tightly. “That’s not going to happen.” Michael assured him. “Michael?” “What?” Michael asked as he still was hugging Brian. “If my son made it and Justin didn’t…would you take care of him?” Brian asked. Michael pulled back to look at Brian. “Why wouldn’t you be able to do it?” Michael asked. Brian shrugged. Michael had a pretty good idea what Brian was talking about. “Don’t talk like that, you fucking shit.” Michael hissed. “Let’s go back.” Michael told him angrily. Brian took a deep breath and followed Michael. *** “Hey, Mike.” Chris said, getting up from the chair and smiling. Michael smiled and kissed Chris on the mouth. “What are you doing here?” Michael asked. “Justin is my friend too. I wanted to be here for him and you.” Chris said. Brian sat on a chair next to his father. Jack put his hand on Brian’s knee and tapped him, letting him know that everything was going to be okay. “I’m going to get us some coffee.” Ted said. “I’ll help you.” Emmett said. “Who is he?” Debbie asked. “This is Chris.” Michael said. “It’s nice to meet you, sweetie. I’m so sorry it wasn’t under better circumstances.” Debbie told him. Chris smiled and nodded. He sat down with Michael across from Brian. “What’s that?” Brian asked looking at the wooden box that his father had on his lap. Jack smiled and opened the box. Brian looked inside and raised a brow. “I bought it a week ago.” Jack said. “Before we got in the ambulance I grabbed it along with the baby’s things. I didn’t leave it in the room because I know a nurse could have taken it away.” Brian nodded and smiled a little. “He’s going to be okay.” Jack said closing the box. Brian looked at his father and nodded. He crossed his arms and waited for some news.
